This is from a show called "Begin Again Korea" Each year a group, often of changing artists travel around a country 'busking'. This was 2020 so they stayed in South Korea and sang to give the people hope. Sohyang was on 6 out of 9 shows I believe and everything is well worth listening too. Next to her is Henry Lau -the only non Korean, he is a character and so talented. Everybody loves Henry. The two girls are Lee Hi and Lee Suhyun both very popular as well. The whole group is marvelous.

As others already pointed out, this performance was part of the "Begin Again Korea" in which a group of artists (including Sohyang) agreed to do busking around South Korea during the pandemic in 2020, with the objective to bring some comfort and joy to people who were enduring the grim and threatening ambience around them. This performance took place on a pier of the POSCO steel plant in Pohang, South Korea. Those in attendance were employees and laborers working during the pandemic. Really like the way you reacted to this performance. I understand that vocal coaches tend to be very analytical and focused on techniques. Two things you said really stuck with me. The first one is when you mentioned Sohyang's restraint - "She is not playing up to it but really sincere." This is the true magic of Sohyang's singing. Whatever technical elements she uses are meant to contribute to the delivery of the emotional context. The result is, as you stated, you feel what she feels. The second observation is about how you recognized that Sohyang didn't resort to the use of fully powered belt in attacking the performance like many others to stay within the tonal choice of her stylistic choice. 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' was the first one I saw by Sohyang, and I still remember the jaw-dropping shock I felt watching her doing her own thing to this classic.

You haven't even scratched the surface with So Hyang. She brings something different with each performance. She has such a high belt that this video doesn't really portray. Check out her other Whitney Houston song called I HAVE NOTHING. or her most difficult song EVERYONE, has over 7 minutes of belting. She belts up into the G5 range. She puts so much emotion into her performances.

You might compare and contrast this with Sohyang's legendary performance of this same song 5 years or so ago. As amazingly powerful as that was, imho she has just gotten better and better, and this more recent performance shows her sincerity and tasteful restraint. She always connects appropriately with the audience, and I believe this audience consisted primarily of first-responders burdened with the crisis.

Sohyang is quite involved with the arrangements she sings, and always strives to make every song she sings her own.

You have so much to look forward to. This was Sohyang holding back as that was the whole tone of these ‘begin again Korea’ performances where a small ensemble of singers/ musicians basically go in to public spaces busking. These performances were during the pandemic whilst social distancing was a must, hence the small mask wearing audience.

Thanks for your review of the angel So-hyang! Almost everyone that hears her the first time reacts emotionally in some way. This is actually one of her lower energy songs though it is outstanding for its control and tonal quality. My favorite recent So-hyang song is "Love Poems" which was originally written and sung by "IU". It is about her friends that call out for help before suicide but no one listened! Another great Korean singer is Song So-hee "Tearful Duman River" is done in an old Korean traditional style. In the beginning she removes her shoes and leaves them by the river to symbolize she walked into the river to join her deceased lover. Both of these songs are hauntingly beautiful and their effect will leave you feeling them long after they're ended.

Bridge over the troubled water --> 3. Everyone The order is important as songs' difficulties go higher. That is what I think :) For the fellow artists in the video, there were Lee Hi, Jung Seunghwan, Lee Suhyun, Henry, and Ha Lim who are also pretty popular in Korea. Nice, it's always great watching vocal coaches react to So Hyang for the first time. :) "I Have Nothing" is my favorite performance by her. I'm not an expert and I try not to become overly attached to any particular artist, but I think she's one of the best singers of all time.

There are many great ballads by So Hyang as other people have mentions. (For me I like Bridge over troubled water that song made me cry.) The one that is so different called Monalisa which is a pop-rock song. I want to know what you think about it.

Ailee has an awesome rendition too. And as for SOHYANG, she definitely has more impressive performances, even though this is massively impressive too. You may want to start with ARIRANG alone. For me that’s my favorite performance by her and it’s a great way to see everything that she can do in one song. Then “bridge over troubled water”. And most of her fans will agree that “everyone” is her best over all technical performance.

The thing is, the other performers on the stage have exceptional voices, too. I'm a particular fan of Lee Hi and Suhyun, the two young women on Sohyang's right. Lee Hi singing "Rose" on Begin Again will knock your sox off.

To know Sohyang you have to delve into her performances in I Am Singer in 2012 because that is the time when she became famous in Korea thru that competion show among the greatest singers of Korea, then the Immortal Songs and the King of the Masked Singers....Recently Begin Again....But some of her best gems are recorded on camcorders and phones LOL....

Soyoung is one of my favorites. Speaking of Whitney songs David Phelps recently released on his channel a cover of I have nothing it is so amazing I wish you could react to it

The second you hear that first "If..." I think everyone has the same reaction-you know she is about to bless your ears and break your heart. 🥲

Sohyang went for technical control and emotion rather than insane high notes and belting in these Begin Again Korea performances. I suspect that was partly to match better with all the young performers who shared the stage with her. But it also fit the environment of the performance -- small audiences out on the busking. It works great for me. She also has some powerful live performances before large audiences where she is consciously making a personal statement. The TV show Immortal Songs 2 -- where top Korean Professionals compete with each other -- has several good ones. So does King of Masked Singers and I Am a Singer, two other TV shows where professionals compete. (Seems like Koreans treat music like Americans do professional sports. I can get into that.)
