My favorite bit of this movie is that they basically show you the whole movie in the flashback at the start. Everything in Gary's story plays out over the course of the film
You guys need to watch Spaced, short run series with Simon Pegg, it's the series that pretty much started the idea of the Cornetto trilogy, especially Shawn of the Dead. It's also made by Edgar Wright. It's a comedy series that centers on Pegg and Jessica Hynes (nee Stevenson) two strangers who move in together in a flat having to pretend that they're married, and they share these blocks of flats with other slightly weird tenants, then there's Nick Frost, who plays Pegg's best mate as always. It's quirky, funny and brilliant.
For me this is the best of the Trilogy. Comedy but really well written characters and plot. Gary King is a much deeper and rich character than Simon Pegg's other leads in Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead
Just a bit of context for non-Brits regarding the pubs all looking the same - until about the late 90's, pubs were all quite unique and set in their ways. You had regulars who stuck to their local pubs and never really went anywhere new. Each pub has its own thing going on and had been like that for decades or even centuries. They were owned by a "landlord" who was just a guy running a private business. Come the last couple of decades, things have become highly gentrified and uniform, especially as you have large companies buying up pubs and making them homogenous - franchises essentially, which was never really done before on a large scale. The old wallpaper was replaced with a specific colour of paint, the nasty old carpets were replaced with wooden floors. That's where the joke about identical pubs in the movie come in - once they become franchised, the decor, drinks etc would have been mandated to be a certain way to match the company's specs. Pubs in the early 90's when these guys did their pub crawl would have most definitely been updated in this way by the time the movie is set. More welcoming to a wider variety of clientele but with a cost to its individuality.
Keep a lookout for the final scene of the film, a Cornetto wrapper blows past in a breeze, briefly catching on a wire fence... If you have NOT seen the film - Please DON'T READ FURTHER - SPOILERS !!! Each film in the trilogy is connected to a specific Cornetto Ice Cream flavour and appear in each film. 'Shaun of the Dead' features a STRAWBERRY flavoured Cornetto, which signifies the film's bloody and gory elements. 'Hot Fuzz' includes the BLUE 'original' Cornetto, to signify the police element to the film and 'The World's End' features the GREEN MINT chocolate chip flavour (though shown only by a wrapper caught in the wind) representing "little green men" and science fiction.
I will sleep much better for knowing that now, thanks for the info! Edit: Just noticed the characters last names at the start of the video are Chamberlain, Page, Prince, Knightly and King. The last four have connections to royalty, as for Chamberlain...
@@secondchance6603 The Lord Chamberlain, perhaps? The 'LC of the Household' is the most senior officer of the Royal Household of the United Kingdom. 'They' (the LC) is appointed by agreement between the sovereign and the prime minister. They are in charge of supervising the departments which support and provide advice to the UK Sovereign, while also acting as the main communication channel between the Sovereign and the House of Lords. The 'office' organises all ceremonial activity such as garden parties, state visits, royal weddings, and the State Opening of Parliament. They'also handle the Royal Mews and Royal Travel, as well as the ceremony around the awarding of honours. The LC is also chairman of the committee that recommends for the sovereign’s consideration applications for the grant of the royal warrants of appointment for the supply of goods. One of the duties for which the LC was best known was the licensing of London theatres and the censorship of stage plays throughout the UK. This position dates back to the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, when the lord chamberlain was in charge of all court entertainments and took the players under his personal protection.
Your first "where's he from ?" is Eddie Marsan, who played the creepy headmaster from Deadpool 2. He was also Inspector Lestrade in the 2 Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes Films as well
One of the joys of this movie is seeing Eddie and Paddy Considine, who are brilliant actors who've been in some pretty heavy movies and shows, kicking loose and exercising their comedy muscles.
I forgot they managed to get TWO former James Bond actors into this "trilogy". (Timothy Dalton in Hot Fuzz, and Pierce Brosnan in this.) btw, I'm sure somebody already said this in the comments of the Hot Fuzz reaction, but the guy in the security office was played by Edward Woodward, who was the lead actor in "The Wicker Man" (1973). Hot Fuzz was *heavily* influenced by that film. Or it was more like "The Wicker Man, but as a comedy".
8:10 "Helmet" is a not-too-common slang word these days, for... well... use your imagination. lol A slightly more common term these days would be a "bell-end".
11:05 - Rafe Spall. His dad played Peter Pettigrew in the Happy Rotter movies (Azkaban, etc.). Believe it or not, he was also in Shaun Of The Dead, but looks a lot younger. He was the guy in the shop at the start, who answered his phone in the middle of a staff meeting. "You have red on you."
@@crocsmart5115 Damn it. I forgot to mention that one. lol So many people reacting to the Denzel movies recently, but Mr Woodward was the original. hehe
Gary talking about bottling up past trauma leading to inadequate coping strategies it shows that he really has taken what he learning in therapy to heart, he said what he'd learning unironicly. He really had tried to get better in the program and it didn't work for him so he had to find his own way. The Golden Mile was Gary's own 12 steps, his Hail Mary attempt to save himself.
It was his Hail Mary attempt to _kill_ himself. Get into his dress uniform, have one last wild night, go out on a high. He had no intention of leaving that town alive, he didn’t even bring any luggage, because he wouldn’t have needed any. Getting that last pint would have been the last thing he intended to do. Andy stopped him because he understood that Gary was destroying himself even if it wasn’t until he saw Gary’s bandaged wrists that he realised just what he fully intended.
I love watching people have their WTF? moment with the toilet scene! Best of the Cornetto films for me, very clever writing and lots of subtle foreshadowing (especially the pub names) it get's better with every re-watch.
Most midpoint shifts happen subtly, quietly with most audiences barely acknowledging that the stakes have changed... Worlds End's midpoint shift hit's with 16 inch guns from a battleship.
@ 6:17 - Daniel - "where is he from?" You could possibly have seen him in Ray Donovan: He is English actor Eddie Marsan & played Terry Donovan, Ray Donovan's brother that ran the boxing gym. He is a top notch character actor that you will come across in many UK and US movies.
People from the first two movies have popped up in it as secondary and background characters. The lady sitting next to Simon Pegg in the AA/NA meeting was the zombie lady in the back garden in Shaun of the Dead, and the guy looking at the expensive house was in both Shaun of the Dead (Shaun's teen workmate) and Hot Fuzz (one of the Andys). So cool!
Mary! As he says in the Winchester “ we will start with a Bloody Mary” and. Explains the whole film in one sentence. Same as this film. With Simons speech to the lady inn keeper before the bar crawl. Love Edgar’s writing and directing.
If your looking to scratch your pegg/frost/wright itch in the future, i cant recommend Spaced enough. Its the first thing that the trio ever work on and its fucking brilliant
Loved your reaction (my favourite out of all the one's I've seen) because of how well you followed and really resonated with the characters, particularly Gary. I saw the film on the big screen and Simon Pegg as Gary really was ''cool''. I was rooting for him the whole time. And what an ending! It's my favourite of the trilogy too.
There is a tradition here in Ireland around christmas called 12 pubs generally a group of people dress up in christmas jumpers or christmas themed outfits and do a drink in each pub and see who makes it to the end pub .i think the time it starts couod be 9 pm but that could depend on the group
12 pubs of Christmas and f@cked we will be:) used to do 2 pints and 2 double shots in every pub, twaz easy at the time, but an ambulance would be needed if I tried it now:)
@@alibennett78 tiz yourself that's in it, how's she cutting, not 3 bad here. you don't drink? Neither do I, anymore, thank christ:) ant scandal with ya?
@@donallmccrudden4812 ah no all is quiet thank god .ah ok I suppose some people would say u be saving money bit these days u will find other things to spend it on .hope ur well anyway
"best of the trilogy" nice to not be the only one who feels this way, shaun of the dead and hot fuzz have become such classics (not that they don't deserve to be) but it's always nice to see this movie get some appreciation :)
I love this film. I think it's just as good as Shaun and Fuzz but for some reason it only gets 6.9 on imdb. Ludicrous Display (! ref: IT crowd)... It should be at least 8. In my books it should be 10. Brilliant.
It's such a beautiful premise for this movie. Your comment; "it's sad but awsome." So right! So relatable, so coherent, so clever. Very clever insight into social groups. And then throw some bat-s#!t bonkers in. Just so great. [Applause]
You guys got to watch this movie a few times . Each time you’ll notice somthing new . All the movies are really good at bringing you back and exceeding your expectations Edit : fosters is generally believed to be a drink you have because it’s cheap or because it’s a session drink . Stella is good but not looked at as a good drink . Uk is pretty mixed with beer preference
I'm still grateful to my friend for making me watch this movie with him wihtout telling me *anything* about it or letting me look at the DVD case. So I really settled into the cozy small story pub sort of vibes and then was *entirely* gibsmacked when shit started hitting the fan. 😂 Thanks, Jasper! 😁
Its the greatest of the Trilogy, imo. I love them all, but TWE just hits different than Shaun, and Fuzz, because of Gary King. Such an amazingly realised character. Loss, fear, lack of purpose, addiction, depression, suicide, all wrapped up in a machismo bravado. We all know a Gary King. Lots of us recognise parts of him in ourselves. Wonderful film.❤
1:09 - ‘I would love to do that to my high school bully’. Feel the same way - BUT - I bumped into my bully about 15 years after leaving school, he tried to start a fight and I kicked the ever loving shit out of him. Issues resolved…. 😁 (I’d spent the last decade getting into shape - I wasn’t an easy target anymore)
Approx. 26.20ish mark: He mentions Mr Shepherd's class, and - “Exit, pursued by a bear.” Probably the most famous Shakespearean 'stage directions' of all time... (Act III of 'The Winter's Tale'). Also known as ONE of Shakespeare's "problem plays" - very much like THIS film; Thus the first three acts in the 'play' are filled with intense psychological drama (build-up, getting the 'gang' together and then visiting the 'pubs'), while the last two acts are comic and supply a happy ending (NO spoilers here!). We should applaud Shakespeare 😎
The local theatre here did "The Complete Works of Shakespear Abrided" last year... the bear was replaced with a dinosaur. (Also Hamlet got in his car and drove off halfway through the play)
I've just watched you lads both enjoy the Simon pegg trilogy, the set up for the jokes etc.... So if you liked these movies you will love "a fantastic fear of everything" with pegg. It's got once of the best set up for a joke I've ever seen in a movie. I just know you will buckle with laughter, I'd even put money on it. I can't say any more, I just so hope you watch it. Cheers lads
I love this so much & I really hope you enjoyed this trio & i have loved watching it with you so far. Now reason i say this. Is because i am from United kingdom & love this movie. Really touched my soul & i know it by heart. Still always finding new things out about it, 3 years later, But this video of a first time reaction sheds light & i have 26 mins to go still. Wish me luck everyone :) Again Thank You so much for cheering a Yorkshire lass up boys, so far a total belter. Ps Should review & Give us your great wisdom of Run Fat Boy Run! That would truly brighten up my new year & id never ask for Anything again. Personally if you loved Shaun Of The Dead, You are going to love this one :) Peace out & Stay safe.
im in my 50ies but i managed to finish one quest like that with 48 .. the hangover was brutal but fuck it was worth it its a great memory now and finually you just regret what you havent done in your older days
Really enjoyed watching this movie with you and hearing your comments. Oh, and it was Timothy Dalton in Hot Fuzz. But Pierce Brosnan in the world's end, just thought you'd like to know.😊😂❤ Of course, both actors share having played James Bond in the past.
Trivia.. What made this as a 3 flavours Cornetto trilogy was this Shaun of the dead had red Cornetto : indicate blood Hot fuzz had blue Cornetto : indicate police The world's end had green Cornetto: indicate extraterrestrial
I watched all three movies in theaters, and I live just north of Philadelphia,PA. I'm only a year older than Danny, born in the south as well. Don't know why it missed your radar, but I guess that's just how it goes
Car is a Ford Granada MkII, 2.8i... Considered a big old tank of a car here, a teenager with one in the 90s would have stood out among the hatchbacks and city cars.
Soundtrack in this is bangin! takes me back to the 90's, i left school in 91, i went to South Park High in Lincoln (Birthplace of the Tank), i got served my first lager when i was 16, those were days of no door staff.
Get yourself to Ennistymon when you visit Ireland Spence. Where a lot of father Ted was filmed. Good pub called Eugene’s with lots of Ted stuff and they recorded there
So the Trilogy has 2 James Bond’s in. Pierce in this and Tim ‘slasher of prices’ Dalton. Would have been great to have had Connery in Shaun of the dead. Maybe as John the Landlord. 😉
For anyone who's seen "Day of the Triffids" (1962 version is all I know), certain parts of this movie remind of that. (Around 1 hour and 2 minutes is what I'm talking about). Ugh, wrong movie.. lol.. not day of the triffids, but "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" :D oopsie!
Guys this is awesome film. You have to react to Paul as well! There is a great pub in Edinburgh called World’s End….this is a typical Englishman drinking session…apart from the aliens
Pre covid and lockdown nonsense, no way am I watching RU-vid generally. Somehow Embrace the Suck21 appears. Good lads, good music and humour. 3 years on fellas! Bl00dy hell.
I've watched all of them, incl PAUL. However, I was today old when I realised the Cornetto trilogy comprised of Conspiracy theories. ZOMBIES, CULTS, ALIENS. Sure PAUL..was definately about aliens But also its about the Government lying/keeping secrets/Area51. I just enjoyed them so much so that I didn't see it. But when you break it down... yeah.
Specially this one, with the way the worlds been going the last 3/4 years, governments over the world making nonsense laws for nonsense reasons, when you question it, it’s either “that is irrelevant” or “it’s for the greater good”. And people say the simpsons predicted a lot
One of my fav films of all time. Unfortunately I can relate. 12 pints isn’t anything that bad. Maybe be an English thing. Or a me thing? Lol I once asked Simon Pegg jokingly on a live chat that I would like to do the golden mile. I think he took it as an insult and said to me that the whole idea of the film is bascially addiction is bad for you and it shouldn’t be glorified as so. I was just wanted to see where they shot the scenes. Albeit not a lot of it in the actual town it was shot in. I live in Northeast England every 15/20 mins away by car you will hear a totally different accent. Words and cultures. Going to see where they filmed this is one my bucket list and I’ll go one day. It’s around 7 hours drive. Very long for the UK unlike the US Anyway. I just came across your channel today and watched you react to the the greats raid of all time. I love watching Americans watching English stuff. Always seem to laugh at different things! Interesting really. Sorry for waffling on (English term) love the channel and I will be subscribing and binging. Thanks guys!
Good reaction, you popped up in my recommended videos. I will dig back through your older reactions. Since you made it through the cornetto trilogy I think you should watch Paul. Another Simon Pegg and Nick Frost movie but with a different director.
Man, I envy you two. I had a best friend. We were like you. For 9 years we had a blast. Then he fell in love and married a girl from a VERY religious family, and I was history. LOL -- and I wasn't even the wild one. I didn't see my friend for 2 years. Then, out of the blue, he called and wanted me to come to their house. When I got there, he invited me in as far as his garage. He had a shoebox of stuff saved from his former life to give me -- paperbacks, a couple of crystal paperweights, a ring and a bolo tie with Kokopelli on it -- all things that his wife wouldn't have in their house because they were "Devil worship." I was really knocked-back by the whole thing. It really pissed me off. I tossed that box in the garbage at a Circle-K. On the way home, I wondered if their minister was over, exorcising their garage about then. Funny thing -- even though I'm "persona augratin"
The nightclub in the film, called the mermaid i think, its where they see the marmalade sandwitch, ect,,,thats actually a cinima, and me and my kids watched this film in it,good oh lol
