The World Santoor Day highlights the rich cultural heritage, historical significance and legacy of the Santoor, the Shatatantri Veena, on global stage, which is more than 5000 years old, emphasizing its deep roots in the Kashmir Shaivism culture. By bringing international attention to the Santoor's unique history, the ‘World Santoor Day’ fosters a greater appreciation and understanding of this exquisite instrument and the cultural philosophies it embodies, promoting cultural diversity and unity through music. This day not only honours Indian Santoor, but also the resembling instruments in various music cultures around the world like Santur in Iran, Santouri in Greece, Yangqin in China, Hammered Dulcimer in America, Cimbalom or Hackbrett in Europe, etc.
This occasion marks the Birth Anniversary of the Great Saint - Music Legend late Pandit Bhajan Sopori ji, who was hailed as the ‘Saint of Santoor’ and the ‘King of Strings’.
The 1st edition of the World Santoor Day saw the legends of music and creative arts fraternity coming together to announce and declare 22nd June as the World Santoor Day including Sh. AR Rahman, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Sh. Anup Jalota, Sh. Kailash Kher, Vidushi Sumitra Guha, Ustad Akram Khan, Ustad Rafiuddin Sabri, Sh. Siddharth Kak, Dr. Agni Shekhar, Utpal Kaul, Pt. Rajinder Prasanna, Pt. Chetan Joshi, Pt. Bholanath Mishra, Ustad Asghar Hussain, Ustad Saeed Zafar Khan, Pt. Ajay P Jha, Pt. Ajay Prasanna and many others.
The 1st World Santoor Day featured Padmashri Pandit Satish Vyas, Pandit Abhay Rustum Sopori, Ustad Shabir Saaznawaz (Kashmir), Maestro Siamak Aghaei - Santur (Iran) and a number of disciples of Pandit Bhajan Sopori ji and Pt. Abhay Sopori like Divyansh Srivastava (Delhi), Dr. Mi Xuanye (China), Guido Estrada (Argentina) amongst others. The 1st edition of the World Santoor Day was celebrated in various in cities across India and around the world.

About Pt. Abhay Rustum Sopori: He is a versatile Santoor Maestro & Music Composer Pandit Abhay Rustum Sopori. He has been the only Indian classical musician other than the Great Music Legend Pandit Bhajan Sopori ji to have composed and conducted Sufi and folk music ensembles & orchestras, and has also been the youngest recipient of almost all the awards that he has received in recognition of his outstanding contribution and achievements in the field of music including the prestigious United Nations ‘Mahatma Gandhi Seva Medal’ - Gandhi Global Peace Award, 2020, ‘Top Grade Artist’ by All India Radio, 2019, Dhrupad Samman - ‘Maharaja Swati Tirunal Travancore Award’, 2019, ‘Atal Shikhar Samman’, 2017 presented at the Parliament of India, ‘Dr. S. Radhakrishnan National Award’, 2017, ‘J&K State Icon’ title by Election Commission of India, 2016, ‘J&K Government Award’ - Highest Civilian Award of Jammu and Kashmir, 2011, ‘Bharat Shiromani Award’, 2009, ‘Sangeet Natak Akademi’s first ‘Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar’, 2006, amongst others. Having been presented with hundreds of felicitations across the world, his name features in various Biographical-Note Volumes published in India and abroad.
He is the bearer of the rich musical legacy of great masters of music of the fabled ‘Sopori Sufiana Gharana’ of Kashmir, the exclusive traditional Santoor family of India with its roots spanning over 10 generations over more than 300 years. Born in Kashmir, he learnt music under the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara of his mystic Shaivite - Sufi tradition from his grandfather late Pandit Shamboo Nath Sopori ji, the great Master musician hailed as the ‘Father of Music’ in Jammu and Kashmir, and from his father the Great Saint - Music Legend late Pandit Bhajan Sopori ji, the legendary Santoor virtuoso and music composer.
He has composed and introduced 4 new ragas - Raga Nirmalkauns, Raga MahaKali, Raga Sharda and also Raga Bhajaneshwari, a tribute to Pt. Bhajan Sopori ji, which have been widely acclaimed by the music connoisseurs and critics.
