1ZPRESSO 1XPLAINED: Review of the 1zpresso Lineup (feat ZP6 Special!) 

For those who are wondering why it’s pronounced as E’z but spelled with “1z”. It’s a word play using mandarin, the numeric 1 is pronounced as “yī” (character: 一) in mandarin.

Proud of 1Zpresso as a Taiwanese brand with lots of innovations, but I totally agree that the line-up is a little bit confusing. Really appreciate this video helping us choose!

NOTE- it seems the Q2 Heptagonal can, indeed, grind for espresso. My unit has trouble physically going finer, but perhaps there is a way I can reassemble to make it finer. Apologies here! I have not had espresso from it, but i imagine it is as similar to X Pro as can be. Don't forget to like/subscribe/share/comment if you haven't! This is so incredible! I got the K-plus about6-7 months ago and have been super happy with both pour over and espresso. I think this method of calibration is so much easier than other ones I have seen, which is awesome as that is one of my only pet peeves remaining with the grinder

awesome video love the in depth review of these grinders. I am very happy with my ZP6 purchase. I sent them an email when the original video came out and bought the grinder when it came out. It does do a really good job on filter and has a very similar burr to the Baratza's. Thank you for bringing the grinder back.

I have a JS-Plus which I use for my LaPavoni and the K-Max which is mainly for filter and some light roast espresso. You did a great job of clarifying 1Zpresso’s confusing lineup. The J series is particularly tricky as there are different burr sizes within the various models of that series. I wasn’t aware of the ZP6 but now I want to get one for my filter coffee.😅

It was a tough decision between J-Max and K-Max for me since I'm mainly having espresso but also do pour-over occasionally. It seems that K-Max has better tastes overall, but I was concerning whether its 22-micron adjustment is too wide for dialing in the espresso. Suddenly the K-Ultra came out with a slightly smaller step size and I went for it. Although I'm not a big fan of the handle design, I had no issue dialing in espresso with K-Ultra and found myself using it more often than Niche Zero because shots grinded by K-Ultra are generally having more vibrant taste notes and more stable (with less channeling). In my opinion, it just nailed the espresso, not mentioning it's already good at pour-over.

I've got an old 1zpresso Q2 Pentagonal and even with the burrs being less than ideal for filter (at least compared to the heptagonal version), it still makes a pretty solid cup of drip. It actually outperforms my Encore with the Virtuoso burrs installed.

Bought the JX-Pro about a year and a half ago. I got it for filter coffee, with the hopes of eventually getting into espresso. I absolutely love this grinder! I’ll probably be buying another 1ZPRESSO soon so I can leave one at work.

Thanks Lance I am loving my K-Plus and am so happy I got it🙂👍🏻 I think the one thing to add is that some of the grinders come with cases too. That was a big difference for me between buying a K-Plus and some of the other grinders on the market. It came with a case and all the things I need to clean it. It was amazing value even though it is at the top end for the 1zpresso range.

Thank you for this in depth review and the shared frustration with the line up. As someone who enjoys espresso and pour over, it caused so much anxiety selecting the right grinder. I ended up getting the Jmax which has been grinding perfect for espresso. Funny thing is when I had ordered the Jmax, they had accidently sent me the Kplus and almost considered keeping that instead of the Jmax but couldn't decide what differences made the difference. I did end up getting the correct one though. I can get very fine grinds for slayer type espresso pulls but I am glad that you went over why I can't get a great pour over with the burrs and fines. Ugh, guess I need to get the ZP6 now:/

These are really bad boys! Too bad nobody in Europe had them in stock couple of months ago when I was purchasing a grinder. I hope they become more and more popular and build community like Comandante.

After reading what GOAT had to say on burr spacing vs burr gap in conical burrs, and running tests on my Lido and Kinu, I think a quick and dirty conversion is to divide the burr gap by 3 to get the approximate burr spacing. So for burrs that are 300um apart, that roughly translates into 100um burr spacing. Again - quick and dirty, and better for a starting point rather than directly translating between grinders.

Didn't feel like I was getting the best dial-in-ability from my Breville Barista Express built in grinder even after playing with the internal burr. Have now ordered a J Max on the basis of this video and looking forward to getting those perfect shots in!

Great video. I bought the X-pro over the Q2 heptagonal and the Normcore v2 a month ago based on Kyle's video. It has served me well in my rekindled exploration of specialty coffee.

What an absolute beast of a review, Sir Lance! Awesome as always, very informative and entertaining. Would also like to know your thoughts on Kingrinder K6 vs 1zpresso Xpro. They have the same price point at about 180$ here in the Philippines, so I am torn on what to buy between the two.

I have the J-Max and I couldn't be happier. I wanted a 'do it all' grinder that would allow me to brew with my Flair without frustration as well as drip and batch brews. Speed of grind was also something important to me. This thing absolutely chews through a 15g v60 dose. Even though this is an 'espresso focuses' grinder I'd say 60-80% of the time I use this for filter coffee. I didn't want two grinders for different jobs and so this for me is perfect. If you're just brewing filter others will be better, but if you're looking to do everything I can't recommend it enough.

Totally agree with you. A K.I.S.S. approach is needed. One grinder for espresso, one for filter and a budget version (Q) is enough. And then adding a basic and “pro” (eg magnetic catch cup, silicon base, foldable arm) version of each would suffice… nicely done review.

After watching your previous video on the ZP6 Special and this one, I've immediately ordered it ! Too bad it is not available right now it dark grey, only in aluminium. Can't wait to try and experiment! Also ordered a Stagg EKG :D

Loving the ZP6 so far! Just got it a day ago for filter coffee, but I tested for espresso, just under right as I heard no rub and pulled a 25sec shot, 18g dose, pretty dang good and a little overextracted even. Not great to dial in as you have said, but it does go fine enough

9:58 THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY for me in this, was that the new 1Zpresso X-PRO *is basically a beefed up Q2.* god, thank you so much, this was driving me nuts!!! i have and love my Q2, so getting this one, for me, would be redundant. love the external dial tho for real. it's annoying on the inside, especially moving between different kinds of grinds. just between french press and espresso it's like "uuuuuuuugh god...... effort.............." because any tweaks involves opening it up. checking which one you are on, opening it up. setting it back to your usual, opening it up. love that it is portable tho.

Great video...deciding between Kmax or ZP6. Usually do medium-dark roast, Moka pot and Aeropress. I heard 1zpresso doesn't really recommend ZP6 for Moka as may be too much acidity...what are your thoughts on taste between the two for these two methods, and is it worth the extra $ over Kingrinder K6?

That buyer regret due to the complex product line-up is real man. I'd always wanted an 1Zpresso grinder as an update of my C2 Timemore grinder from my student years, and I happily purchased Xpro last week. I made the call after comparing the prices and based on the fact that I only do filter coffee, but now I'm sitting here wondering if I would've been better off getting either the ZP6 for better filter coffee, or K something to future proof for an expresso maker few years down the line. Well it is still a huge improvement from my C2 after all lol. P.S. Love your personality.

My roommate and I use a JX for our daily coffee grinding, not only can we dial it in really well to our very different coffees (I drink light roasts and they drink dark roasts) but it's also grinds so smoothly and wish such ease that I don't really see the point of buying an electric grinder.

Hi Lance, curious on your thoughts on two things. I’ve heard that Starbucks blonde espresso is pretty similar to other medium roast espressos and both the Starbucks blonde and regular espresso roasts come out as shots that don’t develop over time, get sweeter, but rather taste burnt, under extracted, bitter, sour, etc. Now, there are a select few Starbucks stores that I’ve been to (reserve stores) that have manual espresso machines and the espresso tasted somewhat better. I have also heard that you can get shots that develop from Starbucks espresso roast(s) from better espresso machines (perhaps even with Flairs), but I never get this experience at a general Starbucks store. Again, the same burnt taste, but yet I see crema, the body, and the heart. Most Starbucks I have been going to habe the Mastrena 2 machines. Ok- first question, what do you think contributes to the shots that don’t develop or taste nice, no matter the roast at Starbucks? I’m curious if you think the Mastrena 2 machines are meant to produce quantity and not quality (even though Starbucks will point to the three previously listed visual parts of a shot, the shots taste burnt) The machines are fully automatic. Maybe it’s constant under-extraction, too low of pressure, grind size the machine produces and internal burrs not good enough to produce clarity and.. tasty shots? And what are your thoughts on the differences between the 1zprrsso K Max and the Royal Flair grinders?😊 Thanks so much

Love my K-Plus. I've used it every day for over a year now and it hasn't let me down. From Cold Brew and French Press to Moka Pot and Aeropress (an even the occasional Espresso on ny Flair Pro), it's been able to take on everything I've thrown at it. I've actually been thinking of getting a Q2 to put inside my Aeropress for travel too. Good stuff.

Hi, Lance :). I got the X-Pro and am interestingly incredibly happy with it. However, I still hate that I'm getting a bunch of fines with it. Is it truly worthwhile to get the ZP6 Special? It sounds like the grinder I've always wanted. Super clarity. Didn't know that's what I wanted until watching your videos. Lol. Haven't shot the gun yet for the ZP6 only because I'm not sure I want to sell my X-Pro. Lol. But I'm definitely having FOMO, LOL!!!

Right, here's a question for you, Lance. Forgetting about practicality and price and just focusing purely on flavour, would you get the ZP6 or Fellow Ode with the SSP burrs (your best grinder for filter before diminishing returns). See, I was going to buy another electric grinder after my Wilfa Svart recently broke, but now I'm intrigued by hand grinders. Love your channel, mate, and you're so fun to watch. All the best!
