The Fuel Up Classic Channel loves a road trip and is quite clearly a fan of Land Rover Defenders. Lots will tell you a Defender 90 makes a terrible road trip car but is that true? To find out we drove a 20 year old TD5 Defender 2,000 miles in 10 days through France during a heatwave.
Has this trip inspired more overland travel or was it a journey of constant breakdowns and regret?
Watch the video to find out and don't forget to subscribe and turn on notifications for the Fuel Up Classic Channel so you don't miss any of the action. Lots more coming up from vlogging trips to classic car reviews.

I find it really incredibly distressing that your government has convinced you that buying a new car every few years is environmentally friendly. It costs a huge amount of energy to make a car. Defenders are amongst the most environmentally friendly vehicles because they are generally kept on the road for a long time. It's simple maths really. The corruption in the UK is really out of hand it looks like.

It’s bizarre the uk in the thought process on the surface you wouldn’t not expect there to be any corruption. But I’m the ever so longing persuit to make the uk green ev or hybrid cars have been pushed but contrary to belief Ev cars are not green. It takes 90,000 also miles for it to turn green now. Realistically the average consumer is not going to get any more than say 12 to 15,000 miles per year and getting a brand-new car, the likelihood of you keeping it more than 3 to 4 years as depreciation and things are evidently going wrong in the sell and then start the process all over again

I have only my second Defender in 30 years, this 1996 300TDI (no electronics) since 2006 and at the first opportunity it received a galvanised chassis. I did a trip from North East England , on the ferry to Rotterdam and then down to Geneva. For some reason the power steering pump drive shaft sheared in France, but it previously had a few years stood while I was working away. Coming back was a good foot of snow had fallen as I climbed from the lake, but I still managed Rotterdam the same day I started my journey back and caught the evening ferry. There were some squaddies, on another repeat trip I saw in Rotterdam, they were in a series MOD Land rover and had driven from Germany. Defenders are environmentally friendly if you keep on top of the chassis rust and keep them lubricated they are an investment. I will pass it on in the family when I stop driving.

Fantastic to hear you've had some great trips with yours! They're unlike almost any other car and become part of the family don't they.

@@fuelupclassic Absolutely true. At one time I had 4 dogs, 2 would get get very wet and muddy all day outside, but I could just hose out the back and wipe the seats. Muddy boots is just what they are designed for. I am not keen on the urban versions with fat wheels and a snorkel for the high street. The best is deep snow when others are challenged. Diff lock is great when used as it should be.

My wife and I did a similar trip in a 90 (1989) without any problems, we did a total of 7000 miles around Europe towing a caravan as well .

I have one, i love it: But no 😂 it is not the greatest car. In comparison between 4x4 i (personally) would say the older G-Wagon it is.

Most I have done in a day was 900miles in a TD5 130 , wasn't that bad really, just a very long day , something like 18 hours of driving. My Landys have been more reliable than all my car's.

Haha, I know exactly what you mean :). I've never had too much issue with the lack of shoulder space, but i'm not sure I own a pair of trousers that hasn't got a rip in them, from the seat adjustment lever, so conveniently placed to catch you every time you get out!

: ) not much room? made many trips by TD5 90 to SW France, three in the front and loaded to the roof with camping gear
@fuelupclassic

The only thing I found with mine was that once you had a few suitcases and then needed to put the dog (quite a large dog) in the back, there was very little room for anything else or for the dog. I ended up going back to a 110, just for that extra bit of space. Although this little TD5 90 was probably my favourite Defender to drive out of the 10 or so that i've owned.

As an ex: Land Rover owner (80's 88's classic Range Rover etc) I have just done 1945miles in Holland, Belgium, France, and Spain in a 2003 SWB Land Cruiser kdj125 at 32.6mpg (with aircon) and I'm amazed at your staying power.

I owned a Toyota Hilux 4X4 which I bought brand new. It was one of the most unreliable vehicles I ever had. It was replaced by a preowned Discovery II TD5. Previous owner was rather tight fisted so the vehicle had some issues for instance original fuel pump had to replaced at about 300 K km etc. But generally the Discovery was not more unreliable than the Toyota. Toyota reliability is an urban myth.
