PS: if someone knows what resistors or eeprom to tweak for overclocking, ..! ;-) datasheets.chipdb.org/IBM/PowerPC/970/PowerPC-970MP.pdf

I've been trying yo figure this out myself . People have tried to program these chips to give a boost in clocks . I would imagine 2.7 fir the dual core could be achieved easily I hope someone figured out how . Also if you are concerned about the liquid cooling system you can use the 2 ghz agp air cooled heatsinks and will work fine . There was no reason for apple to make these liquid cooled

Rene you are the man..Nice job. I’m glad you have a g5 also. I love mine and just because it’s old doesn’t mean you can’t have good time with it. More to follow.

I generally prefer PC, but I've always been amazed how well organised and, in my opinion, beautiful the internals of Apple computers are. Especially the desktops are a marvel of engineering.

Yeah, a pitty nowadays they engineered that to exorbitant expensive dimensions starting st 7000$ :-/

Hi René. Thanks for an interesting video, great effort! I suggest you get yourself a dual CPU G5 machine. They are not expensive if you are patient and scour the markets for one.

got two G4 MDD and a dual G5 macpro and an imac G5, g4 and g5 chips run hot, thinking of moving one of my G4 to a fractal case and run off a ATX supply to stop it being a a real windtunnel.

The fastest Little- OR BigEndian powerpc64 machine in a desktop form factor would probably RaptorCS's Blackbird. If it's just for building for powerpc64 (BE), it might be cheaper in the long run than keeping a system like this do the heavy lifting. PR mode for KVM even gives you a quasi G5 or G4 Apple emulated system without TCG. I'm running a libvirt/KVM instance simply booting a powerpc64 BE kernel and away I go with 32bit powerpc-linux-gnu userland. No worries though, if my wife wouldn't kill me I'd have a G5 under my desk as well by now and not just that Blackbird box and a few G4 PB/iMacs... :D

Your PSU actually comes from a Quad - a standard Dual-Core PSU has only one set of those 12v power connectors at the back of the machine, so yeah 🤷🏼‍♂️
@renerebe
@renerebe 3 года назад
@WizardNumberNext said that a week ago. But this is a 1st hand new machine, the only time it was not with me was when it was for PSU warranty repair (it failed!) to Apple's authorized service provider (Gravis, IIRC around 2006 Apple might not yet have their own stores in Germany). So I don't now they swapped in another SKU during warranty PSU replacement or if it came initially with that already. Thankfully the PSU never failed again in the last 14 years ;-) Maybe Apple replaced all lower wattage with higher wattage / newer PSU to never see them again in service, ..?
@jajkomaster
@jajkomaster 3 года назад
@@renerebe idk, perhaps that's the psu they had on hand at the time and since they already switched to intel they might have simply not bothered to put the "correct" PSU in, idk 😂

to remove the entire cpu block the ones from the inner part are not necessary to unscrew right? just the 4 on the corners, confirm plz if not i have to buy a tool xd

Do you know if the old single core, dual socket machines (2.7GHz) are upgradable to two 970MP 2.5GHz?
@renerebe
@renerebe 6 месяцев назад
It's probably unlikely that they use a compatible pinout and bus protocol. Maybe dig up some more technical specs about the chips and sockets?

This really seems to be a delicate task ! Orrrrr ! I am curious, if I can find the error on my G5 Quad 2.5 GHz one ! Hopefully it's only the PowerSupply (1000 Watts) in my case.
@renerebe
@renerebe 5 лет назад
This really early (purchased just the days or week after lauch) power supply failed after a year during the warranty. It was swapped by an AASP (Gravis) in ~2006/7. It worked since then ;-) Let's hope it survives constant load of the 2.5GHz CPU upgrade ;-) though as that is a newer revision maybe it is more efficiient, ... at least ht should have working NAP ;-) ps: do you see signs of leaked water / corrosion on your quad?
@markuskaltenegger5571
@markuskaltenegger5571 5 лет назад
Bits & more by René Rebe I will have to check, if it leaks water & will tell you later on. Unfortunately I am too busy to check it right away. So pls. be patient with me ! I love your videos for the Octane with Linux, too. We should talk when I am less busy :-)

Nice video. I did mine last fall. Now I have a quad comming my way and I want to try to make a quad 2.3 air cooled or quad 2.0. ( I’l shorten the massive 2.3 heatsink on a cnc wire edm at my wokplace) . I only need a second 2.3 cpu + heatsink to try.

Surely those two centre screws (and the cover pin) forged the idea for the engineers to make Macs difficult to repair from then on.

What kind of TDP do these G5s have? The cooler looks like it's big enough for 150+ Watts.
@renerebe
@renerebe 5 лет назад
According to the internet: PowerPC 970MP 2,0 GHz (TDP: 70 W maximal, 56 W typisch)* PowerPC 970MP 2,5 GHz (TDP: 125 W maximal, 100 W typisch)* According to some Wiki there were also "power optimized" ones at: PowerPC 970MP 2,0 GHz (TDP: 60 W maximal, 48 W typisch)* PowerPC 970MP 2,5 GHz (TDP: 115 W maximal, 92 W typisch)* not sure how one would identify those, the die looked pretty plain
@dimitrijvolcov
@dimitrijvolcov 5 лет назад
@@renerebe Even at 125W it looks totally overengineered if you compare it to what Intel shipped with their highest-end Dual Core Netburst CPUs. Also these massive screw-on powerlines...

Running the thermal calibration yesterday, I realized they probably went with such overkill cooling to be quieter. E.g. nearly inaudible when background idle (aka moving the mouse and typing around). Still interesting how loud it can become under sustained load though :-)

hello, great video! what is the name of this ibm socket ?
@renerebe

I would need to google it, but it might be an Apple not ibm socket for their potentially proprietary PCB modules.
