2 AM Rant: How to Save GameStop from Themselves! An 8 Point Plan of Action! GameStop Can Be Saved!

Recorded in a quiet basement office, somewhere near Philadelphia, at 2 AM EST...after I came back from a night out (note: there may or may not have been some alcohol in my system when this video was recorded...lol).
Welcome back to Reserved Investments, the ONLY non-hype driven collectibles finance channel that caters to the entire antiques and collectibles trade! In today's video, I discuss my thoughts on how disgraced video game retailer GameStop can be saved...if they want to be saved!

It's over for Gamestop, there is no saving them. From what I hear the physical game media selection at Best Buy and Target are reduced. Most people are now buying games digitally, regardless if we like it. The stores that some people are going to buy physical games are mostly online or the retro mom & pops. GameStop really doesn't deserve their business. The future is damaged games shipped from Amazon unless your lucky enough to find an in store copy elsewhere.

Brilliant video. Your plan is unapologetic about the business they are in and has the courage that if they go down, they go down fighting for the ideals they were originally set up with. And the point about treating employees and customers well should be a mantra for the whole developed world. Its what being human is all about. Its why when the Berlin Wall came down EVERYONE went west. Everyone who cares about the future of America and hand wings over AI should concentrate in this area. Someone who is knowledgeable and passionate in these transactions should be paid well and respected. The money should not be concentrated in the C Suite where they are playing games with the fiat system and doing NOTHING for the industry they are in, which includes their own employees on the ground. I've been thinking that Gamestop could have gotten into publishing videogames for years now, so I don't even understand why they haven't made deals with companies like Limited Run Games to release some games exclusively through them. It just seems like such an obvious move to me, how can't they see it? I still remember when they had the exclusive rights to sell Xenoblade Chronicles for the Wii in the US and thinking that was such an interesting business move for them since it really wasn't common back then. Great video as always!

Exclusive rights to xenoblade the jrpg devs that was at square enix and they made chrono trigger and xenogears team. The xeno series was their baby. Nintendo owns monolith. Amazing that GameStop had exclusive rights.

I haven't been inside a Gamestop since 2017 but my number one complaint about them has always been that they were clueless about the condition of the games they sold being of any importance. I don't know how many times they tried to sell me a gutted game as "new" or a used game for essentially the full price when it was missing a manual or even a case and don't get me started on their pathetic attempt at getting into the retro game market where you had no clue as to the condition of what they were selling and that they would frequently miss obvious fakes. How could a video game retailer know so little about selling video games? Edit: I had almost forgotten about this but the way they treated DS and 3DS games was atrocious. They'd just throw away the boxes even if the customer traded it in with a box!

I once saw a case for Pokemon Platinum in the trash can behind the counter (this was some point right before they stopped selling DS games so Platinum was already valuable). I asked if I could have it since it was being thrown away and the clerk said she couldn't let me have it for free, nor could she sell it.

Sorry to say but short sellers serve a very important function. They can tell you what companies have decent business models and which ones don't. Gamestop's business model is unsustainable and was given a false sense of security by the recent drama. Shorting stock is a valued counterbalance to CEOs and various corporate sycophants who bullshit everyone on earnings calls when they lie about how strong their company is when in reality they are simply desperate to maintain share price.

I live in a small country town, and yes there is a GameStop on the Main Street with no customers ever in there, the highlight of my week is visiting the store and seeing all the $2 PS3 Sports Games in the Specials Bin… I am not happy that you are advocating for this store to close, Regards Kimmy.

1) GameStop has been closing unprofitable stores as the leases expire for the past two years. 2) Pilot flagship stores are in Manhattan and Milan, IT. 3) Agree with the most of the rest of the video except… Ryan Cohen kicked out all the Vulture Private Equity plants from the board of directors, and currently leads the company as the Chairman of the Board, CEO (without pay or stock option), and CIO. He has been CEO for only about 6-7 months now and hasn’t cashed out a single penny from his $GME holdings. Completely different management than the PE vultures that were in place from 2012-2021.

That rant was fantastic. Great video. I think they need bigger stores and should also get into TCG games. Create community. Maybe even TCG and video game tournaments. They would need some great and experienced employees. I agree, though. It's sad to see some retailers close their doors over the years. Tell you what. You don't know what you have until it's gone.

Can you elaborate on the graded video game sales? How would GameStop stores acquire them? Are customers supposed to trade them in for a pittance? How would pricing work when this niche is still so speculative in terms of "value," roughly speaking? What grading companies would be supported? Not trying to cut you up by any means, I find this particular point in the video genuinely interesting. Please keep up the great content!

@richterbelmont5506 I never considered that GameStop themselves could throw their hat into grading, Shawn made it sound as if they would sell already graded games by Wata, VGA, CGC etc. GameStop grading games sounds like a foolish idea unless they do a lot of research beforehand, would probably need a large infusion of invested capital too

Graded video games pretty much only sell online or in educated scenarios such as at a convention or between collectors. Just is practically no way for GameStop to handle graded games foreseeably. Many game stores can't even sell stuff like that. But their biggest mistakes are there lack of education laziness and refusal to take in and respect the games that have been offered to them and would make them good income

Over time they will gravitate towards your idea of flagship stores only after they have already closed down not only their underperforming stores but also most of their stores. This is by and large because the push to digital media is coming from all directions and to save the company from becoming the next Blockbuster, this move will need to happen. Physical media is going away and Gamestop is big enough to push the cause. In the short term 5-20 years, you will be right. In the long term, the take will be the company's undoing. The company needs to add new value for people to come into the stores and just carrying physical modern and retro game medium is not it.

Yeah. I think this is a great plan. With the internet, going to a store had become more of a rare/exclusive event and commodity and should be presented as such. Nothing survives where I live, but personally, I'd rather have a small store with a open space in the middle, keeping movement/access flow, and have lots of decor and other misc items on the walls and in the corners, and the rest you propose sounds great

We all know that digital age is coming, we all see less and less DVD & Music CD's at our local Best buy. GameStop will fall only way they be around is to have few stores & mainly selling online. I like to see them get into graded video games or maybe branch out into GameStop auctions selling their own trademark graded games. You had me at Funkoland used to be my favorite weekend hang out store.

A better title for this vid would be “How GameStop can win over collectors” … bc this tactic of doubling payroll expense + pouring funds into marketing and new infrastructure to super-serve a niche market of gamers is DOA. Putting a WATA 8.5 Goldeneye on the shelf, or making the new Shantae Genie indie game store exclusive won’t save this dying company. GameStop was a multibillion dollar co with millions of customers. Most left to buy digital. There’s only ever a few bidders per graded game auction anyway. And the modern WATA games already sitting on eBay, slashing “buy it now” price. I don’t know if CIB vintage could catch on outside the biggest city locations. Selling “used games” was their bread and butter, but these are a niche brand of used.

You're wrong about closing the rural stores, I know tons of people that talk about how when you live in a rural area, often times the only fun thing to do by yourself is play video games, and that would provide a great source of continuous reliable business to those stores and help prevent the reliance on online retailers.

I agree with you brick and mortar is toast for modern games. Pivot to retro game is fine but that is a niche market 1% the size of their current market. Retro gaming is a fad, I think one mom and pop retro game store per city max is enough.

Also send this to maranta rantz and other gme RU-vidrs that are very very very very rare since they are typically p n d channels using gme name to lure others in. For crypto side the market place I would have liked them to make staking a possibility and then make it into a form of bank they can just take 1% of the staking rewards then or something small. Definitely not what coin base. Back to gaming a combination yes but the issue is what they will do first. Gme is shutting down unprofitable stores sorry Timmy you live in middle of nowhere please order online or take a trip to a big city and step into our big store where we hold gaming events and conventions. you have everything here. Can even eat in the store while playing out games. It’s the GameStop theme park for video games. Yepyep

Heh GameStop already doing that shutting down under performing stores that’s where revenue declines are coming from and downsizing. Now gme is profitable. but continuing on maybe implement rest of your ideas. become the location where people game and hold gaming events and maybe Comic-Con’s etc
