Classroom Management is maybe the most difficult area for teachers to master. Here are two areas that I had to grow from in order to become the teacher I was called to be.

waiting for silence does not work in secondary because they don't care; it's really not about you! But it does work in elementary when kids are in early elementary grades they really are motivated by wanting the teacher to like them.

@@zaccheuswilson5297 secondary it’s all about relationships and showing the students you care about them I always greet them at the door, tell them how much I appreciate them and let them know I see them for who they are no judgment just genuine care

Very true. The kids change every year but the characteristics, behaviors, abilities, etc... are the same from year to year.

Mr. Reynolds, this is the answer I’ve been trying to search for. I just didn’t know how to do it. Why should we give up on them? Because I remember when I was their age and motivation is not the first thought when you’re a preteen in a different environment pulled from your home. It takes an act of congress to do things that you don’t want to do, but learning how to see the bigger picture and why it’s important is key to teaching. Thanks for this! I’m looking forward to seeing more classroom management strategies.

Have you ever had a motivator, something the students really want, that ends up being a distraction because it becomes too much of a focus? What would you do about it. I let my students have a few minutes of free time at the end of class, but students can loose it. The students love it so much that they want to get done quickly and who loose that free time can be so angry that they end up trying to point out anyone else who they think should loose their time.

I’ll put it in the list Jajaira! What kind of “unicorn” do you have?
@jajairasequeira8637
@jajairasequeira8637 Год назад
Thank you so much for the reply. I would like to point out that I am a first year middle school math teacher, so my unicorn might not be the same compared to someone else with more experience :) However, I have a student who has really bad anger management and as a result, none of the other students wants to engage with him in class during group work or pair shares. This causes my student to disengage in class rather quickly and become disruptive in class.

Year 22… I’ve got a class of 32 students with about 50% repeaters in earth science. Day 2 and they’re already doing nothing but staring at their cell phones and ignoring me. It’s not like 3 of them, it’s like 23 of them and the remaining actual first year freshmen are visibly shell shocked. Anyone have anything helpful to offer?

I teach 9th grade English at a Title I school primarily Hispanic students, quote have said, " I don't give a fuck about this shit, Ms". Then they will continue to disrupt by dancing around the classroom, and singing or trying to talk to anyone for no reason other than to stop class instruction. I had this issue today with four 9th-grade Hispanic boys. What would you advise in this situation?
@CJReynolds
@CJReynolds Год назад
Hi Taylor! First, I’m really sorry you are dealing with this type of behavior. I can’t even answer this hear. I’m going to make a video on it. I’ll do my best to get it out quick so it’s timely for you. ☺️

Same issues here. I've been teaching in that environment for years, but it's gotten worse this year. It's gotten to the point where when the class gets too loud, I blow a whistle. Those that are still talking get one verbal warning, then a second, then they end up on my "parent phone call list" on the board, then if that does not deter them they are removed from the class and written up on a referral. It sucks and I don't like doing it, but the whistle and publicly visible parent phone call list has helped a little bit. Still trying to figure it out though!
