If people don't like precision they can go somewhere else to get their woodworking content. Keep doing you William, there are plenty of us that appreciate it.

Viewing this almost exactly 3 years after it was made. This 2-cut method for the miter sled, and the 5-cut method for the cross-cut sled is so well explained and so straightforward, who wouldn't want to put this little extra effort in to make perfect 90s and 45s?

5 years for me, it's almost to half a million views. it's very basic math, might take a couple of passes to sink in but whatever. good stuff.

William you have done it again! I have been hating all the 'So long as both sides add up to 90° it will be fine' videos. I found this video yesterday but the sound was not working for me, but thank goodness it was fine today. Now I have an approach to achieving acceptable accuracy, and I offer my sincere thanks for demonstrating it. I started my working life as a toolmaker, and finished it running the external instrument calibration and repair contract at Ford UK Product Development, so it is important to me to be as accurate as is reasonably possible. I am enjoying working with wood in my retirement despite the frustrations it has with it being impossible to work to the tolerances I was used to, and even when you got it close, a week later it would be miles out. But that is no reason not to do our best, and I thank you for giving us the tools make that 'best' a whole lot closer than other RU-vid channel presenters offer us.

Recently I discovered your tutorials , your delivery is excellent , your sense of humor clean , and the knowledge of experience impossible to assign a price to . Sadly there are people so uncouth , so ignorant , so arrogant and self absorbed who make it a mission to show the rest of humanity the ugly side and mean spirited nature of their character , as they have with you William . But as others have stated , there many more of us who enjoy learning from you than exist of those who have behaved so appallingly towards you . Thank you for sharing with us , you valuable knowledge and experience.

I agree. Not everyone needs to be so precise, but when you do, it is nice to know there is someone like you teaching us how. Thank you for showing us your techniques. I think math teachers would be smart to show your videos to students who don’t think they will ever have a use for the formulas they are learning. You may spark their interest.

Love that you're still reading the comments 2 years after putting the vid up. I'm a weekend woodworker (I work with lathes, mills and CNC machines in my day job), and I used your methods last year when I made both sleds. Being able to quickly cut accurate angles makes my carpentry much more enjoyable - not necessarily better ! - and enjoyment is what's important to me. At the time of writing, vid has 225K views, 8.2k likes and just 94 downvotes - I think those figures speak volumes. More please :D

Hi William, I am new to the channel but this is exactly the kind of content I want to find as I am an experienced woodworker just wanting to learn more. Anyone who can't or doesn't want to back up their methods with math/science isn't the kind of person I want to take advice from. RU-vid is littered with newbie videos and guys/gals with shops full of sponsored gear but who don't know what they're doing. Your channel is for serious carpenters and woodworkers and I'm glad for it. Cheers.

I have always loved every video you put out. William don't listen to those trolls. I once edited an video from a young woodworker and tried to warn him of grave errors he was making. One so serious he was lifting a piece of plywood while the table saw was running. No riving knife was attached. I warned him of the danger he was creating. I had several trolls tell me I was wrong to correct him.

First sled I built is a direct copy of the one from 5 cuts. The background "math" is essential for those of us who actually want to learn the How of what you do, this allows us to work from principles we understand, rather than trying to follow a recipe. From understanding comes problem solving, which ultimately allows us to create our own solutions. Please keep up what you do, way better to smarten the audience up than to dumb down the content. Thanks for sharing and cheers from BC!

William: I have a business that required machinist level precision on my wood blanks that I finish on a CNC router. I make 100's of pieces at a time that all need to be within a few thousands of an inch so pieces fit together properly. When I made my cross slid sled, I used your formula for ensuring a perfect right angle on my blanks. Thank you for making it easy. For me it was a life saver. Math is so important to me and I stress it to my sons who are my business partners. Work at times is a lesson in math. Keep up the great work. Master Monk

Great sled videos Mr Ng, especially for beginners, as for those who find simple math beyond their capabilities and intelligence, well they maybe shouldn’t be allowed to be using sharp power tools or even butter knifes and spoons without supervision. Thank you William for sharing this. People are right that woodworking is supposed to be fun, and it’s no fun having non-square cuts or miters that do not fit perfectly. There are a lot of videos out there on how to build square and miter jigs. Also thank you very much for your 5 cut method; your video and explanation was very easy to follow and rather simple yet quite ingenious. I now finally have a sled I can trust to within a tho and I couldn't be happier, no more frustration with not being able to simply make a perfectly square cut!! (that was getting annoying....). Please keep up the videos as long as you can and ignore the trolls. The vast majority of us highly appreciate your content and your teaching style. THANK YOU!!!

William, I just completed the Cross Cut sled and then yesterday the miter sled. WOW, don't let the negative comments about "math" ever deter you! These plans are 100% logical and you spent the time to use mathematics to your advantage, something to be admired! I made one alteration to your plans in that I added T-track hold downs one either side of the cut line in both sleds. I used the hold downs for every cut to adjust the cross cut sled sled in the 5-cut method. Using the hold down assured me that the piece was always tight to the back fence and couldn't move during the cuts. I got the cross cut sled accurate to .0021". Then I used it for the 90-degree cuts on the 4" molding pieces for the Miter sled. After a rather initial significant adjustment to "B" of .138", I literally was unable to measure ANY error whatsoever, not even the hint of a dial movement of when comparing "A" to "B" on the 4" piece! Awesome result and now I have two sleds that are taking woodworking accuracy to a new level. If you have an email address to share, I can send pics of the final sleds. You can email me at ghope@optonline.net. Thanks for the awesome videos! I would love to know your thoughts on how to approach making dedicated sleds for 30 degree cuts (6-sided) as well as 22 +1/2 degrees (8-sided) applications :-)

your "5 Cuts to a "Perfect" Cross-Cut Sled" is the ultimate and most brilliant there ever was and will be on RU-vid or anywhere else. you made it possible to get as accurate as 0.00001 on sleds. so many people since then are using your calculations to calibrate their sled. pay no attention to the jealous morons that don't get it or are plain envious because they been using and cutting with errors and can't handle the truth. perfection is always misunderstood and frowned upon by those that can't rise to that level.

Made this sled, it works. I had one frustrating problem that had to do with the wood I was using for cutting the small triangles to measure the off-angle. I used a long piece of particleboard scrap that I had cut straight. Consequently there was tearout on the corner of the triangle where the blade came out of the board. I didn't realize how it was throwing off my measurements, but I could see that with successive triangle test cuts the error was all over the place. When I finally realized it, I cut a piece of high quality plywood into parallel strips for test pieces and I used a sacrificial backer board that extended past the cut path of the blade. I made very sure the backer board was parallel. I cut another test triangle, this time both corners were sharp, made the adjustment based on the calcs, did one more test triangle to check and it was close enough that I could have only made it worse with any further adjustment. My first mitered project has come out just fine. If you don't have a micrometer or caliper that can measure in thousandths of an inch or hundredths of a millimeter, I recommend you get one. You'll find it pays for itself over and over in many other situations as well.

I made William's sled using the 5 cut method. (Thank you!) The method works really well and I got it (once) to 0.001". Trouble was, as soon as it was screwed together (despite clamping), the fence moved a fraction and the sled accuracy was out. To solve the problem, strips of 220 grit paper were cemented onto the bed and onto the adjustable end of the fence to make a friction fit when pressed together. Second, a slot was cut in the bed at the adjustment end, and a loose hole drilled through the sandpaper and fence. A carriage bolt with a washer and wing nut was inserted for adjustment with the wing nut on top of the fence. (The bolt head was recessed into the bed for clearance). Endless adjustments could then be made without the adjusting end of the fence beginning to look like a swiss cheese. Because of the problem with inserting screws throwing the jig out of true, glue was applied on the outside of the fence and bed, and left overnight. The whole assembly was then clamped before screwing, and this time the sled error came out at about 0.003". Good enough. As a hint you can use 1.2.3 blocks to make pencil marks on the bed (parallel but away from the fence). You will be amazed at how little the fence has to move to make the corrections. Hope this helps someone like me who was beside themselves with frustration. Thanks William. Next project is the mitre sled!

I subbed to you because you explain things using logic. The logic makes it easier for me. If people don't like your math, there are thousands of videos on woodworking for them. You have something that sets you apart. Use that and your audience will grow. You have over 100k subs and only 27 videos. That Alone says your doing something right!

Ah William, it’s over a year ago since I first viewed this very informative and wonderfully presented video. I had almost forgotten the pleasure of watching your channel. With reference specifically to cabinet making standards joinery, your skill, knowledge and presentation skills are amongst the best on RU-vid. It would be wonderful to see you re-appear! I just made a panel sled and used your "5 cuts" method to align the fence to .001" over a 30 inch fence. As an engineer, I LOVE the precision you apply to your methods. Thank you!

I began learning framing, trim and cabinet making from my father starting at the age of about 14. I’m now 58 and still learning. I’ve been wanting to make a crosscut sled for awhile. Thanks for posting this. I also watched your video on box joints. Great videos brother! I’m still learning even as s grandpa!

It's amazing that people get mad at others because of their own failings. You are doing a GREAT job, William, don't let anyone ever tell you any different. Those of us who appreciate precision enjoy your tutelage. Those that don't, you should just ignore.

Just started watching you. Thanks for you instruction on perfecting a sled, though it was complicated I have worked it out. I think😁. There is an old saying “haters going to hate” don’t be disturbed by them. Keep up the teaching.

I was a motorcycle frame and front end straightener, we worked in very tight tolerances. Your techniques and expertise, very refreshing! Shooting for perfection is not a bad thing. I'm terrible at math, but you make it clear and fun to learn. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Keep up the great work!

William, I have only been interested in woodworking since retiring but I want you to know you're an inspiration, thank you so much. You have helped me engage with my thinking again as I used to be a JavaScript programmer and this is food for my thoughts. You're a truly gifted teacher.

I LOVE this stuff! An easy way to fix inaccuracies. If 4th grade math is too much for someone I think they have bigger issues than your videos. Thanks for sharing this stuff with the world. Hope all is well. It's been a while...
