Our 2 day hike from Juta to Roshka via Chaukhi Pass, camping at Abudelauri Lakes on the way. This spectacular hike crosses from Khevi to Khevsureti, two neighbouring regions in the Caucasus Mountains of northern Georgia.
The Juta to Roshka hike can be completed in 1 day if you’re fast and fit, staying in guesthouses in Juta and Roshka villages at either end. Or, tackle the trek over 2 days and camp at gorgeous Abudelauri Lakes, like we did.
Chaukhi Pass sits at 3340 m and is usually passable from July to September. The descent from the pass to Abudelauri Lakes is very steep, on loose shale - not for the fainthearted! You definitely need proper all weather hiking gear, ideally including hiking poles, to tackle this trek.
Like the look of these places but don’t fancy doing the full hike? It’s also possible to visit the Juta Valley or Abudelauri Lakes on either side of the Chaukhi Massif just as a day trip, without crossing the pass itself. You can get to Juta easily from Kazbegi (Stepantsminda). And you can drive via Barisakho town to Roshka village and hike to Abudelauri Lakes and back from there.
If you want to plan your own hike, check out our complete hiking guide over on the blog (www.goingthewh.... We detail the route, provide maps and GPX track downloads, and cover all the practical stuff like transport to/from the trailheads, what to pack, and where to stay.
Happy Hiking!

The first of our multi-day hikes through the Caucausus Mountains of Georgia! Hope you enjoy this 'silent hiking' style film. In the second half (21:40) we breakdown our hike experience, share practical tips for the trail, and talk about the filming process. For everything you need to know to plan your own hike, check out our accompanying guide over on the blog - www.goingthewholehogg.com/juta-to-roshka-via-chaukhi-pass/. Thanks for watching! Kim & Del

Yeah it’s a great hike! Still a bit early for it now though due to snow. I think technically camping on non-private land isn’t allowed during current curfew hours (11pm til 5am), but in reality it’s unlikely to be an issue.

amazing contant guys! the films and the blog information are super, thank you for share! I just would like to ask you about the food, what food supplies do you usually take on these camping expeditions?
@GoingTheWholeHogg
@GoingTheWholeHogg 3 года назад
Thank you! On these hikes we made up some meals with dehydrated vegetables, bulgur wheat or buckwheat, spices, stock cube, then added some nuts and seeds and shaved parmesan after cooking it. But it is quite water and gas intensive to cook that, and actually we prefer to take dehydrated meals (Firepot are our favourite, a UK brand). For breakfast usually powdered milk with muesli or porridge, then snacks like Snickers, trail mix. The dehydrated veggies and meals can't be bought in Georgia so we brought them from the UK or got them sent to Tbilisi via Kiwipost. Hope this helps! Cheers, Kim

Do you know ((Mount Kazbek))?? what is the best month to climb this Mount? Thank you so much
@GoingTheWholeHogg
@GoingTheWholeHogg Год назад
We have never climbed to the peak, only to the head of Gergeti Glacier at 3300 m. A quick Google search is coming back with June - late September, with July - August being the peak months. This is in line with the general trekking season when there’s the least snow and the temperatures are highest. There are various companies offering guided expeditions to the summit (5054 m) but if you just want to hike up as far as the glacier, check out this guide: www.goingthewholehogg.com/hiking-to-gergeti-glacier-and-gergeti-trinity-church/

I have done this hike from Juta to those same lakes around 3 months ago. There was a couple taking the same place for the tent which you've occupied, they were very nice couple - from Ukraine and Netherlands. I was staying a bit above (between this lake and the larger one). I had to take the same route back the next day though, so it was pretty much 2000 meters ascend and descend in two hiking days, which was more than just huge for me as a newbie :) I try to take some dog food on the trail with me in Georgia to feed stranding mountain dogs :)
@GoingTheWholeHogg
@GoingTheWholeHogg Год назад
I bet that was really tough going back the same way, it's a big and steep climb to the pass from the lakes! Good for you with the dog food, we started doing this too after a while, so many great doggo companions on the trails in Georgia!

What a lovely video. Makes the walks in the Orkneys a mere breeze :-) I've not read all your stories yet, but the dogs certainly added a charming note; they had that agreeable look about them. Looking forward to the next one. Edit: Have you considered using the small water filtration units?
@GoingTheWholeHogg
@GoingTheWholeHogg 3 года назад
Thanks for watching and appreciating, Alexander! It was certainly tougher than any walks we did on Orkney! As long as they aren't protective sheep dogs, most dogs we've met in Georgia have been very friendly and keen for a hike. And we are always delighted to have them join us. We use a Steripen to sterilise our water, filtering through a Nalgene water bottle filter first. It's fast, easy to use, rechargeable and pretty lightweight. It works for us as I like to fill up my water bladder with 2 - 3 litres of sterilised water, but also drink out of a water bottle sometimes.

Oh amazing, that's so great to hear Tina is still out exploring the mountains with her various trail humans! It's a cracking walk, and heading back to Juta skips that tough descent, not a bad option! Got any other hikes planned in Georgia?

Thank you so so much for bringing attention to this wonderful hike! I have done this hike with my girlfriend just this August and it was one of the most exciting hikes that I have done so far. We didn't have a place to leave our stuff so I carried about 20kg with me, which was quite the challenge (so big respect for you carrying all that video gear as well!). We camped below the pass when you walk through the gravel fields. Being above the clouds and watching the sun go down in the most beautiful arrangement of colors was stunning and so rewarding! But already the way up there... every time you turn around and look back down its more stunning than when you looked before! Watching this back gives me a warm feeling not only of reliving this hike but also of connection with you having walked the same paths as I have. Thank you so much for capturing the beauty of this hike so well. No footage will ever do justice as to how amazing this hike was for me, but this does a pretty good job, thank you! (I also love all your other videos, the style, the quality, the hikes you choose, are all immaculate)

Thank you so much, what a pleasure it was to read this comment of yours! We wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of this hike… it remains us one of our favourites in Georgia 🇬🇪. We would love to go back and camp below the pass, having seen pictures of sunset from there, it really looks amazing 🤩 Really glad you enjoyed watching this, and that it gave you that sense of connection and brought back good memories too. Thanks again for watching and for taking the time to leave such a great comment 😃
