I knew our trains in the US aren't great, but that was inexcusable, especially for $1000. I do love seeing your reactions to new things, like the school buses and the french toast. Thank you for taking us all along on your travels!

When I see vids of capsule hotels / trains in Japan, I'm so embarrassed for the US. $1k for this ride here. Expensive. Gross/dirty/disgusting, emblematic of many things, customer service, morals, values, on and on...
@izzieluv
@izzieluv Год назад
I think part of it has to do with how commonly it is used as a method of travel in each country. I could be wrong, but it seems to be a more common way to travel in Japan for just everyday type travel where as in the US it is more of a novelty and you take a train specifically to travel by train. Now I will say considering that it is a bit weird that they haven't upgraded more to make things nicer and more luxurious, but I'm guessing that has to do with revenue.

@@izzieluv Yeah about the upgrades on luxury multiple companies have tried that but they end up not being popular. You mentioned that people ride trains on a daily basis so the vast majority of riders are travelling for business, not for vacation. That being said a lot of Japanese transportation RU-vid channels don't feature many of the higher-end tourist oriented trains that run in the countryside of Japan. JR Kyushu's trains are especially impressive in this regard!

Since you were paying the most expensive room rate, you should have asked to switch to the ViewlinerII. There's no excuse for that pounding door. I'm glad the trip overall wasn't a total disaster, though. There's a reason why most Americans don't travel by train (and we totally envy your system). You could have flown to Chicago for a lot less $$$ - like for $86.00 non-stop one way on Delta. The remaining $914 would have bought you an amazing hotel room. Thanks for taking us with you; it was very educational!

If the idea is simply to get from point to point, then yeah, go by plane. But if you are going to see the countryside, a plane isn't going to do that for you. It's a shame our trains suck so badly.

I love your channel, because it shows how travel experiences _should_ be. In general, travel experiences in the USA are abysmal-as this video shows-and stupidly expensive when compared to an analogous trip in Japan. Here, in the US, the prices are high, the quality and comfort are bad, and the service is hostile, at best. In Japan, the trip is comfortable with good food and amenities, and the staff treat you with respect. The reason I don't travel often here is because the experience is always bad-VERY bad, compared to your travel experiences in Japan.
@Sogeking995

The video shows long distance diesel train travel which is logistically ridiculous and frankly shouldn’t even exist at this scale. Comparing Amtrak to all travel in Japan is nonsense, because Amtrak is not how 99% of people will ever travel here. That does not mean that all travel in the US is overly expensive or awful, that’s just not true.
@HeyIFoundACamera
@HeyIFoundACamera Год назад
@@Sogeking995 The only reason 99% of people don't consider long distance rail travel as a viable option here is _because_ it's so bad here. People do long distance rail in Japan all the time. It's not that it's unrealistic or "logistically ridiculous;" it's that _we do a terrible job of it._ We could argue about diesel vs electric (almost all of Japan is electrified), but what it really comes down to is reliable, comfortable, respectful service, which Amtrak doesn't have-and never has had. If you're not in a hurry, then long-distance (high-speed) rail is superior to air travel in every metric. The journey should be enjoyed as much as the destination.
@Sogeking995
@Sogeking995 Год назад
@@HeyIFoundACamera I doubt that’s true. Most Americans have no idea what the state of Amtrak is, have not ever ridden and never will because a.) it is unreasonably expensive, and b.) it takes significantly longer to reach a destination than flying. The US is 26 times larger than Japan with its major cities vastly more spread out. Yes, there is a logistical reason why long-distance train travel is not as viable here. If Americans want rail service, they need to think of it in terms of regional rail that can take you to cities in neighboring states. NYC to Chicago is already pushing the limits of what feasibly makes sense in train travel vs. flying, both in terms of cost and time. It’s a similar distance of Sendai to Hiroshima, something no one would choose a train for if Shinkansen wasn’t an option and even then flying is cheaper and faster. The other alternative is to invest in high-speed technology beyond what Amtrak offers, but of course that is multiple steps down the road from where we are now with no dedicated passenger rail lines in most of the country. Rail service would be much nicer and cheaper if there were private companies competing for it as in Japan, and that would be happening if there was a market for it. Neither are true because of the reasons I mentioned above. There’s obviously a reason why so much more money and variety and quality is present in the air travel industry than train industry here, and vice versa in Japan.
@straightpipediesel
@straightpipediesel Год назад
@@HeyIFoundACamera You're buying the Japanese propaganda. The most popular vacation route in Japan is Tokyo to Sapporo (ignoring Okinawa). That's 10 hours by Shinkansen and requires a train change, and runs for about $211. If you fly, it's 1.5 hours, and $86. What do you think people do? Japanese find the train impractical even within their own country.
