When fishing the Fraser River for large "oversized" sturgeon we use 150lb mainline braid, then we slide the slider onto the main line followed by surgical tubing or beads. Then we use a big 3/0 swivel and then a 140lb 30-40 inch leader followed by an 8/0-12/0 hook. we typically use weights in the range of 12oz to 22oz.. Cheers :)
Awesome video.... I haven't been fishing in 10 years and I have to remember how to setup a rig all by myself. My husband use to do it all for me. But I want to do it myself!
I have fish sturgeon for awhile myself. I have a good tip for you so you won’t have to used the extra line to tie down the bait so it won’t be moving around. Used a regular snell knot to tie the hook. When you wrap the bait the hook just magic thread the bait well with the knot and it won’t be moving around. Try it next time. Love your sturgeon video.
Yo Samong, your explanations and presentation style is so clear. Great uni knot and tying bait demo. I've only been sturgeon fishing once. I caught couple of nice catfish. I'm normally a fly fisherman so I didn't know what I was doing. Haha. I simply hooked a smallmouth bass which I caught onto a big hook. My rigs definitely needed to be tweaked. This time I feel like I am armed w better info. I'm gonna look fir more of your videos on sturgeon.
Keep up the good work samong. You're giving me inspiration to push to catch my first sturgeon. Thank you for the videos and tips. On my next off I'll be heading at north Saskatchewan river to catch my first sturgeon. Tight lines brother!
I just use a standard catfish rig sliding sinker to swivel and I use 100lb braid for main and leader I also keep my leaders short. Tho I fish Lakers not whites. I just use bait keeper hooks but I'm not restricted to only barbless.
Nice video Samong, we never tried that method before. We usually go 25-30 lbs main with 12-15 lbs for weight. That way it breaks off when we get fish on and we're not fighting the weight with the fish. 25lbs for the weight is pretty heavy and will not break easily I think. But the good thing is u get your weights back lol.
Thanks, Pao! 25lb breaks off pretty easily for us haha. Maybe we're just used to it, so it's a norm for us. We just grew using heavier equipment for sturgeon, so I haven't tried going with lighter set ups yet. I'll definitely have to give it all a try and see what works the best in the future!
Getting ready to go after some sturgeon in the Columbia near The Dalles, Oregon in a couple hours and stumbled into your video here before a quick stop at the tackle shop. At first (on the first rig) I thought you were making it pretty over complicated, but then I realized it was all about not loosing the bait, which is of course usually a lot more costs than a few inches of light line and the extra few knots. Great job and very helpful video!!! Sincere thanks to you and I liked and subbed!! :)
Great Video! I could talk about several other ways to rig for sturgeon but like you said from the very beginning this is how you do it and it works for you! Can't wait for the next video. I will definitely try the 2 ways you do to see if I have any luck on Saturday! Best of fishing to you and your family!
I look at catching big fish like I do in South Texas shark fishing. 1# is when I bank fish I use my spin reel, it throws farther. Penn Slammer 3, size 10500 and it's spooled with 560 yards of power pro, it's has max drag 66lbs on a Penn Prevail 12ft rod. I also run 100lb leader fluorocarbon. I have never been spooled. I have lost fish, but never been spooled. I've landed 10ft plus on lower Columbia bank fishing. Could write a article. Thank you
By the way, everything was well said and very understandable. I’m glad you’re able to make tutorial videos and outdoor videos, sharing with us all your experience!
Rather than whatever knot Samong Yang Outdoors used on the hook, learn how to snell a sturgeon hook properly. It is FAR stronger than any knot you'll use on a hook, and it will hook up more effectively on the fish using the geometry/physics of how it works rather than praying it works. Snelling a hook is almost ALWAYS the best way.
Do u usually fish up wanapum dam or lower? It's open for sturgeon September 15.. I was just wondering.. never fished ur videos inspire to go fish.. keep up the good work.
@@SamongOutdoors suggest tying the hook to the lower eye and the dropper weight to the top eye BUT add another swivel and a heavy split ring. This way it all spins and doesnt twist. You will retain strength and more when it all spins freely. Or use a 3 way swivel and have your bait on the bottom of the swivel and the dropper weight off the side so that when u fight the fish the weight of the fish goes straight down the swivel vs off the side of the 3 way to a 45 degree angle on those 3 way swivels... that amount of weight should go straight down vs L shaped off to the side. make sense?
Why rig up the slider so that you have the mono dangling? Why not put the weight straight on the snap and drop it to the bottom? If the fish are on the bottom feeding anyway, it can hang there and not snag up on things?
I've caught a few decent fish off of 40lb, but cousin's 11 footer is the biggest fish. We've caught many 7-9 footer with 40lb, and some of my family still do. I primarily run 50lb mono now.
@@SamongOutdoors right on man thank you do you have trouble with bait floating down river and your weight staying in place when you use weight sliders or dose it keep the bait down and close to the weight
