That’s why it’s my fave 8-bit micro, despite having a more powerful C64 and IBM around the house in the 80s. I mean, I never owned a Speccy till recently, but its unique video look and audio sound captivated me INSTANTLY when I saw game uploads on YT!!

Only the 128k Speccies had the AY Sound chip, the 48k ones had to make do with the crappy beeper sounds

That version of Nemesis: The Warlock.... it almost feels like a more depressed version, for lack of a better word. But just as good. This whole compilation is good. The AY has a nice sound to it.

I was playing some of these games when they came out. Now I am wating for my ZX Specturm Next to arrive next year, so I can play them again. I still have the tapes. You would set the game to load and go away for about 30 to 45 mins, and hope it went ok !!!!

You can actually get the AY sound chip on an expansion board for the 48ks. A surprising number of otherwise 48k games and demos will use it if it's available.

Zx Spectrum is the awesomeness. Its music chip is a mixture between all other 8 bit machines. I prefer the sound of speccy over amstrad, C64 or msx. Its sound is a bit more "fine" than others. I was grown up with speccy... coolness.

Robert Gijsen Didnt know that, I know they were all similar except the famous c64 sid. So in theory amstrad and speccy should sound the same? But I find amstrad have more squary basses so probably you've got reason :D programmers did it like that.

Alonso Gómez Amstrad CPC has possible lower tones because AY is clocked with 1Mhz instead of ~1.78 Mhz on Spectrum and MSX.

Chubby Gristle's Music is a great one! Clear and crisp sounds. And the vibratos are wonderful! Saboteur 2 is also a piece of art, as well as Mask 3, Thundercats, Slightly Magic and Blood Brothers (which isn't in this video).

+Brian O Shea Ah now, for mine (if they don't allow the full 11 minute odd Freebird, which they won't of course...) 1:37:03, Cos Glider Rider reasons! For preference I'd use the slightly lighter 'Flying theme' (no pun intended). Probably playing in the waiting room. Had I been alive of course I'd have mixed it like I used to do while playing the game. While the game was sucky, the music was sublime. When I'm being rolled into the big fire: 29:30, until 29:59 (Starglider end main theme, with the doors shutting and the fire starting on the slightly down beat 'bong' at the end) Not that I've ever given it much thought of course. Ahaha.

As far as technical ability go, LED storm is probably the best song ever written on the Spectrum, however F.I.R.E deserves a mention because for me it's the most memorable. I'm not sure why it wasn't included. The light corridor definitely gets a mention for the realistic sounding snare drum, very hard to achieve on the AY.

I just got done listening to like twenty hours of C64 music. This music sounds way better to me. I never grew up with either of these computers; I played Nintendo. I guess it's because these tunes are more elegant and more focused on melody, whereas the C64 tunes seem more focused on just jamming for a while. I'm not really into the latter, in or out of chiptune music.
