DIY sailboat refit of a 1971 Aquarius 21' swing keel "trailer sailor". In this episode I show you how I prepped and learned (and prepped and learned) the side of my boat for painting. I primed and painted the hull using roll and tip methods and spray painting. I used Total Boat Topside Primer and Wet Edge paint.

Great job! Thanks for saving another AQ21. So glad to build another 40 years of life into these great little boats. We've owned ours new since 1973 and sailed her all over the San Francisco Bay and Delta. Tuff little gals, very forgiving, and fun Lake sailing boats, too. Informative descriptions, good audio, and great incentive to see how they can be saved again with the your dedication and expertise. Looking forward to seeing your final result!

Hey so glad to see more content on these boats!! I bought one last fall and just started my refit and was having a hard time finding any info on them, so thanks for making these videos! Cant wait to see more and get more inspiration👍🏻👍🏻

In my experience different paint venders have different mixing proportions and quality, so if the paint didn’t ‘kick’ properly on time, it likely didn’t have the correct proportions of catalyst mixed properly …and/or the temperature of the substrate was an issue We usually painted the steel ship surfaces in the winter non-sea -going months, so we had to take into consideration the cold temperature of the metal both before the paint went on, and after, and used consideration of applying blown heat We used blue painters’ tape …and it just came down to how well it can be laid down, and how careful one paints Me personally, I would just clean up the detail work with small brushes and dithering, and see how it lasts in the water for a season…ship maintenance is a never-ending prospect, so you might as well not sweat the small stuff, as you’ll have plenty of reasons to re-paint in the future and perfect technique seaworthiness is the most important aspect, then fun, then pin striping 😆

Thank you. In this case, the paint is a one-part, so the ratio problem is not relevant. Although, I did thin with xylene. My philosophy is to shoot for an "A" and accept a "B". It worked well for me in school.

You need fine-line masking tape. Masking tape is for masking; electrical tape is for electrical.

That was my first thought, but I learned of others using electrical tape with good results. And, I was not able to find fine line masking tape. The electrical tape was the exact width I wanted. Plus, trial and learn is why I'm doing videos.

I think you need to spend more time prepping the fiberglass surface BEFORE priming . Watch boatworks today RU-vid channel . U will learn the pro way . Good luck

I appreciate the advice. However, I have watched many of Andy’s videos and that is what got me as far as I did. However, education and experience are not always closely related. I “knew” what to do, but recognizing the subtleties is difficult without the experience. Suffice it to say, my next paint job will go much smoother. And this learning curve I’m experiencing is exactly why I decided to make these videos. I decided after this paint job that I needed to share this message.
