Tip: use an axe when you are on stone tools, its does loads more damage and can get the hunters/speedrunners low with one hit Edit: learn to axe crit as well

The swords are actually better, they do 1 more damage than axes. They are on the new version but axes are used to disable shields and they did not use any shields.
