In this guitar lesson, you'll learn how to create two-note blues licks using the A minor pentatonic scale and the added blue note to craft endless riffs. These simple yet effective licks are a great way to spice up your blues playing, adding depth and character with minimal effort.
The A minor pentatonic scale is a five-note scale consisting of the notes A, C, D, E, and G. By adding the blue note, which is the Eb, you get the complete A blues scale: A, C, D, Eb, E, and G. Using just two notes at a time, you can create powerful and expressive licks that capture the essence of the blues.
Here's a basic pattern for the A minor pentatonic scale with the blue note:
E|-----------------------------------------5--8--|
B|-----------------------------------5--8--------|
G|---------------------------5--7--8-------------|
D|---------------------5--7----------------------|
A|-----------5--6--7----------------------------|
E|--5--8----------------------------------------|
To start, try this simple two-note lick combining the A (5th fret, E string) and C (8th fret, E string):
E|--5--8---------------------|
B|---------5-----------------|
G|---------------------------|
D|---------------------------|
A|---------------------------|
E|---------------------------|
In this lick, you're alternating between the root (A) and minor third (C), creating a classic blues sound. Now, let's add the blue note (Eb) to the mix:
l
E|--5--8---------------------|
B|---------5--8--5-----------|
G|---------------------------|
D|---------------------------|
A|---------------------------|
E|---------------------------|
By incorporating the blue note, you add tension and resolution to your licks, making them more interesting and expressive. Experiment with different combinations of these notes, and use techniques like bends, slides, hammer-ons, and pull-offs to add variety and emotion to your playing.
With these two-note licks, you can create countless riffs and solos, all rooted in the rich tradition of blues music. Practice these patterns, and soon you'll be able to craft your own unique blues licks with ease.
