I discuss and show the parts of a floor loom for hand weaving. This is the second in a series of videos for the beginner to learn how to weave on a floor loom. The loom is the most important piece of equipment for a weaver and something you should understand completely what the parts are and how they work. This tutorial demonstrates the parts and explains how they work.

I'm coming back to weaving after an absence of 15+ years. It's coming back, and your video is good as it is very thorough.

i'm in the same boat, Sue, and it's amazing how much I've forgotten, and how much I remember, at the same time. This is beautifully put together, slow and clear, makes me eager to get moving again.

So helpful! I took a class two years ago when I received our family heirloom loom. It's a 4 tread, counter balance designed by my great uncle. It's close to your Harrisville except it doesn't have actual pulleys. I planned on taking the class again but due to covid 19 the classes have been suspended. Your video has me right on track! I have my list of parts to get and then can start my projects!

Thank you for this video. I learned to weave on a 4 shaft table loom, and just purchased a used 22 inch Harrisville Design floor loom. Weaving on a table loom, I am not familiar with the brake release for adjusting the tension on the front cloth beam to advance the warp forward. Do you have a video that demonstrates how this is done? Also, should all shafts be absolutely equal and straight or can there be slight differences in height. I ran into a blog comment that on the 22 inch Harrisville, the distance from the top of the loom and bottom of shaft should be 8.5 inches? Is this correct/general rule of thumb. I'm becoming familiar with this loom, have my warp ready for sleying the reed. But will use the two wood sticks to maintain the cross and tie to the metal rod attached to the apron string. I don't dare use my small weak hands like you do to sley the reed. Thanks again for this informative video.

Your videos are amazing. Thank you so much. Do you think you will have time to discuss how to place the shafts back on the cables, as well as if there is any importance on the way the heddles are place (directional flow). I purchased used and the heddles seem to be in different directions. Also in order to get it home they removed the shafts now I don't know how to put them back on. A video would be so helpful. . Thank you

The one part of the loom that you did not focus on or talk about was the warp beam and how it is moved. ie: how do you wind the warp on the warp beam? I have just begun to try to put a warp (from back to front) on my floor loom and have discovered that the warp beam seems to be stuck. It won't unwind. It appears to be all wound up (metal spring is wound up) and I cannot get it to 'unwind'.

Dolores, How did you secure the metal ruler to shaft #1? Where can I find the marble-like magnetic balls? This is a great idea. I love all your tips and tricks; great time savers. I just purchased the exact Loom that you are demonstrating. Love your videos? I am a beginner Weaver. Especially love the walking treadling; I don’t understand it all yet, but with your help, I hope to become a pro! Thanks again, Dolores. Sherry

hi thanks for sharing this it makes much more sense to see all the pieces. when people say 4 shaft and 8 shaft they mean the harness used to hold the heddles? i am just beginning but as i understand theyre used to pickup different numbers of threads in the warp to create patterns? if i just want to weave plain cloth, i would only need 2 shafts right? i noticed theres alot of 4 shaft machines around that experienced weavers have outgrown and i thought maybe just because theyre into more complicated patterns
@DoloresJacobs
@DoloresJacobs 3 года назад
Yes, harnesses and shafts are the same thing and they do hold the heddles. 2 shafts are all you need for plain weave, one is up while the other is down. If you have 4 shafts, you should still thread all 4 shafts even for plain weave. You will be lifting 2 shafts while the other 2 are down.

Would you change from metal heddles to the soft heddles?
@DoloresJacobs
@DoloresJacobs Год назад
I have soft heddles on my other loom. I like the metal because they slide easily on the rails and the hole is open to thread. I like the soft heddles because I could dye each harness a different color, they are quite when weaving and lighter. It is a tough decision.

Thank you so much for your help. Where did't you order you Floor loom?
@DoloresJacobs
@DoloresJacobs 2 года назад
Hi, I ordered my loom directly from Harrisville Designs. It is what they call a kit. You need to assemble it yourself. This saves money and, I think, it helps to understand the parts of a loom and how it works.

How do you make a large blanket with a 36" width?
@DoloresJacobs
@DoloresJacobs 4 года назад
It is called Double Wide, Double Weave. You weave 2 pieces of cloth joined at the side. It is too complicated to explain here. Look for info on Double Weave.

I've been thinking of trying rug weaving on a loom. Would your loom work for that?
@DoloresJacobs
@DoloresJacobs 5 лет назад
Hi Ray, No, the Harrisville Looms are too light to weave rugs on.
