Setting up a 2 PC stream isn't actually that difficult.. if you know what you're doing. Here is the first bit in my masterclass on setting up a 2 PC setup.
EDIT: It's been about 9 months since I stopped using NDI and I had someone come into my Twitch chat to inform me there has been a MASSIVE change. You no longer need to have OBS installed on your gaming PC to run this. Thanks, @NerfedRogue, for helping me give people more accurate help. I'll be doing some serious tests of my own and releasing a full video on it soon.

I wish someone would do a tutorial series of start to finish listing their builds, to cable routing from PC to PC and PC to monitors, then to setup, to audio setup for a final result. Videos like this are all over RU-vid, but they all lack the necessary details.
@StevenTheGeek
@StevenTheGeek 4 года назад
Because cable routing is either a non event or a nightmare depending on how you go. Everybodies setup will be different depending on Monitors, Capture cards and mixers used.
@DG-america
@DG-america 4 года назад
@@StevenTheGeek A 2 pc setup is going to be set up the same for the most part. Monitors are monitors. Capture cards are either pcie or inline. How is it all wired together is what I want a tutorial on. What's it matter whether they use a GoXLR, or a usb mixer? It may wire slightly different, but it still has to be on one of the PC, and connected to the other one somehow too. Choice of peripherals doesnt matter.
@StevenTheGeek
@StevenTheGeek 4 года назад
Not really, here are 3. I use Turing nvenc and a lightweight overlay. This means my stream PC is 85% idle. So I have my GoXLR, discord, RU-vid etc on my stream pc and my game pc has nothing installed except games. I literally have 4 wires: mic to goxlr, GoXLR to streamPC usb, game pc hdmi to capture card in (in stream pc), capture card out to gaming Monitor. Simple but my stream PC has to be always on. This is not how most 2 PCs are setup, most put the GoXLR on the main pc so they can power down the stream Pc when not recording or streaming. They have to link the GoXLR audio out to streamPC sound card audio in. Harris’s is more complicated because he can stream an overlay to twitch while also capturing clean gaming direct on his gaming PC without overlay and Mic. So he has 2 GoXLRs (1 to each pc), wiring to join them together. So you see already we have 3 sets of wiring. I just see the video being 30- minutes long, but people seem to get bored after 10.

Quick note about NDI, you don't need to run OBS on the gaming PC. Newtek has a tools suite that comes with NDI Scan Converter that sends over your monitor/audio from your gaming PC to your streaming PC. It has a low latency mode that is next to instant (same latency as modern capture cards). If quality and delay were your only concerns when looking into NDI as a transfer method, I'd highly recommend you look into it without running it using 2 instances of OBS like this tutorial suggests.

NDI woop woop! I love the flexibility NDI gives (especially the fact you can use an old desktop or laptop to run it). You can run everything in OBS on the gaming PC and just NDI it over to the 2nd PC for encoding (simplest, easiest, but maybe not the most efficient but still helps a lot) or just use scan converter as other people are pointing out to send everything on screen over to the 2nd PC without OBS being open on the main PC. This method is great too, but routing alerts audio and such back to the main PC makes it less simple, but improves gaming performance. Tradeoffs. My favorite function I can do with NDI now? NDI-ing my phone camera into the stream. Can use it within wifi range as a fun little mobile cam, or just as a secondary/tertiary camera (and mic). NDI ftw!

Great video as always. Important to point out with NDI is that you can compensate for the delay by using a "Render Delay" Filter on your camera and offsetting your Audio Input Capture in Advanced Audio Properties. The Render Delay Filter will only allow you to delay up to 500ms but you can add more than one to your source/scene.

@AlphaGaming Great tutorial - but unfortunately in 2020, it doesn't quite apply to Elgato's most recent Elgato 4060s+ capture card device. Unlike the 460 Pro mk.2, the 4k60s+ does NOT allow for 1440p/144hz passthrough, meaning the signal never gets sent and the main gaming PC has this weird 60hz lock rather than the 144+hz it should be running at. Do you have any more recent videos that cover this already?

@TheDropshotPodcast

Harris I'm a huge fan, but I use NDI and have none of the issues you've mentioned. For the asynchronous audio-to-video, all you have to do is apply a simple NDI filter to your desktop audio and mic audio from your gaming PC, and they will then be synced up perfectly. Additionally, NDI is made to be used with an Ethernet switch - a 1 gigabit switch is sufficient, and costs around 15 bucks. I use a 240hz gaming monitor, and only the most expensive capture cards are capable of this passthrough; with NDI, this isn't an issue at all. Thus for me, it was either a 15 dollar switch or a couple hundred dollar capture card. My video quality also does not suffer (which is to say, is no worse) compared to using a capture card, making that decision a no-brainer. As long as your internet is of good quality (which it needs to be if you're streaming regardless of your setup), NDI has no downsides whatsoever if configured properly.
@KRysGamingYT
@KRysGamingYT 5 лет назад
Very much this. Most people don't realize the choppiness and loss of quality they experience with NDI is either due to one or both of the computers not being capable of a gigabit connection and or not having a gigabit switch or router. Most of the cheap older routers and switches are only 100Mbps bandwidth and 720 60fps over the network EASILY breaks that peaking around 200 Mbps for really intense scenes or fast transitions.

The NDI one with the reaction thing is only if youre running your audio stuff from the streaming PC (Mic / webcam/ overlay etc) if you however set all this up on the Gaming PC you could run the whole schabang with a "mimiced" one PC settup with the streaming PC as a render rig. In that way, All signals have equal delay, of course you take a quality hit on those additional sources quality but its an option.
@KRysGamingYT
@KRysGamingYT 5 лет назад
Can always add delays to the sources that need them too. I do not use ndi for audio and instead use my goxlr for audio and a webcam. Both of those needed a 250ms offset delay to the ndi to be in sync.

I use a 1440p 144hz monitor, cloned to an Avermedia Live Gamer 4k capture card, and I use Voicemeeter Banana to send the desktop audio and microphone over the capture card on the streaming pc. I disagree with the final statement. I have found it to be the most efficienct in the two PC setup, as I currently use it for my 1440p 144hz capture, and the quality is superb! The other two add a fair bit of load on the gaming PC, and can often show up resulting in frame loss and drops. However, I do use NDI for audio transfer and it is an amazing feeling to not use larger interfaces for my audio setup!

@@RainyCreates NDI basically clones the preview shown on the Main PCs OBS over the network onto the streaming PCs, though whatever issue that presents itself on the main Preview will show over in the streaming PCs as well. @KRysGamingYT

Glad you brought that up. To clarify for people, using the NDI Tools (Scan Converter, specifically) will capture your display and send it over the network. It acts the exact same way as mirroring to a capture card. The pro is less resources used. The con is that display is always captured no matter what. I prefer to use the OBS NDI plugin because you can have greater control of what is being sent over NDI through your scenes at the cost of slightly more system resources. Now when I alt tab, stream doesn't have to see all my open windows :P

Thank god for this video. I just recently started using an older PC as an OBS machine and had a heck of a time getting it together. I would still love to see an actual in depth look at how this functions in OBS. For example, right now, I'm doing the first part, where I mirror my monitor. However, It's a 1440p monitor (using the HD60 PRO) so I can only play games at 1080p and I take a significant FPS hit (from 250 in Rocket League to something like 80). And on the OBS machine, I would kind of like the option of closing out of a game without my entire desktop being on display. I'm not entirely sure this works in any world, but it would be nice. Thanks for the killer content!

Does anyone know if the updated video has been made? I was hoping for some help on determining what the best set-up is for gaming on a 240Hz monitor to a streaming PC outputing 60fps. Thx!

Hey Harris, you problem don't remember me, but I'm post_pwnd on Twitch. I asked you a question a week or so ago about using the Blue Yeti on a 2 PC setup. So, I finally built my new gaming PC, and have turned my previous rig into my dedicated streaming PC. Here's the problem, I game at 1440p 144hz. I recently purchased an Elgato HD60 Pro because I honestly had no idea that I couldn't clone the display and the elgato and sent a different resolution to both... SO, now I'm either stuck using a non native resolution on my 900$ monitor, or using an alternative method of getting my gaming PC's screen, to my streaming PC. My question is, is your gaming PC's refresh rate dependent on your capture cards max capture frequency (Hz)? For instance, if I did have a 1080p monitor, and an Elgato HD60 Pro, using them as cloned in Windows, would my monitors refresh rate be limited to 60Hz because that's what the card uses?

Google is ur friend man, there are ways to bypass that so u dont get the "laggy image quality" when ur streaming pc gets the picture from ur gaming pc. u can play on a 1440p 144hz and get the clone to output still 60hz 1080p. doesnt matter.

@@TakenEnt What I'm asking is, if I'm cloning displays, and my monitor is 1440p 144hz, would it run at 1440p 144hz even if the capture card was only capable of 1440p 120hz. Or would the capture card force the monitor to run at 120hz.
@TakenEnt
@TakenEnt 5 лет назад
@@badnewsbruner from what i know is that the clone will be 1080p 60 hz and not 1440p ur monitor and how u game will stay exactly the same but the output to ur streaming pc will be 1080p 60hz. but i could be wrong. since i have 1080p 144hz on my monitor and the capture card doesnt support it but the work around allowed me to be able to stay on 144hz on my gaming pc and the output is 1080p 60hz.

hello Harris! there's a newer method of capturing the display of the gaming pc without even opening obs on the gaming PC over ndi, its using the NDI scan converter, found within the NDI TOOLS 3.8 which is the latest version so far, it removes the load of having OBS open on the Gaming PC all together. i don't know if you haven't seen it around yet, but its very uncommon i don't see anyone else doing.

I have always used a 2X PC set up, until recently. My gaming PC is a beast and my streaming PC was a 2017 27” iMac running Windows bootcamp. With OBS streaming, my CPU usage would shoot up to about 55-60%. I recently plugged everything into my gaming PC and have moved to a 1x PC set up. My gaming PC has a webcam, mic, capture card (for console only) and dual 144 hz monitors. Also cranked up the graphics to work seamlessly with my 144hz GSYNC monitors. This was best decision I have ever made. Even with Aqibmir’s animated scenes, stingers, mic, webcam, stream deck, dual 144hz monitors, streaming w/ OBS studio and graphics cranked, my CPU usage is only at 1.5%. I built a monster. The rig I am using is a i9 9900k With 32G of ram and a RTX 2080TI. I’ll never go back to a 2x PC set up. Although, I agree with Harris’ statement about splitting the resources. But with the type of rig I have built, I just don’t need a streaming PC, as my gaming rig handles everything flawlessly and uses less than 2% of my CPU. Thank you Harris for all that you have taught me the past few months. You have taken me from a laggy stream, using the Xbox One X’s Twitch app with the wrong bitrate and my Xbox headset, back to PC gaming and a quality stream so again thank you. You’re the man.

How much did you spend on the build if you don’t mind me asking
@UncalmChaos
@UncalmChaos 5 лет назад
GrandMasterLynx Around $2,500. But I was able to justify it because now I won’t need a 2nd PC. I was able to completely delete the Windows partition on my iMac. It’s back to 100% Mac OS X which is used for my music recording in Logic X and to display my chat and creator dashboard on twitch.com.

That price includes all components, case and shipping of components. I spent about 2,200 on all components, case, liquid cooling and shipping. Then about $150 for some software I needed.

JackVR You have a haas PC. I used pcpartspicker.com and just found what I wanted, for the cheapest price I could get. Had each component shipped individually. I use my PC for more than just streaming though so the components I bought are tailored to my personal needs. A 1x PC set up just works better for me. Although, I do agree if you have a dedicated, capable streaming PC, I would totally go for a 2X PC set up. But I needed a new gaming PC anyway. My old one was so old that it couldn’t run any modern games at 1080/60 and it was time. Would love to check out your stream.

JackVR JackVR This is very true. I am new to streaming and only recently affiliated. However, I am not new to PC building, components and troubleshooting. Of course the cost are different. A 2070 is like $600-$700 less than a 2080 TI and AMD chipset is $150 less than the Intel i9 9900k. The difference of those 2 components alone are $750-$850. Which is enough to build a whole 2nd PC. Ram is pretty cheap these days so getting 32 over 16 wasn’t really anything major. I too, have a crystal clear stream. Difference is, I don’t have to pass my audio/video to another PC via a capture card or NDI plugin. You’re 100% correct, you definitely saved money on some of the components. Enough to build a whole 2nd PC. I chose to just pick the components tailored to my personal needs. Even after I built it, I used a 2x PC set up for awhile. Then I just moved it all to 1x PC and have had no issues. Not sure where the point of failure is? I am able to power everything including stuff I do off stream with only 1x PC. I don’t have to use a capture card or need extra cables unless I’m playing on console. I was not looking to save money by using different components, those are the components I wanted. I’m aware I could have saved money in certain areas much like you did. Everyone builds PCs around their personal needs. Which is why the market is flooded with components. I love talking tech with you guys.

Just a quick thing, what was gained by adding OBS on the gaming pc for NDI? Every streamer that mentions NDI always mentions OBS on the gaming PC but NewTek has always had its own system tray Scan Converter app that gave me nearly no latency. It uses about 4% CPU and 24mb RAM. Then you would just use the obs NDI plugin on the stream PC.

Not sure if you will see this or not considering the age of the video but. We run a co op stream, 3 pc setup , 2 gaming pc and 1 streaming pc. Currently running NDI for the 2 gaming pc-> streaming pc. Would we need 2 capture cards or is there such a thing as a dual capture card that i can install in the streaming pc to get both of us?

I've been running a dual PC streaming setup for quite a while now, first of all there is another method of streaming without a capture card and not using NDI which is a bit more difficult to setup but I found it yields better quality AND performance than NDI. Also, I'm using the AVerMedia Live Gamer HD 2 capture card which is capped at 1080p even for pass-through and for my games I have a 31.5" 1440p monitor, the monitor does run in windows and runs all games at it's native 1440p resolution, you can configure it in NVIDIA-CP so that it will "downscale" the output for the capture card, so basically it receives a 1080p signal which was downscaled from 1440p, definitely not the best/most elegant solution AND if you're streaming just scripting or text, will be awful, however in games it looks as good as a straight 1080p signal.

This video was great, we could use a updated version and also i would like to add that Apex Legends is a pretty intensive game to stream, not even using nvenc offloads the issues entirely. The only solution to sucessfully play Apex at 144 fps or more and stream without losing quality and/or frame it is with 2 pcs, even with a 2080 its possible to feel the difference in how fluid the game is, and to be honest, to reach Apex Predator any frame counts. One more thing: Mirilis Action have a VERY effective engine that support multi gpu, to be honest it does have MUCH more quality and performance than OBS but lacks streaming features, like overlay and scene customization. Maybe would be cool to check it out!

what about the sound? Would stream be able to hear you and the game if everything is plug into your gaming pc or would you have to have it plugged into your streaming pc? Cause honestly I used to stream from my laptop from my ps4 and had to use two different types of headphones... I really don't want to go back to doing that lol

Harris, Hey Bud..I have been using NDI for a year now religiously and I believe in your vid, you told everyone they need to open OBS on their gaming PC as well. This is in correct for myself, all I need to do on my Gaming PC is open NDI and you are good to go, and then OBS Streamlabs on my streaming PC that’s it. I have NDI installed on my steaming PC as well, but have never had to actually open the program on there. just open Streamlabs OBS and go!!! Not sure about delay, but it seem to be the normal delay on stream that lags 10-20 second behind anyway when watching. Now I have never used wired connection with Caoture card, but will be getting too of the line Labtop here in a week or so, and plan on trying this method, but being it will have a 3070 Nvidia in there, this will actually be my capture card correct? Or do I need a separate capture card for the laptop too. I am using ten Samsung 49” G9 Monitor and NDI handles it flawlessly with my other PC using a 980TI

You don't need to run OBS as an NDI output on your gaming PC. You can use the ndi scan converter to output to the network and OBS will pick it up on the stream PC and not run OBS on the gaming machine at all.

How would you recommend handling when your audio is not being sent over HDMI? I have seem to run into the issue that when I use option 1 I have no audio because my audio device is not set as my HD60X, it's an audio interface, but if I switch audio devices to the HD60X I lose the ability to listen on my gaming PC. Is there a way to aggregate audio and video outputs?

2 cables coming out of your GPU, one goes into the capture card of the streaming PC and one goes to your gaming PC? do you mean one hdmi goes to the monitor of the PC in which you are playing your game on and the other going to your stream pc with the capture card? Other wise it would be a 3 PC setup or im just plugging in a random gpu with 2 hdmi's sticking out of it...
