The first part of this video shows me making a spiral chip n dip bowl in two pieces. I alter the rim of the big bowl and attach it to the small dip bowl.
The next part of the video, I show you how I glazed it including every step you need to make it yourself ☺️
BONUS clip at the end shows an additional and fabulous glaze combination which is the same exact combo as the chip n dip bowl, except for one specific glaze. Amazing to see the difference between the two combinations and how the glazes interact with each other!
Clay used:
-Laguna bmix
🔥 fired to cone 6 using a slow cool schedule
Glaze combination on chip n dip bowl:
ALL AMACO GLAZES:
2x blue midnight
2x blue rutile
1x seaweed
1x Vert luster
1x heavy coat light flux (by Mayco)
Glaze combination for the fruit bowl with handles:
2x blue midnight
2x blue rutile
1x seaweed
1x lustrous jade
1x heavy coat light flux (by Mayco)
Enjoy ❤️

Thanks so much for sharing this! Two questions: 1. Did you trim the bottoms of the bowls first? 2. If so - How did you keep the rims wet enough to do this? Thanks!!
@thehappyhomesteadnh
@thehappyhomesteadnh 7 месяцев назад
Great questions!! Yes I trimmed the bottom first, then I cut a piece of plastic (Saran wrap works too) to cover the rim and top portion. Sometimes I will mist it with a spray bottle first if it’s getting too dry and then wrap the rim and sides with plastic. The rim tends to dry quicker than the bottom. If I can’t get to the piece for a few days, I’ll put the entire bowl on a ware board, with the rim wrapped in plastic and then cover the whole thing up tight with another piece of plastic. Hope this helps!!
@thehappyhomesteadnh
@thehappyhomesteadnh 7 месяцев назад
Also when you wrap the rim and sides, I leave the top open because the bottom tends to be more wet - this will help air get to the bottom to dry but not the rim/sides.

I don’t know if you’ll actually get this message, but in the end you show two bowls, can you please tell me how you made those amazing amazing handles
@thehappyhomesteadnh
@thehappyhomesteadnh 9 месяцев назад
Aw thank you! Kind of hard to explain but a great idea for a demo video! Basically I cut a random rectangle out of a slab - like a little smaller than a standard handle in length. Then I trace that onto another slab so I have 2 of the same size handles. To get the shape, I hold both ends of rectangle handle, and twist those ends in a forward motion, which creates the curve. That’s it! Then I attach them to the bowl. I cut out a little circle of the bowl on both sides too but you don’t have to. Hope this helps!!

I have to tell you, when I saw your gallon size jug of Blue Rutile and then the 4oz of flux I literally laughed out loud! Also, I thought the Amaco gallons were dipping glazes!! What the heck?!? I can not believe I didn’t know that they are brush on. You just taught me a very expensive lesson. As in THATS going to cost me because why the heck am I buying a pint or two at a time! Love it!! I don’t have Vert Lustre unfortunately because I do prefer that one but I will be trying this glaze combo on a bowl for sure. I’m firing my kiln tomorrow. Can’t wait to see what comes out. I had to put several things on stilts which always worries me soo much! Awesome video! I don’t know if I would be able to do this with a handbuilt bowl since you have to let it dry so much to take it out of or off the mold but I’ll totally give it a try!

@@micheledickey4066 awww lol THANK YOU for all of your info and tips and tricks! I appreciate it so much. Too funny 😂 yes I buy gallons of the glazes I use a lot and just keep refilling the pint - we learn something new everyday! I wish they sold flux in gallons or a pint would be nice 😂

we have big gallons of gaze in our classroom. that need to be mixed for 2 minutes. did you stir/shake/or mix yours? (in the smaller bottles. if so, for how long?
@thehappyhomesteadnh
@thehappyhomesteadnh 6 месяцев назад
That makes sense to mix for 2 minutes if it’s a gallon of glaze versus a pint. I primarily use pints of brush on glazes that I’ll shake for like 10 seconds if it’s fairly new. Also, I usually open the pint first to see if the glaze has dried out some or there are chunks etc. the longer an opened pint sits on my shelf without use, the more it needs to be mixed usually. So for those, I’ll stir vigorously until the consistency is that of milk or cream. Some glazes are by nature more milky than creamy..you get to know your glazes after a while. Long answer 😆 general rule of thumb is to have your glaze smooth and creamy. The pints don’t need to be stirred or shaken up for more than like 10-15 seconds. Crystal glazes are a little different! Hope this helps!

I think you are asking if you can use a glaze that doesn’t run? If so, you would want to use a stable glaze and most likely one glaze (no layers of different and multiple glazes). Just one color to keep it simple 😉
