I'll be honest, I'm not much of a cyclist at 60 years old but I find Gary's videos inspiring. After not having been on a bike for 40 years I bought an Ebike which I love. I was lucky and found a road bike in a dumpster that was actually pretty high end (shimano ultegra, st-6501 brifters, 9 speed, aluminum frame). Had 2 bike shops check it for damage and after getting the ok I spent $100 on new cables, grip tape, tubes. Got a great deal on tires (Vittoria Zaffiro Pro 2 for $20) and a Selle San Marco Concor saddle for $10. New peddles as well. It was alot of fun repairing the broken shifter, cleaning and lubing everything. I can honestly say Gary's videos were an inspiration. I've riden the bike a few times for short distandes but I'm just not physically able to use it to its full potential unfortunately. Was still a fun project.

How on earth is this practical? I would be too annoyed to dismount every other hill to change gear. And to only have two gears when you have a whole derailleur is just missed potential in my opinion. Adding a simple friction shifter, it doesn't even have to be on the handlebar, wouldn't make the build much more complicated.
@garysprojects
@garysprojects 5 месяцев назад
@hobbybaschtler7896 I guess it’s something you don’t switch too much. Maybe if you’re in a rush for work you set it to the high gear and on your way home you set it on low. Think of it as just using an old rd as a tensioner , with the option of switching one gear

Once again a great video. Always enjoying your creative builds and your chilled ways to present them. 💖💖💖 Just about the split crown race: those are kinda common on sealed headsets because you don't need a smooth surface all the way around the crown race for the balls to role like you would on "open" ball-bearings. Sealed bearings already have that surface inside them. And it's heck easier to install and uninstall after all.
@garysprojects
@garysprojects 3 месяца назад
Thank you I appreciate that ! That’s great to know about the crown race !! I’ll make sure I use slotted ones for all sealed bearings! Will save me a lot of hassle 😂
@flinkerfink

@@garysprojects ahahaa, those hundreds of hours lost in my basement... i feel you! you can even cut them yourself if they're not slotted at factory. works like a charm and no tools needed except for a screwdriver or something to "open up" the crown race while mounting it on the fork.

I use derailleurs as chain tensioners on my single speeders and have used that cable hack for many years now and it always works great especially for fine tuning the chain noise. Currently building up an old Jamis frame (reynolds 520 steel) to be my one bike to do everything ..... Road / Round Town / Commute / Gravel. Looking forward to working my way thru your older videos. keep up the great work.

Surly used to make a Dingle fixed cog that paired with two chainrings would give a on road/ off road gear. No derailleur, just loosen the wheel and switch and off you go. Or use a modern Sturmey Archer internal gear hub with disc brake mounts.
@garysprojects
@garysprojects 4 месяца назад
How does it keep chain tension ?
@davidbee9563
@davidbee9563 4 месяца назад
@@garysprojects You would combine a small front ring with the larger rear cog and the larger from ring with the smaller rear cog. So there is only smsll difference in chain length to adjust. Maybe a 36/18 with a 42/14? I have not used one myself but there is likely info on the website about what works.

nice build, never seen a 2speed bike, a twinspeed maybe? couplespeed? (commenting on Valentine's day lol) also what about a frame lever to go from one to the other instead of doing it manually? maybe the lever could go on the bar ends to stay slick

Connect your Dingle speed to a front derailleur MTB shifter. Can use 2 speed and ignore the trim, or have 3 speed in the back (fast, cruise, and hill options)

Lush build as always. Allow me to share my experience with shims for cranks: I use an LX MTB triple crank as a 1X on my commuter, and had to shim them for the same reasons you showed in your video. The type of shim I found useful, were the ones you use on doors, to lift them from the ground at the hinges (de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitschenring). Unfortunately i couldnt find an english translation, but the wiki pakes has a picture which should hopefully help. Regarding the crown race, while i personally never did it, as long as you use cartridge type headset bearings you can use those split crown races, and even cut a slit in them yourself (I've seen Spindatt do it to great success). Makes installation and removal muuuuuch easier. Obvs won't work with caged/ball bearings 😉

Nice build as always Gary. Wondering how they hid the seams so well between the steel and carbon? I have a Trek 8300 where the main tubes are carbon but the rest aluminum. The aluminum was left raw.

My tip for this build , the shifting with the set screw is a bit to much in my mind , you get pretty cheap from SunRace or Sturmy Archer a bar end shifter were the front shifter for this aplication will work fine . Have fun !

Thank you my dude ! Ya they work pretty well I think. The levers are short pull which work with cantibrakes. I think they are little more bulky than the vintage ones but not too bad 👍

Love the manual two speed setup. Did you have any chainwrap issues with the 13t? I've always had skipping under load issues with low tooth cogs and derailleurs as as a tensioner
@garysprojects

No issues at the moment ! I didn’t need to adjust the chain either. Sometimes if you get slippage it could be the chain is too long or a worn cog. Thank you my dude !

Ive always pondered a 1cog rear with a 2 cog crankset. Thoughts? For me that would mean a 50/17 cog which is my favourite and then a 34/17 or so for the hills

Yes I think that would work ! You may still have to run a rear derailleur I think , and maybe a front one too

Ya it’s been working well with no scratches! Obviously different for every bike but the flex depends on the frame you have and how flexiable it will be. I think this bike having steel joints & rear triangle helps!

How did the weight feel compared to MTBs, and what you expected? Also, how did the different gearing end up working out? Was it enough of a spread in ratio to tell the difference?
@garysprojects
@garysprojects 5 месяцев назад
Weight feels noticeably lighter when riding and compared to my other mtbs , fun to whip around on. The gearing is actually a massive difference for myself haha it means being able to go up hills on one and not on the other 😂 maybe I need to get more fit. I. Mostly ride the easier gear in the vid. I think it would probably be nice to have 17-18 and a 14-15 I think if I get more fit the ratio I have on the bike will be fine.
