I have a Yamaha 200 hp 2 stroke. If you run one in a barrel of water....Watch how dirty that water gets! They do put out some oil.

On the canals of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, two stroke engines have been banned since 2017.

We all know these engines got phased out just cause companies were losing money... Why would they leave an engine we can fix ourselves on the market? Heck no!!

Not exactly banned you can probably get into contact with someone in Japan if you really want one brand new importation won’t really care one or two will not hurt the system

As long as parts are available I’ll keep my 4 -2 stroke engines. Never left me stranded once.

But all the major bike makers are going strong back into 2T dirt bikes, don’t forget chainsaws, trimmers, etc, etc, etc. Bullsh1t politics at its finest.

We have a Yamaha 90A on the back of our boat. With 79-odd hours on the thing, I suspect that we'll be using it - and "raising eyebrows" - for many years yet. ;) I've had people tell me "Mate, get rid of it and get a 4 stroke!" The change-over price is eye-watering...and buys a LOT of fuel. No thanks.

Pretty sure it's 2 stroke carbies that are banned. New Evinrude direct injection 2 strokes are exempt as they fall into a different emmisions category

2 stroke vs 4 stroke. 2 stroke, costs far less, 1/3 more power and 1/3 less weight than the equivalent hp four stroke. which means, in the real world,adding the extra weight on menas i have to go from a 40hp 2 stroke to a 60 hp four stroke to get the same power for weight ratio. Sure four stroke are more economical, because they use 4 strokes per cycle to the two stroke 2, meaning only has half the power per cycle. 4 strokes are quieter and less oil burnt,also save having to buy 2 stroke oil, but also way more parts and a lot more maintenance is needed. There is a solid reason why trailbikes are going back enmass to 2 stroke tech,its far more powerful for same size engine. Difference in cost between a 90hp mercury 2 stroke @ $11k nzd for a 115hp four stoke @ $20k nzd that $9000 difference buys a heck of a lot of fuel.

This only recently happened in Australia? In Norway, sale of 2 stroke outboards with carburetors have been banned since 2006. The engines on the used market are getting old.

Why are they banning stuff. This is everyone’s country not the political offices country to tell us what we can have and not have. All of my dirtbikes atvs, lawn equipment is all 2 cycle literally my lawnmower is a 2 cycle lawn boy. You can ban 2 strokes all you want I’ll still be using them until the day that I die. If parts are available then I’ll just rebuild the machine

So you’re telling me that if I buy a brand new Yamaha 250 hp 2-stroke for my boat, have it shipped here to the U.S., I could get in serious trouble? Wow. Such a shame. Yamaha’s 2-stroke outboards are damn near bulletproof. They still sell brand new ones to countries without emission regulations.

Many small boats can't take the weight of a small 4T and only work well with 2t e.g. my 3,8m Rubber duckky goes great with a 2T 30HP but with a 4T would be terrible. But also my RIB could take twin 60 2T but not 2x4T - They should limit the size of 2T to 90HP and 4T bigger (the weight diff is not so bad at larger sizes).

Evinrude still makes 2 strokes but, have less emissions than some 4 strokes because it has a gasoline direct injection system called E-Tec. The sell and importation bans only applies to carbureted 2 strokes.

Looks like I'll never buy a new engine ever again... and if I have to I'll stick with Evinrude two-stroke forever

wish the 2015 F60 Yamaha 4 stroke EFI outboard did not break down this Christmas trip i got to wait to get some to look at it on the 16th as it's in a marina they back in the shop, what a let down for the Yamaha only done 114hrs to, so long live my 1982 115hp 2 stroke Evinrude motor she always been good to me.

Yamaha's are getting more popular in California. My son just replace a troublesome new Merc with a new four stroke 70 Yamaha. Quieter, faster, quicker holeshot, MUCH better fuel economy AND it's not in the shop all the time. He liked it so much he dumped the Merc kicker too. Heaven on water!

There are benefits to 2 cycle motors less moving parts less weight more top end speed but cost of oil on top of fuel would be a disadvantage....2 cycle doesn't pollute any more than a 4 stroke they just run differently

In NLD 2 Strokes are also on the deathlist in some waters. But 4 strokes cost way more in maintenance. I like the smell of Castrol A747 oil.

Instead of banning 2 strokes... you should make performance criteria. Guess what the last time that was done magically Evinrude started making 2 strokes that could meet emissions AMAZING! The fact is that one of the most efficient and clean engine designs for upcoming vehicles is a 2 stroke from acates power, and it doesn't burn oil and and barely has any emissions due to the extreme expansion ratio allowed by the opposed piston design.

I dont get it why they phase out 2 strokes…. They are more durable and more simple to work on and they weigt so much less than a 4 stroke…

This sucks for me because I can’t put anything bigger than 6hp 4 stroke on my 12 footer without riding vertical in the water... I love 2 stroke because it’s so much lighter, more power and the biggest selling feature is how easy a 2 stroke is to repair.

Just bought a second hand tinny with a 2016 Yamaha 20hp 2-stroke... Couldnt have paid for it quicker as I wanted that 2 stroke over any 4 stroke available... If people drive DPF deleted cars without worry, a little 2 stroke won't do much.

Why? Why not Evinrude 2 strokes? They create less pollution than any other outboard... They're so good, they pass both US' CARB and EU emission standards...

So say if I bought a 1996 20hp Yamaha Parts will still be made for it for many years to come? So if I keep buying parts for it I can then keep it on the water for many more years

If you like your fish ide say be all for banning the two stroke with the mixture compared to four strokes however trail bikes made the switch also from two to four tho a different ball game the four stroke seems to have more grunt and more quiet

The man is a salesman. He knows squat. There are no old classic 2 strokes being built anymore, The new 2 strokes are cleaner than the new 4 strokes and there is no ban on them. Get it right.

No one minds 4 strokes, if they were as cheap as 2 stroke motors we all could have one. Lower the dam prices.

Dealers love this. Four strokes are most costly and complex to work on. That means you have to take them to the dealer to get repaired. I have two stroke dirt bikes. I love them.

Evinrude's new E-TEC 2 stroke line up is something Yamaha need to take seriously. Evinrudes E-Tecs are cleaner, more fuel efficent than any 4 stroke in the market, and they produce a superior performance. So, yes, Yamaha must bring soon something in this game, a new line up fuel direct injection two stroke motors. I'm Yamaha man myself, but i'm worried that they don't keep up with competetors concentrating only to 4 strokes.

4 cycle, the only way to go.

Two stroke are crap for general purpose boating. Had loads of them over the years, new and old and they've all been a pain the backside. Constantly breaking down and needing servicing, hard to start and dirty too. In contrast all the four strokes I've had have been a dream. Never broken down ever, always start first time, better fuel efficiency and being quieter and cleaner is just an added bonus. The only thing I'd personally use a two stroke outboard for is as an anchor. And even then I'm sure it'd fail. Adios two strokes, can't say it's been good knowing you. PS: As far as I'm aware most large shipping now run on electric engines powered by generators so comparing a cruise ships engine pollution to a small outboard doesn't even make sense.

I'm so glad I don't live in such a screwed up place like Australia...
