that surveyor is an absolute legend, he deserves all the good reviews he got for sure!!

We found our Pearson-33 in Indiantown Oct-2010. We went there to look at a steel hull, disheartened by the holes in it and the yard man told us about our boat. It had Toilet (not connected), oven (not hung or connected), anchor (no rode), sink (laid in the hole not connected) and we got it for 10-grand. We motored West through the cannel, turned and came North in the ICW and arrived in our pre-rented slip in Pinellas County in five days. We only did 5.25 knots average and 6-hours a day but the boat did fine. Fortunately, I was a rigger in the Army, A master plumber for a living, taught electronic engineering for five years and earned my FCC and GROL for the VHF radio. I built the boat to make it cushy for her (girls need to NEST), and moved into it in St Petersburg March-2011. We have been living on our boat now for six years and we love it. We go out cruising with our yacht club group occasionally (Bo ca-Ciega-Yacht-Club).When you come to St Petersburg, beware, only two of several slips we were in have issues. Almost every marina we have been in has provided what they say they will. The remarkable ones are the ones that are very bad places to live or visit. In our experience Twin Dolphin is number one to stay away from. Second would be across the river at Regatta Point. All others in the Tampa Bay area have been wonderful. One last thing, 33-feet is big. a few more may be okay, but you pay for it, it's not that much more helpful and there are some places you can't go if your much bigger than 37-feet. Go smaller if you can. Learn what you need then step up later. Also, a 44-foot mast is a long way up. And hang on to the ropes when you go through the locks. When they open, your boat tries to go thru that little slot so HANG-ON. Look us up when you get here. Mary is a nurse.

After watching your first video I had to watch the second. I was getting ready for an exciting binge watching experience but lo and behold, only TWO VIDEOS???!!!!! Ha ha. Oh well. For me is not "Abandon comfort", from my point of view it would be "Light travel", where basically it is to leave behind everything that is superfluous and to value what you have and where the ingenuity is one more crewman. I noticed in the phone message from the British seller that he mentioned sailing with you to St. Petersburg. I've had my boat in St. Pete since October and I believe you two will love it here. I've lived all over Florida and like this area best. I am a friend of the Sailing Uma couple (Dan and Erika) and I donated some electric vehicle components (speed controller and main relay) to the Uma project. They are really good people who are on the right track......seems you two are also. Good luck to you both.

We literally had this exact survey where so much was found early on...the owner was furious and called the surveyor a fraud...it was a lot to go through but we learned a lot and were so glad for our amazing surveyor for being honest with us and letting us cut the survey short. It pays to get a good surveyor! Our boat is still out there somewhere!

Good on y'all with your first Blue-water sailing vessel. Respect her, take care in the re-fitting or fitment of her, learn everything you are able concerning the maintenance and care of her, then go beyond that and learn more... She will never let you down in the worst of sea's, even very confused sea states as long as you don't ask more of her than she was designed for, she will bring you home with a smile on your face every time. Remember, never, ever fight the sea, you may win a few skirmishes now and again yet in the finial battle old Neptune will pitch-pole or role her, de-mast her and leave you far astern without as much as a "wasn't that fun". My wife and I went through 5 vessels (sail) before we eventually fell in like with a 64' Ketch rig, we learned to deeply appreciate and respect her as our home and an entity unto herself, in the end, we loved her as only seafaring folks can love a safe place to be at sea or tied long-side a quay in ports around the Caribbean, Mexico and the Bahamas on passages to many to count. Keep up the dream! ..and take your time choosing the right boat. We bought our first boat which was too big for us and we lost a bit of money. But we have regrouped and are starting again! Point is don't get down!

In your first video there were short, glimpses of this boat which showed telltales of other issues which permeated the entire structure. Glad your surveyor talked straight, and you passed. Good call.

We went through the same exact thing! Found a boat in our price range but going back and forth between Mississippi and Panama City, FL a few times, survey, hotel rooms etc... we probably spent over 2k just looking at that particular boat. We were heartbroken. After the survey we were so bummed out. But were kicked back in gear, and back on track looking at other boats and even acquired a free 31' Seafarer which we are now in the process of giving away. Mantus!! great anchor! 12,000 views already on your second episode..I don't know if there is any appropriate considerations for the H.R. decks as far as a preserver brush on product of some kind. Check into that. Did I see part of a windvane.Oh my gosh!! So nice and expensive. In heavy weather a windvane out stears an autopilot....And.. thats win you really appreciate the help. Probably doesn't need it but I would switch out the impeller. If the existing one fails its a BIG problem , plus your motor overheating and lift pump warping. ( and dismantling part of your motor to dig out the parts.) Watch how sailing ruby rose folks apply lots of comfort to their cruising. I like her morning briefing where she talks through whats going on. Lots of pillows, tea, chats . G.T. There experienced so its nice...

At 14:43, I met my wife on Friday night , spent the night with her then moved in the next Thursday, in Jan 1992. Still together ! ANYTHING is possible !!! lol New viewer from 'Learning The Lines'. 2nd video. 66 yrs old !

1st I hope the 2nd boat turns up in much better shape as you have not seen the hull (so far), on first glance it is much more workable than boat A. 2nd I hope you learn something about old boats from your experience. Typically a certain brand will show the same problems across the line unless there were major changes in const. tech or owner changes. You will spend half your kitty on upkeep and unplanned expenses. You could easily spend 10k repairing the rigging. SY Zero spent almost $9k US to repair his rudder and he did most of the work. That new Yanmar may save your asses one day, take care of her. 3rd Learn seamanship, take classes, crew other boats on deliveries or passages. Get a Captains lic eventually. Read everything you can find. Always set anchor alarms and make sure you use enough scope, check the set. Also join the group that gives you the best towing deals, you will run aground. Avoid bad decisions and Get There Itis. Take safety seriously, more so underway. I have 50 years of boat experience and currently own 4 all in refit lol. Good Luck and following winds.

I agree with all the comments never give up on your dreams. Wish I had done this kind of stuff when I was younger but it't never to late. We sold our house in Canada and moved full time to the island of Roatan last year.

We looked into a similar lifestyle 25 years ago when we moved to Florida. Regret that we did not get a boat then, and still do! I just noticed you write that your looking for a "bluewater" boat. I expect you know, already, or you wouldn't know the difference between a coastal cruiser or a touring boat. Just in case, you might look up "angle of vanishing stability", be aware of the formula for "comfort vs stability", and always remember, a narrow hull comes back a wide hull turns over. A bluewater will be narrow, like the Pearson.

Looking forward to the survey on this one, it was pretty obvious the condition of the first one with just a few views of it. Colorado is cool too, Love it there in summer, did that after my first sailing in Caribbean adventure, now i'm on the water again in Charleston. If you're heading toward the USVI's or BVI's marking on a paper chart the great anchorages Sailing yacht Ruby Rose talks about as really good ( while watching episodes) would give you some early destinations where things are really good; glassy or settled water, provisioning, buddy boaters or friends, etc. If the anchorage you find yourselves in is rolly basically you will have to leave or at least run a stern anchor out to keep your nose pointed at the swell. I've seen, in my couch sailing experience, several surveys, and this is the type of guy I'd like to find when I do mine. He knows the impulsive nature of first time sailboat folks and he's kindly telling you the bottom line. I might have a small whiteboard with me so I could add this up because its all relative, and fixer uppers take money but a lot of I depends on who is doing the fixing. I haven't seen him show galvanic stuff yet, and not sure he will even get to that point. This boat seems to have some expensive problems and you haven't seen the engine yet.

Congratulations on the boat! Kind of surprised us that the surveyor didn't know the difference between a Bruce, delta and CQR anchor -- and the fact he'd suggest painting a rusty old CQR when you can get good used CQR's practically for free these days. Anyways, congrats and hope to share an anchorage someday.

So, I'm maybe 10 years behind you. The second they tell me I can take an early retirement, I'm gone. I have to admit I got excited to hear you talk about going with an electric engine. I want to do solar/electric and there is really only one other sailing channel that talks about it. So I really hope it works out eventually and you go that route.

This boat looks very cute! Good luck in sailing! I think if I were in the place of those people who bought a boat and have no experience, you need to take the team captain. The captain, who, for example, for some reason do not have their own boats, but sailing with a great experience. Or a couple of husband and wife. For some time it will be a unique experience for you!

That was a good survey it showed that it was probably not the boat that you are looking for! Nothing wrong with that! its just a learning lesson of what to look for next time before you pay for a survey. I think with any sailboat 28 ft and over there are so many things to look at, you just need a good and impartial surveyor! Personally I just get to emotional and loose my objectivity.

I like the overall result you got from the survey - I agreed with most of what he was saying. One thing, however, struck me as odd: at one point, Surveyor John was spinning what appeared to be the roller furling on the forestay, and said it was broken, and that it was for rolling up the 'sheet'. It was my understanding - from reading the material in ASA101 that a 'sheet' refers to the lines, not the sail. But a roller furling rolls up the sail, not the sheet.

Hi guys. Great video and I like your approach. I have a PhD in sailing.........from U of Tube. Looking for my dream yacht as well. Being a bit older my budget is a bit bigger, but I will be going through the same steps. I'm also an Engineer and grew up building and fixing most things so doing my own upgrades and repairs will not be an issue. I'll be looking for your next video. Keep the faith. Doing it while you're young is a great way to go. Even if you change your dreams, you will have time to make the adjustment. Mike

It's great to have a dream but a plot of land is so much more of a solid investment and it can only go up in value. Boats are a lot of work and expensive to maintain. You two make great couple, what ever your choice may be I'm sure you'll live a long and happy life together!

That sounds like a really good price. Did a quick check, and here in sweden they seem to costs twice as much. But that could also be down to a difference in market overall. Looking forward to follow your adventure as we continue on the road to our own with our Malö 106.

Well I hope this all works out. If you have doubt between tiny house and world sailing, go for the tiny house. Some fully equipped boats out here in San Diego for good price. Pacific Seacraft 37, and a Valiant 42. Also the community for Blue Water Sailing. Good luck for what ever you decide.

A link on maintaining Hallberg -Rassy teak decks. Bleach 50-50 with water to get rid of black spots. I would rinse as soon as black spots are gone..then wash often salt water or fresh. there's a little Marina in Green Cove Springs Florida where there are usually a lot of owners working on their own boats and refitting them on the hard and usually there are some pretty decent boats in there for sale that someone has given up on Midway through the project. If you're interested I will try see if I can contact any of my old friends there and get you more information just an offer let me know
