Spotify is just another Gatekeeper. Build your audience, don't rely on Spotify's Playlists to help your career. They don't care. They sit down with labels and discuss what artists should be on which playlists. Your fans and you are the only ones that care. So look after them, do everything for yourself and for them and nobody else.

If it's true they plan playlist placements with labels, then so much for their vaunted "level playing field" for label-connected artists and independent artists.

I believe in this fully. I made it into an editorial as a solo artist once by chance and then had a track perform incredibly well organically (over 150k in 3 months) and I didn't get into any editorial. I feel it has all changed in the way you have said, the landscape has changed and major labels get the say over editorial slots way before any independent artists do. Also from what I can see in my current genre any independent artist whos track is doing well will be quickly snapped up by a label and signed before it is pushed on Spotify. Majority of these artists gain this sort of traction on SoundCloud first then what I said above happens and thats how they make it into editorials.

Big Facts. Major Labels have a HUGE advantage. At this Point It’s Almost Click bait to give playlisting Advice for Indie Artists. I Know of Friends who got Their very First (!) Release in big Spotify editorials because of Label Connections. it’s obvious that These Spots are Reserved for Label artists

I finally got added to a big Spotify editorial playlist. In my case I just kept releasing year after year. I haven't been playing live, my socials are a ghost town, monthly listeners were only 250 but I spend a good few months or more making the best track I can and just keep releasing what feel like good tracks. With 100 000 new tracks being added every day I thought my chances of getting editorial playlisting were next to zero but I love making music and even if only a handful hear it and like it still means something to me so I keep making music and get a bit better year by year. So even if you are only releasing good music but your live and socials are not so strong it can still happen but yeah better chances if you can get all areas cranking.

So, how does an artist present their One Sheet to Spotify? They've never written about it or asked any artists I know for one. Also, many artists, eg us, do not have a live act. We're doing reasonably OK on Spotify regardless. Will add forthcoming plans to our pitches, though!

No. Just No. While I agree that you should always work to build your community and fan connections, if a Spotify playlist editor - AKA the new industry gatekeepers - like a particular song that is submitted, then they should place it. That’s it. It should NOT be determined by live shows and a release plans. Think of it like this. Some kid in a deeply poor nation somehow figure out a a way to get track up to Spotify. He / she had no community or live gigs… just a dream to share music and it took everything just to do make the song. Can you imagine what would happen if that track landed on New Music Friday or some other massive Spotify playlist? Their whole world would change. The song quality alone should be sufficient. Spotify is the new radio, and the Spotify playlist editors are the new radio directors who “interface” with the labels.

Funny, the other night I was listening to some podcast to put me to sleep on YT. 3/4 of the time had little substance. Not always on point (discussing subject spelled out in the title) and a lot of segways and gossip. In the end the guy was boasting how they made it to 2h 30mins mark. I think he mentioned it at least 4-5 times. Then I see this today and think: love the bite size format, as much as the long form from Burstimo. I guess it's about the value packed in the hh:mm:ss

Lol this is such a lie. It all comes down to luck and who you know. I've been on 20+ editorials without performing, showing my face or doing anything outside of Spotify. If you really want to get good placements you need to contact the editors yourselves or sign to big labels with connections. Besides that, it's 99% luck and timing.

@burstimo, so if I'm taking this video at face value - where Spotify asks about promotion (I can't remember the exact wording at the moment) in the pitching form, then we should be making sure that some of that real estate covers our release strategy coming up after the single we are pitching?
@US3Rofficial
@US3Rofficial Год назад
yes - in a meeting these materials are useful. but for artists who can only communicate with Spotify via the editorial pitch forms, how does this strategy change?
@BaileyMagikz
@BaileyMagikz Год назад
I don't have a problem with playlist pitching, but it's concerning that in this video, they requested to listen to future releases outside of the pitching process. This contradicts the fundamental purpose of having algorithims, as it implies that Spotify is selecting artists independently and establishing direct contact with the PR teams of their favorites. I appreciate this insight, as it confirms that Spotify is choosing individuals beyond playlist inclusion and engaging in direct communication with their preferred artists' PR representatives.

I’m a big fan of you guys channel but this video has so much wrong information (for independent artists) or at least a missing info. this only applies if you’re on a major label or be able to be one of the very top track that the distributor is able to pitch in those sessions with Spotify. if you don’t belong to them it’s simply algorithm based and if you get lucky if you land in front of the eyes in ears of the person who’s creating the playlist. In germany on Spotify All Music Friday event I was able to meet the head of dance and she explained how their system works and how she spot new trends based on data and recommendations of “tastemakers” and colleagues from all over the world. What she didn’t say but I believe is the truth: there is so and so many spots in the lists that have to be given to major artists. the major labels basically keeping Spotify alive with their funding and Spotify pays them back in royalties so there’s a constant flow of money between those companies. Spotify never make profits ever since and they don’t need to because labels keep this platform alive. the more independent artists they playlist, the more money leaves this circle of money flow between Spotify and the majors. The system will stop working. That’s why chances are extremely low to become playlisted because they need the slots in Playlists to keep the money flowing. Or why is every week another David Guetta track in dozens of playlists even if you can only pitch until a week ahead of release? 😅

I never wanted to make music with vocals. But then I decided to do it anyway, because the probability of ending up on a playlist is higher. Of course, the current track with vocals was not enough to land on a playlist, which is not surprising. Still, the song would be well suited for the target audience if it were individually reviewed. But since I don't cover the industry spectrum, concerts, live acts, etc., that's not going to happen anyway. So it's better not to think about placement anymore. That was naive beginner's thinking. Provides a certain inner peace, especially as an artist with a small follower base.

How does it matter though. I mean if the music is good it's good and if it fits the playlist it should be on there. I don't do live plays. So I'll never see myself on a playlist.
@Burstimo
@Burstimo Год назад
They want to support artists long term by having recognisable names on their playlists. If each playlist is filled with artists they don't recognise then the users will become bored of Spotify as they don't connect with the artists because there are so many. Maybe it's a bad way of doing it, maybe it's good, but it's their platform so they can choose artists how they want so if we want to thrive on their platform we have to adhere to their criteria.
@ErickT_MX
@ErickT_MX Год назад
@@Burstimo So, Spotify will not be the place to discover new music anymore? Looks like they will be focused only on stablished names... Time to move to alternatives where the community loves to find new gems even if they come from unknown artists. AUDIUS is a really great example.
@secretarchivesofthevatican
@secretarchivesofthevatican Год назад
@@Burstimo So, it seems like you're saying it is essentially that the old industry has hijacked the modern world and the big three labels with their hyped artists will get on there because people have already heard of them. Does this not mean that companies such as yours are pointless because unknowns are wasting their time as people don't already know them?

Dont worry man! I have an electronic music project going since two years and landed an editorial two times during this time. We never play live. We just care for social media content and good engagement. And suddenly we got playlisted on an Editorial with 900k followers side by side with deadmau5 and other bigger artists. Spotify really doesnt seem to care how big or small as an artist you are. They just wanna see some engagement and good quality stuff. Keep it going!!

why bother really? Spotify never cared about musicians or music at all. If you pay or do hard PR work you'll get the streams you want, probably just the numbers to display (no money). They've been creating fake artists and auto generating music with AI for years now, nobody stops them. They put this music into their playlists to avoid paying the artists... no one says a word. Isn't this illegal? it should be, I'm not paying to listen to bots. Playlists should disappear and people should stop being lazy and start choosing the music they want to listen to. Artists must boycott these streaming platforms before is too late to stop them.
