What is Plarn you say. Well it is plastic yarn. Using old scrap bags we recycle it into something that can be woven, knitted, or crocheted. It is a great way to use up old plastic bags and can create some interesting things with the different colours of plastic around.

A lady in our card group used to make tote bags from the pink bags that our newspapers are delivered in. She crocheted them and would add a stripe of a different coloured bag. I won one of her bags at a Christmas do and totally enjoyed using it it was so sturdy and strong

My mother and her friends in their retirement community would make plarn using your second method and then crochet them into mats for the homeless. In pre-COVID times they would get together once a week or so in a community room. They had a great time chatting and working. I hope they can get back to it soon as everyone in the community has been vaccinated!

My Grandmother was way ahead of her time. Years before plastic grocery bags appeared on the scene, she used bread wrappers. Cut them in 1 inch strips an start crocheting them into circles to make mud porch rugs and place matts. I remember them being mostly white with some red, yellow & blue so they had to be Wonder bread wrappers. She passed away at 101 in the mid 1980's. I know one set still exists in perfect condition but I have 5 brothers and 4 sisters and one of them has the set but will not fess up. LOL! All I want is a snapshot of the set.

Down in Florida where my mom lives, she makes the plarn and then takes it to her local library for another group of ladies who make bedrolls for the homeless.

You could take the bits you trimmed off and put them on like a fringe to the body of what you made and then it becomes an absolute no waste project.

Hmmmm! I use them for trash bags, instead of buying trash bags. Takes a 3 gallon trash can from Dollar General. The bags with holes go in bathroom or bedroom. Good bags used in the kitchen.
