Late bedtime, early wakings, 2 year old sleep regression & separation anxiety- this video explains 2 year old sleep problems & how to avoid them.These 2 year old sleep training tips will get your toddler sleeping through the night.
2 year old sleep problems
#1: A late/inconsistent bedtime make toddlers sleep worse. If toddler's bedtime is 9 pm or later then he'll wake up more at night or earlier in the morning. His body clock is naturally programmed for bedtime between 6:30-8:00 pm.
Your toddler's nap should fall in the middle of his day. At 2 years old, limit your toddler's nap. As he gets older he needs less day time sleep to save night sleep.
Your toddler may be fighting bedtime from normal 2 year old resistance. A great way to combat this is to have a firm ending to your bedtime routine. Let your toddler know that every night
once you sing this song or read this book then it’s a sign that the bedtime routine is over and itime for him to sleep. Put a bedtime chart on your the bedroom wall. You can't deviate from this because it's there on the wall for your toddler to see it.
#2: The 2 year sleep regression. Sleep regressions are sudden disruptions in
sleep for a child who was previous sleeping well and they coincide
with development. Signs of the 2 year sleep regression are
fighting bedtime or naps out of the blue, waking more at night, clinginess, fussiness or restlessness & nightmares. If your toddler was sleeping well before the regression hit, stick tight to your consistent sleep routines and timing. Keep your toddler sleeping in his crib all night and falling asleep on his own. Avoid taking him out of his crib and changing his sleep space like pulling him into your bed or rocking him several times at night.
#3: Separation anxiety.
If your LO is going through big changes like starting daycare, welcoming a sibling or potty training separation anxiety can increase. In times of change your LO's sleep can suffer and she may look to you for comfort or stability. Ease your 2 year old's separation anxiety by being present. Find moments in the day where you can spend quality time without any distractions. At bedtime explain to your 2 yo that you're nearby. If she gets upset about sleeping alone, sit quietly in a chair for her to fall asleep. Also offer a lovey which is any item that brings comfort to your child. Encourage your toddler to cuddle with his buddy to keep him company in the night.
#4: Nightmares are bad dreams that upset your child. They are normal and caused by overtiredness, growing imagination,
books, videos or a scary encounter from the day. You can wake your toddler up from them and explain that it's not real.
It's impossible to wake your child up from a night terror. But the good news is they don't remember them. You just have to sit next to your child and wait
it out. Night terrors are usually caused by chronic over tiredness, sickness, stress, anxiety or jet lag. Make sure your toddler
feels safe in his bedroom. Do an inventory of books and videos he watches. During the day when your toddler is awake and happy have a simple discussion and ask him if anything's bothering him, if he's worried or if anything's scaring him.
#5: Coming into parents bed at night. The easiest way to prevent your 2 year old from coming into your bed at night is to keep him in the crib. You want your toddler in the crib as long as possible until age 3 or 4. Wait until he is repeatedly crawling out of the crib and this becomes a safety risk.
#6: Snoring. If your toddler occasionally snores don't worry. If your toddler is regularly snoring at night and seems tired during the day then it could be something bigger. In that case speak to your doctor about it.
Constant night wakings are exhausting. Your 2 yo can sleep 11-12 hours straight every night without waking up. If your toddler's sleep problems or night wakings are recent then it's probably due to 1 of the sleep problems we just discussed. Following my advice for several days will get your 2 yo sleep back on track. But if your 2 yo has never consistently slept well, don't worry! It's never too late to teach your toddler to sleep well at night and during the day.

Hi, and thanks for your comment! When kids transition out of the crib before age 3 it can cause sleep disruptions. They lack the impulse control to stay in their bed. Hello, thanks for all the help you post it’s helped me out in the past. I have a 2.5 year old that has always been a fantastic sleeper. Just recently….two nights ago in fact he woke up in the middle of the night Hysterical and wouldn’t go back to sleep, he seemed absolutely terrified ( which I initially put down to too much chocolate and sugar on that day as his little sister had a big birthday party. I must add he doesn’t have that sort of food at all usually ) and now he will not go to sleep at all unless you are in the room with him which is making me think he had a nightmare. When he does go sleep he wakes up in the middle of the night running out if I room hysterically crying. Also I must add he’s been potty training for 6 weeks now and that’s going well. Now I know you said it’s fine to do this for a few days but I’m concerned that he will get used to this behaviour and that’s not ideal. Could you suggest anything for me to try because the hysterical crying is Torturous to hear I’m hoping some other poor soul has been through this same situation and you could advise me and my wife on what to do? Thanks in advance.

We have 2 year old and a 4 month old. Our 2 year old was an amazing sleeper but last few months not so great! Sounds like after watching this that it may be sleep regression (which she never had before).We have taken her cot barrier down, different night routines, different times to go to bed etc and no I’ve started a chart. She just won’t sleep without us in the room somehow. She now gets up every few hours to check and comes to our bed now. We are exhausted!

Hi, First thank you for helping me with my baby, we’re sleeping and happy 😃 I have a good friend and her son is 21 months, she has always rocked him to sleep and eventually transitioned to laying with him until he sleeps. Unfortunately she felt he was too big for the crib and removed it months ago and he now sleeps on a mattress beside their own bed. The problem is he will not fall asleep on his own and she has to lay there 2 hours until he finally falls asleep at about 10pm. What advice do you have for this situation how can she teach him to fall asleep on his own? Any recommendations would be super helpful! Thank you so much! ❤️

Hi Larissa! Glad we've helped you. 💜If you want to make money referring us, sign up here: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/referral-program/ We don't recommend transitioning out of the crib until 3-4 years old, because it always leads to sleep issues. Children just aren't developmentally ready before this age to sleep without physical boundaries. She could either move baby to a travel crib and sleep train with us, and we can transition baby to a toddler bed when they're ready. Here is our program: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/baby-sleep-consultant Otherwise, she can try best she can to help her baby sleep well on the mattress using these tips. www.babysleepmadesimple.com/how-to-transition-toddler-from-crib-to-bed/ Good luck! i have put him on a regular huge bed since he was a year old. he was feeling very bad in the crib and didn't sleep in it, also he's big and loves large spaces. when i put him on a huge bed, i started the night laying next to him till he falls asleep, then i would leave. now he's almost 2 but laying next to him is just adding 2 hours of nightmare to my life -_- he's crawling, trying to get down the bed, moving the pillows, standing up, playing with blinds, kicking here and there, i have a few broken bones - it's a joke but bruises i have. so today was my final drop-of-patience day. my husband's only response is "let's take him for a car ride" - i do it only when im hopeless. today i didnt do it. will try to put him to sleep earlier than 10pm :/ will take the first advice. hope it works. because he's always been a very quiet and ideal baby starting from pregnancy, and i hate myself that i get angry with him when he's going through a hard phase.

Let her cry it out? She was asleep by 8.20pm and up screaming at 10pm. I tried settling her again in her crib but no chance. It’s like she is possessed. Hello, we’ve followed this method to the letter and our 2-year-old is now falling asleep very quickly (and most of the time after we have left the room)!! This is amazing but he is still waking up every two hours during the night, even though he has been falling asleep by himself in his room. We have tried everything; background lights, heating, music, clear routine, good midday nap, etc. but nothing seems to be stopping his immediate reaction to come to our bedroom when he wakes up. Any suggestions? Thanks!

My son is 2.5 almost 3 and takes 1.5 hr nap. We start bedtime at 7. Full routine. Bath, pjs, and two books. Yet keeeeeeps getting up and up and up. Sometimes still up at 9. Wakes up in the middle of the night and always gets in bed with us around 12-2am and it’s killing me. I’ve stayed consistent and even comfort him and sometimes stay in his room but nothing is working 😖

Hi Eden, Our approach to this is to keep your little one in a diaper at night until they're out of the crib. Ideally, they sleep in a crib until age 3 years so they can stay safe at night. If you've already transitioned out of the crib and need help balancing potty training & sleep, I'd recommend you book a private consultation with one of our sleep consultants to discuss this! programs.babysleepmadesimple.com/30-minutes-private-consultation-checkout/ I hope this helps, Artemis, BSMS Support Team

I'll take any info/help right now, my toddler (3yrs old) goes to bed at 8pm but he isn't falling asleep until 12-1am and then is awake from 3-5am, sleeps from 5-8am, takes long naps about 3-5pm in the afternoon, because of this I can't sleep and mind set of what's the point sleeping if he is only going to wake up soon, getting about an 1-2hr of sleep a day that its effecting me daily and I'm borderline insomniac and depression. I have stuck to bedtime retinues since be was 6months old, talked to MW and Doctors and nothing has worked (my little guy is a stubborn one haha) this has been going on for almost 3yrs. thank you, I'm going to check out all your links, sub and get back to you on how we go.

Hello and thanks for your message! We would love to help you! I know how tough it is when your little one isn't sleeping. My first thought is that your little one is napping too late in the day. Because he falls asleep at 5pm, he only has 3 hours of awake time until an 8pm bedtime, which isn't enough time. I would try an earlier nap time, 1:30-3:30PM and see how that works. If you prefer more details and a step-by-step guide to get your LO sleeping through the night, then I highly recommend our program, 21 Days to Peace & Quiet. In this program we offer 4 step-by-step sleep training methods. You choose the one that feels best for your LO. We have super gentle & gradual all the way to quick & efficient. Each step of the way you get advice based on your baby’s developmental stage, energy levels, and temperament. You can find out more info on the program here: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/21-days-to-peace-quiet-program When you are 100% consistent in following the steps of the program, your baby will be sleeping amazingly within 1-3 weeks. My baby just turned 2 years old 6 days ago and she started climbing out of her cot bed when she was 22 months old and today i realised it’s not safe also it’s her first time to sleep do in her bedroom, we used to share a bedroom so there was my bed for her to land on when she climbs out of her cot but now it’s a carpet only and I realised it’s too risky. How do I stop her from climbing out of her cot bed I had to remove one cot rail for her safety and for my peace of mind as I’m typing I’m sleeping on the floor besides her cot for her comfort to get used to sleeping in her bedroom. I would appreciate your advice x

Hi! Here is our guide on transitioning from crib to toddler bed: www.babysleepmadesimple.com/how-to-transition-toddler-from-crib-to-bed You can also use these tips to help keep her in the crib as long as possible: If your crib has uneven sides, put the shorter side against the wall and push it up against a corner, so there are less sides to climb out. Make sure there are no bumpers, pillows, or blankets that are in the crib that your LO can use for height to climb out. Try a sleep sack. Have the mattress at the lowest setting Try this for a few days and nights with a firm “No” when your LO tries to climb out. See if this helps after a few days Clare, BSMS Support Team

My two year old has never been a good sleeper, but around 2.5 he got much better and was sleeping through the night in his own bed for the most part. But since his baby sister arrived a few months ago, he wakes up every night and comes into our bed. He says, no one is in his room with him. I feel bad because he is right, he is the only one sleeping in his own room while mom, dad, and baby sister are in a room together. So I give in but I know I am creating a bad habit. She goes to sleep on her own no problem, but I'm just having a hard time tackling the night wakings. I don't want to just leave her there to cry, any suggestions? Maybe sitting with her until she falls asleep in the middle of the night? I hope you and your family are doing well!

Hello! Thanks so much for your message. We are glad that you had success. You can try to repeat the sleep training method that you used when your LO was young. It sounds like your LO needs to learn how to self-soothe again during the middle of the night. You can try sitting with her and then gradually moving away from the crib every night until you are out the door. The most important thing is to get her back to soothing on her own for those night wakings! :) Alyssa, BSMS Support Team

Thank you for sharing this, it has great information. I also watched and read your survival kit, but one thing I didn't see addressed is when my 2 year old wakes up at 4:30 a.m., do I have him go back to sleep and continue putting him to bed earlier 15 min every day or just let him stay up and continue with the program of 15 min. earlier every night? He will cry/scream for hours if we don't get him out of his crib. His bed time was 8:30-9:00, but I now know this is too late and I've slowly been transitioning him for the past few days to no avail just yet since I discovered your website. He naps everyday for the most part from 12:15pm-2:15pm. Thank you!
@nilayjordon
@nilayjordon 4 года назад
To add to my question above, I should also mention that I have blackout curtains, white noise, wind-down about 30-40 minutes before bed i.e books/no screen time/dimmed lights. There has never been co-sleeping, he has a few loveys, he is very active during the day and he's a great eater, we keep his daycare routine on the weekends too, he has no sugar with or after dinner, he doesn't climb out of his crib (regularly), he doesn't wake in the middle of the night and doesn't snore. He screams like his crib is on fire, but if I bring him to the couch in the family room, he'll pass out in 3 minutes for a few hours because he's tired. There have been no major changes in our lives in a long time and he's been getting up early for months! We started at putting him to bed at 8:30pm-9:00pm, and we have decreased it to 8:00pm in 15 minute increments in the past week with no change. We will try to go earlier in the next few days also. So, my questions was....should he go back to sleep (on the family room couch) for a few hours or stay up after waking at 4:30am and hope that putting him to be earlier eventually works, or should I let him cry/scream it out for hours? (he's very very persistent) Yikes, this is long, but my patience has become very short :(

@@nilayjordon Hi Nilay! Thanks for your comment! It seems like the best solution right now is moving bedtime earlier, which will ease the over tiredness. If your LO is having nightmares, it can also be a sign of overtiredness, so an earlier bedtime is a win win. It is also completely normal for your LO to scream in bed but fall asleep as soon as you're next to him. In the long run, it would be good to find other ways to help your LO from any sleep aids/habits and separation anxiety. It will take some time to get back on the track, so be consistent and patient. If you'd like more detailed assistance, I strongly recommend joining our program, 21 Days to Peace&Quiet. Hello Joe! Is your LO around 2 years old? We often see a sleep regression around 2 years old, and having a newborn around can cause a little chaos at first. This was exactly me this past June! I would definitely make sure to have a white noise machine in your 2 year old's room so that he isn't woken up from any newborn crying. This helped me tremendously. Next, I would make sure he falls asleep independently. He may become dependent on being held to fall asleep. If he is crying, just check in at timed intervals. We cover more of this in our sleep program if you are looking for step by step guidance. Also, check out our free 2 year old sleep guide for helpful tips! Congrats on your new baby! The good news is that your daughter can learn to fall asleep independently despite her co-sleeping past. We have helped so many families go from co-sleeping to the crib! I would really recommend checking out our Big Kid course. We will walk you step by step during the sleep training process to help get your LO sleeping well. Hi Ruby! I understand how exhausting it can be to feel like you are in a perpetual state of sleep training. No family wants to do this! The great news is that your toddler CAN learn how to sleep beautifully at night, and our program will help you get there and will show you how to maintain that sleep. You don't want to feel like you are having to sleep train over and over. Toddlers are busy little bees and have a lot of big emotions to process! Our program is developmentally designed to help target toddler behaviors. I would recommend signing up for the Big Kid course with support so you can get access to all of this content, and also, get the opportunity to join Zoom calls and chat with a sleep consultant. My now 2 yr old goes to sleep ok on his own but wont go to sleep until 10-11pm. He wakes up around 6:30am to go to the bathroom but then sleeps until 8:30-9am. He has a problem with not wanting to nap until around 2-3pm and im worried it's too late to nap...any advice on trying to make bedtime earlier? Even if he doesnt nap he still wont go to bed before 10
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 4 года назад
The best way to have an earlier bedtime is to wake your toddler up earlier in the morning. Move his awake time earlier by 30 mins every day. So wake him at 8:30 am today, and 8 am tomorrow. He can be expected to sleep 11-12 hours at night. You also move his nap earlier so his awake times are 5-6 hours and voila! You have an earlier sleep schedule. I hope this helps.

My toddler (21-months) goes to a home daycare, naps between 12 and 2pm, we put both the 21-month and 32-month old down at 7pm. It’s the 21-month old who is high energy and wants to play. He needs to be laid with or he will get up, open the door, and bust the gate down. The 21-month old also wakes up at 4 am every morning. It seems like his circadian rhythm needs to be reset. Hi there Saira. Normally, most kids stop napping around 4 years old. It's not wrong if your LO stopped napping, but it would be better if they did. Also it depends, whether your kid is happy or not. If they get grumpy or fussy during the day, or their night sleep is interrupted due to overtiredness maybe they still need to nap for an hour or so. Hello, My 2.4 year old son started to refuse his afternoon nap. He doesn’t sleep by himself. He never did since a baby. I have to be there next to him until he falls asleep. I used to rock him out but now he doesn’t even want to be rocked anymore. Anyway my back doesn’t allow that anymore either😔 I can’t always lay down with him because the baby on the other hand wont let me. Baby doesn’t sleep either longer than 30-40 min naps, during the day and 30 min sometimes its not enough time for my toddler to fall asleep🤦🏻‍♀️ Could you please send some sleep training advice or any tips what I need to do? My toddler when he finally goes to sleep at 7:30-8pm will sleep 12 hours straight. Its that enough sleep for a 2 year old? The afternoons are horrible because he is super tired and becomes so moody and will have tantrums for nothing because he is overtired. I don’t know what to do to help him. I tried everything i know best and nothing seems to work. Thank you for your time and support!

Surprisingly she’s very smart and can count upto 13 and knows her abc and her colours. Should I be concerned with her sleeping time? She has way too much energy. So sorry to hear that, you (and your little one) must be exhausted. This is actually very normal - because a well-rested child actually sleeps LONGER, and an overtired child sleeps LESS. It's counterintuitive, but it's true! Once you get in a 1 hr nap/day, her night sleep will improve and she'll sleep 9-10 hrs at night instead. An active mind can also create night terrors . Some of us don't have good dreams we don't have nightmares it's pure terror and the difference is the emotional impact of the dream... Steven King only has nightmares. Always try to wake them it's better to stop it and comfort them. Dreams are not contextual they are all about the emotions and the brain practices encountering emotions you don't often feel. If you are not loved you will dream of love if you are never truly frightened or terrified your brain will do practice runs of that emotion. So not really a bad thing to have nightmares it means your other basic emotions have been fulfilled. I'm 40 and I have been researching dreams for about 25 years. This is what I have found to be true for my situation. Unfortunately my daughter has terrifying dreams too never giggling shes always fighting. 😞 there are drugs to suppress the memory of bad dreams none of which can be taken until adulthood. You will still have them you just won't consciously remember them and be emotionally disturbed for the rest of the morning or day.
@Babysleepmadesimple
@Babysleepmadesimple 2 года назад
Hi, Mike! There's a big difference between night terrors and nightmares. You can't be woken up from a night terror and you usually don't remember it in the morning. Nightmares are a normal way our brain uses to handle any pieces of information that might have been scary or uncomfortable. This is why you can try to avoid any triggers during the day so that your child doesn't have bad dreams. For example, getting adequate rest, avoiding overstimulating/scary books and videos, having a stable, loving home and proper nutrition- many of these are mentioned in the video. Thank you for your feedback, though! Artemis, BSMS Support Team

My 21 month old just hit his 2 year regression HARD. Beautiful sleeper before aside from being sick. Hed ask to be put in bed at night time. Now he starts tantrums when we get into book reading right before bed because he anticipates. He screams and cries, "MAMA DADA" over and over for 30mins before sleep even though we check in every 5 to 10 mins. He then wakes up 3 hours after sleep wailing the same. We resorted to putting him in bed with us at 3am because he cries and cries hysterically. I hate hearing him cry so much during our check-ins but I know we shouldnt introduce bed sharing 😢

So if I implemented an earlier sleep schedule, my fiance wouldn't get much time to spend with our son, he's just shy of turning 2. He's been going to sleep inconsistently between 8 and 11pm. It's rough on us, especially me, because I am still breastfeeding as well. I really don't know what to do. I'm so stressed and conflicted over his sleep schedule when I don't get much sleep myself. I tend to wake up late because of this, which ends up affecting my son's sleep pattern.

Hello, Please don't feel like a terrible parent! You are the perfect parent for your little one. Children under 5 years of age do better with earlier bedtimes. An 8pm bedtime is very reasonable at this age. I would have your fiance be very active in the bedtime routine process so that way he can spend quality time with your little one! This works very well for parents on a later schedule. We do offer 1:1 private Zoom consults if you need assistance creating a customized schedule for your son! We would love to support you. programs.babysleepmadesimple.com/30-minutes-private-consultation-checkout/ Best, Alyssa, BSMS Client Support Manager

Hello and thanks for your message! It sounds like your LO is getting close to the 2 year mark and we often see a regression around this time. Keep encouraging your LO to nap or at least "rest" in the crib during the designated nap time. Be super consistent with your routines since the nap regression should pass. Check out this guide for helpful tips! Alyssa, BSMS Support Team www.babysleepmadesimple.com/when-do-toddlers-stop-napping

Hi, my 2 year old kid seems super energetic and he wants anything but sleep. We always ask him to go to bed at 8:30 but he always wants to read books, watch tv, play some toys or even eat some fruits. He just doesn't want to sleep at all. But he sleeps very well and doesn't wake up until 9am next day. I am so confused and tired, I really need some help and thanks in advance
