Read the manual mate, there is so many features your missing out on. eg vehicle set up with trailer or camper. you can program the units to load and share tracks waypoints etc as well.
Great device! I absolutely love mine. You can get the exoskeleton case and get even more protection. I cut out the back of the exo case to still be able to use the magnetic mount. Cutting the case allows easy swapping between trucks, I even use it in my boat in conjunction with a depth finder. You can extend the awake time so it’s more useful out of the charger. I believe 15 min is the max awake time so no worries about it dying. This also keeps from having to hit all the startup stuff after a quick stop. I also have the reverse camera because of my rear bar. Reverse camera is slightly glitchy sometimes but ok for the most part. Hopefully this helps anyone on the fence about buying one.
@@Tilburger72 I have the b/c 35, it has a slight lag sometimes but nothing that concerns me. It’s only 2-3 seconds on a bad day. Picture is clear and you can set the lines for your vehicle and mounting point
Love your new Troopie bro. Just got myself the last of the V8 200 series in 2020. But now I also want a troopie. They are so handy. I can use it for my work too.
G'day Ronny, This is not in our case overkill so please read, we run (4) GPS devices, because were an off-road expedition truck weighing 14 Ton fully loaded we have to run 1. A dedicated truck GPS, (low bridges, weak bridges & weight restricted roads) 2. A comprehensive up to date Topo GPS, 3. A general town, city etc GPS & 4. my favorite one The Ozy Explorer. Thank goodness for a full size truck cab to fit all this crap in.
...I've been thinking of buying one and searched all over for a decent, down to earth review...! I should have looked you up in the first place hey! A good honest review that told me everything that I wanted to know, ...goodonya...! ...Hmmm, ...now all I need to do is sell the watch, pawn my gold filling, re-mortgage the home......................! 😅
I bought one and find it really frustrating because as youve shown, LOTS of tracks are not in it and I cant use it for planning an offgrid trip since so many tracks dont exist. Hema maps has turned to rubbish is recent years (which is whats installed) and you cant install any other map sets. I find the unit really frustrating, all well and good to create your own but when planning that feature is useless if you dont know its there in the first place. Uploading gpx files is a complete headf&*k at best. Actually the HEMA installed is so bad, that I find the stock City Navigator and even Toyota maps have more detail and that sucks balls. Next, Ill be trying ExploreOz in an ipad as it gets rave reviews, its just an expensive changeover and the only reason Ive stuck with it for now. Actually, the suction mount is the best thing about it!
Sucks balls hey :0) Seriously I feel your pain. A &1000 is a lot to pour into a device like that & I drive for a living. I spent $600 on their push bike trip computer years ago & never solved the glitches in that even when I chased garmin on it. I could of down loaded a phone app that did similar for way less. I am over due to buy something decent & if I have to spend a grand, then so be it, but yo don't know what you don't know till you have used the devices for a bit. Don't want to spend a grand only to find out I want a divorce months later, that would chew my balls & spit them out! Which reminds me of my former adultering wife. I will have a look @ ExplorOz, thanks for the tip.
I agree with you I purchased a Overlander a while back and Hema maps are useless as you said. I also have a Hema 7 with WA 4wd tracks installed much better maps.
@@danielb8901 I might look into that as changing platform is just too expensive (buying an ipad etc) . Any more info on Hema 7 and is anything else compatible that you know of?
Update, I contacted Garmin asking if there are any better or upgraded maps to the Hema thats installed.....a big fat NO. No other maps are available. So, I rang Hema, also a big fat NO, there is no plans for any updates being made available to Gatrmin for the Overlander. Im feeling pretty ripped off about now since no other maps will work and cannot be upgraded to vector maps either. 😞 Also discovered another flaw, when youve recorded a track, you cannot export the GPX even though there is a button for it. When you try is says "function not supported" FFS,
I remember watching some early vids and he was unimpressed with his Hema units, non dimming back light at night so bright he had to turn the unit off was one i remember.
I was with him when his Highly Enraging Mapping Applicator (Human eXperimental - 1) went into glitch mode. In short, when recording a track, the unit starts freezing & locking up after an hour or so. Then you have to turn it off & start again. Not good when you are trying to find a particular track & the unit is show where you were 29 minutes ago.
They came out with a new one that has a built in two way radio comms. Also can show you where your friends are on the map in real time. If you travel as a group. It’s a really really good feature to have
Hey Ronny, I'm in the market for one of these, but I was a bit concerned at the end of your video and you through it away saying it will be obsolete, what do you mean? Also one comment mentioned Overlander 2, is this coming out soon?
Good day mate, I like your review of the Overlander. I just got mine and used it for the first time off roading. I could use some extra explanation on using the Explore app. When I select it, Overlander tells me it needs a network connection. It will not allow me to use Explore while driving off road. How do I get the dam thing to work. Anyone, please help! Tom T.
If you are finding tracks that aren’t on the map, it would be terrific if you were able To add them to the open street map. I have a Garmin gps but prefer the iPhone. Especially if you have CarPlay. Check out Gaia-gps or OsmAnd
When are you getting back to doing more trip videos? Main reason I subscribe to this channel was because of the amazing trips you did, but lately it seems to be all about products and your builds which I understand you need to show because you can’t always be away on a trip but honestly it gets a bit boring and repetitive, especially with the click bait titles.
Yeah same. Best thing about Sunday crack of dawn mornings was watching these show's. Had the tv all to myself cause everyone else in bed still. Now I'm not in a hurry to watch them, it's Thursday now and I'm just watching it.
I use a $400 10.1" android tablet with Backcountry Navigator and GaiaGPS. I'll often have them both running as sometimes a track will be on one but not the other. For example BCN on the tablet and GaiaGPS on the phone. Both are offroad/offline topographic navigation apps for hikers, 4wd'ers etc for android and Apple phones and devices. I also have the programs on an old Galaxy phone mounted on my KTM enduro motorcycle. I plan trips on Google Earth by creating routes and POI's, save as a kml file and upload to the two navigation programs.
The Garmin Overlander is a $1000 brick. The mapping detail is severely lacking in comparison to detailed Hema Map Packs. Anyone who has both units knows this. Most tracks are not labelled. All you see is a dotted black line to show a fire trail of some sort. Most camp sites are not marked on the map. Total waste of money.
You are obviously are new to the way Garmin devices work... The Track recording is standard on all Garmin Devices, u just get to choose whether all not u visually want to see it. These track recordings and way points u add are only there until u clear them out of your device. If you choose to keep the tracks that you record, then over time as the memory fills up these tracks will be moved to the archive folder within the device usually.. The Camps that you talked about - You forgot to mention that it as the crow flies (ie: a straight line from your current position) and not the actual road distance. This is important if fuel range is your concern. One benefit with these devices is once purchased, generally there is no ongoing costs, unlike what is coming which will probably cost you a ongoing monthly fee, etc...
I've had mine a little over 3 years now, I up date mine two to three times a year but what I have found now is that it wont remain on either on the 240 or in the vehicle. I get a few noises and then the colour screen of death before it shuts down. any advice out there or repairers in the Nth Qld area. apart from this it had been really good for us. cheers
Love your input on the GPS device you use. I however use a different software and device. The feature I use most often is planning and uploading new tracks with Google Earth then downloading it to my smart phone and tablet. The track is also backed up on my laptop. New tracks and waypoints are added similar to the way you do on your device. I am able to sync all my devices as others have shared this can be done with your device. Keep up the great work, I really enjoy them. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Ronny i bought a few months ago only used it once , it seams to be reliable which is most important. Tell me something with the track recorder after recording can the recording be used in reverse to return to where you started . Also ronny for those people who don't like those useless windscreen mounts i have a Dmax and i made a bracket from steel sheet metal and mounted the magnetic part of the charging base off the handle you use when pulling yourself up into the cabin using one of the screws which attachers the handle. regards Mark enjoy your video's mate.
I've also found those spitters in the bush.Best thing I ever found was an old antique logging truck with a 265 Chrysler engine with the air still in the tyres. This was off a track of a track off another track deep in no man's land in between Dwellingup and Karnet prison...
Interested to know their price. They might be a good product but are they good value?. I have the VMS 700HDX. Their Off Road mode is HOPELESS and their in build Camps/Waypoints are also hopeless with many of them being upto 4km away from the actual spot and on tracks that are much more difficult or even in some cases Walking trails. The on road mode is ok though and it normally isnt too bad for off road trails even in on road mode. When you get to the edge of one map in Off Road mode they take ages to load the next as well. VMS leaves a lot to be desired so rather interested in these.
Hated my Garmin Overlander. Completely useless in Central America unless you are a computer programmer and buy code from a third party… that Garmin doesn’t endorse. The other irritating thing about the mount…you have to power it by their power cord to a cigarette lighter… you can’t use a USB cord
I actually bought one of these about 18 months ago after watching yours and Andrew Whites original reviews on them and have been extremely happy with it, so much so I bought their dezl version for the truck but that model is nowhere near as good unfortunately.
Glad to find someone who likes this. I don’t think the features justify the asking price, overland tax included but either looking forward to the next model or the old one on clearance.
The "not to be named" brand has to be HEMA I sold my HX1 to get a HX2, found HX2 more glitchy and laggy. Does Garmin have any features to upload data to cloud so you can see your tracked routes online similar to that of HEMA cloud?
I’ve got one! And love it! I spotted yours a few months back after I had gotten one. We’ve just used it for a 5 week trip around Norway and Finland this summer. Was a great tool to have!!
I think even in 5-years, there'll be room for devices like this. The screen and robustness of a device like this will always be better than a cell phone or Android tablet/iPad
I’m interested if you have ever added any maps eg hema 72k as the 150k maps are useless where I travel in wa and end end up using trilobite to find tracks and a combination of trilobite and garmin as track recorders. It’s a great device apart from the crappy maps.
I've got a VMS. It's shit. Takes 5 time's some days to get it working. Just randomly turn off. If you have a destination going, when turning a corner it turns of.
Ha Yeah got one also use it along with the garmin power switch for switching one lights and stuff. You can sync them and your maps with the garmin explore app, it’s super simple no manual required 😆. Also bolted mine down with the ram track rail super solid 👍🏼
We don't own a dedicated GPS device. We only use paper maps (Tracks4Africa). Used a GPS device for our first trip to Namibia 7 years ago. We ended up using the paper map more as it had more detail. Now we use Tracks4Africa paper map in conjuction with the Tracks4Africa software loaded on our mobile devices.
I think it is a good device. I am using Samsung Active 3+RAM Mount+Gaia GPS app, and it works great for me. It is also my phone..i.e. one device for everything.
Just purchased one and I'm expecting it in the mail today!! One thing I am curious about for emergency purposes is would it be worth getting a "In reach" device for the trips in the wilderness? Even in the US you find places where you don't have cell reception for miles.
Had mine for over 2 years back when they could be had for 700ish$ on special, i am used to Garmin blue charts and assumed it would be based on this no nonsense platform but found out on first use it is android/lynx? based software which was something no one when I was researching mentioned even once (secret squirrel or something). Since then, I have warmed up to it quite a bit. Ron is right it never glitches or plays up in any way. Still there is nothing comparable (overall) out there even if I do spend some hours at times finding and transferring new track starts, stops, intersects etc over via typed coordinate input from any other of my desktop mapping options. The unit is also slanted toward the blue haired RV crowd to find toilets/well populated major road campgrounds and bakeries/shopping/doctors etc but in the layers behind this is the harder core mapping and gps backend....not as hard core as others but ok for most. It's easy going and would probably buy again unless something even more rounded comes along.
Found your channel a few weeks back and trolling through your archive while being laid up after surgery. Great way to kill the hours and itchy at the bit to get out in the bush👍
Yes I want this but I want it loaded into my permanently mounted double din stereo in my dash. I don't actually want a whole heap of digitql accessories with suction cup or other style mounts, on my dash &/or windscreen. I like a clean factory looking cqb
I wish I did buy one, I hate with a passion the one I did buy and have regretted it ever since. It's glitchy and unresponsive, slow to fire up. I should have gone with the Garmin. Great video on your thoughts of the Garmin.
Been procrastinating for a long time and was about to pull the trigger yesterday as price is reduced, but still didn’t. Mount is disappointing, will not be drilling holes in my dash
For exploring - how do you navigate to co-ordinates? ie, you have the lat and Lon of a point and you want directions, heading, distance etc, How does the unit do that??
Funny to see this as mine is being delivered in the next couple of hours. Played with another brand on display at an ARB store and it was terrible. Looking forward to getting the Garmin.
My off-road set up is a cellular iPad with ExplorOz loaded. Haven’t had a problem. I use google maps for highway driving. Previously I’ve used mud maps 3 and found it very good. Travelled all over the east coast and south Australia. Both apps have all maps downloaded onto the iPad and are also loaded onto my phone (for backup). iPad has additional functionality (including books for reading and tv/movies) so I don’t see why I’d buy a separate navigation system. Totally agree with carrying paper maps. I also like using paper maps to plan trips. Thanks Ronny.
I have the Garmin and dont like it, I want to go to Explore oz but its expensive to change over (need an ipad as well) but Im heading that way eventually I think. Just a whole new learning curve which is always a pain.
I use GPS waypoint navigator on android phones. We travel in various reservations here in Brazil. Some in Amazon forest some in the highlands. Never had an issue with the signal cutting out or any glitches. We rely mainly on the GPS because there are literally no maps with the trails that exist.
