20,000 Leagues Under The Sea Starboard Ride-through 1994 high resolution

It's Summer 1994 and the rumor is that 20K will close for good in September. I had already shot a lot of 20K video, but my Dad had just bought this "Hi-8 wonder camcorder" thing and my brother Brian talked him into letting us borrow it for a day. We did the best we could and this is part of what Brian shot (he knew how to use it), with the two of us discussing focus and other stuff as Nemo takes a moment to appreciate the Aurora Borealis.

This ride terrified me as a kid. One of my earliest memories is standing near the lagoon after they shut it down, but when the lagoon was just sort of this dead space with the tracks visible in the still water below. Sort of like a waiting area, I think; not sure what the area overlooking the lagoon was functioning as during that time. But horrifying. will never forget the eeriness of the still, quiet lagoon with those old tracks visible in the water down below. Ugh. Gives me the creeps.

I absolutely adore the fitting reference to Tony Baxter. If you listen to the on-ride audio around the 7:14 time point, you will hear a reference to 'Mr. Baxter'. It's a shame that this ride was demolished. Apparently it was too difficult and expensive to maintain as whenever anything needed to get done (like an animatronic needing cleaning or repairs) the technician had to scuba dive. Interesting fact, much like the circling sharks in the Graveyard of Lost Ships scene, it was originally planned for there to be circling dolphins somewhere on the ride.

Don't get me wrong, I like Winnie the Pooh. But the thinking at the time was, "Hey! Winnie the Pooh is a popular, successful franchise of ours. But we don't have a place to sell the merchandise inside the parks, what do we do? We'll demolish that old submarine ride that requires a lot of finicky maintenance and make a little Winnie the Pooh land. Yeah, and we'll get rid of that Toad ride (does anyone even remember that movie? Ha ha) Just remember it has to all dump out into the Winnie the Pooh gift shop!" Above all Disney is a corporation, if it doesn't make money or promotes something so IT can make money, they are not actually obligated to keep it, no matter how popular or well loved it is.

Thanks for sharing this. I went on this ride as a really little kid. I remember just parts of it and was amazed! I really wish they didn't have to shut it down. To have to scuba dive to fix and maintain this ride was probably extremely difficult, along with unpredictable weather and the sun going down the darkness would keep you from seeing certain part's of the ride not in those tunnels. Not to mention how difficult it was to get in and out of the ride so those with disabilities could not ride it. I am glad I got to experience it. Tokyo still has a version of this ride that looks like it's under water and is just water and bubbles between two sheets of glass.

For those wondering where in the park this was located, (since this was the Florida Location) it's located at the Little Mermaid Attraction. While it's not the same as the original, there is a little Easter Egg in the waiting queue in Memorial to 20k Leagues Under The Sea. Just before you enter the building queue (the long way around), there are a few ponds you'll pass by. And it's engraved onto the rocks, and hidden on the rocks on our blind side (we don't have visuals until you get around and into the shaded area that leads into the ride). And the last pond you'll pass, you'll be facing the north side(?) of the pond, and there, you'll find a small engraving of the Nautilus there (which will be on your left). and to your right, there is a small island where there are abandoned piece of look-out windows that I believe could have been apart of the nautilus (I do not know if this fact is true, but it's my own head canon and would be excellent in theory, if they were to salvage any parts from the ships and place them as props). Keep an eye out whenever you next go to Disney World and you're waiting on the Ariel Attraction.

I aways sat at the port side of the boat when I rode this ride so this was confusing for me.

Is this James Mason's voice ?

I thought the exact same thing, but its another actor named Peter Reneday who did an impression of James Mason. pretty convincing though!

Peter Reneday is also famous as the voice of Master Splinter in the 1980's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as Henry in The Country Bear Jamboree and a few other attractions in Disney. :)

I have wondered what the ride was like since several of my friends speak highly of it. I must say I am not impressed. It looks boring to me :/

@@mocha_. Ya know what? Read your comment and decided to watch the video again. Must say I am a little more impressed this time around. I actually believe I'd like the ride. Too bad they removed it. What was the reason, do you know?
