@@grandy2875 I'm with you. I can't stand any cheese at all but hot melting cheese is the worse and the worst of all is the 'spew cheese' because that is exactly what it smells like to me. I am baffled/annoyed that if people say they don't like something say seafood for instance, people shrug and accept it. But if you say you don't like cheese they round on you and think you're nuts and insist you try any and every sort to the 'spew' stuff and insist you 'll find one you like. These same people then turn around and say they never drink plain milk which I love. And I'm also in my 60s.
Actually M&M’s have been pretty big here for a long time. Used to love having them since I was a kid and they were big long before I was born over 30 years ago.

We do have "French's yellow mustard", which confusingly is American. I actually prefer Australian mustard out of all the mustards. It almost seems like it just combines all the others, and maybe even adds a dash of mustard pickles as well.

There's quite a lot of American "foods" in Alice Springs supermarkets...Joint Defence facility Pine Gap, lots of Americans need to shop in the Alice. That was when I was there 20 years ago.
Allot of those items have been in Aus for a very long time. I'm in my 50's and have seen allot of this stuff going on for most of that time. The Philly cream cheese, the Kraft stinky cheese, M and M's, my faves are the peanut M and M's, I'd buy plain M and Ms before I'd buy Smarties, just because they are more crisp. The Nestle crunch bar, I used to love all nestles chocolate, seems way too sweet now. Reeces Peanut butter cups have been around here for a fair while too. Not a fan but do love most other peanut butter items. Never had the Skippy peanut butter. I am a peanut butter snob, only like our Kraft smooth or Aldi has peanut butter that I'm sure is Kraft, but in a generic jar. The ice cream I have seen as well as Ben and Jerry's. Ben and Jerry's has been available ever since video rental was a thing, so not just yesterday either. The sauces/syrups have been around a good amount of time too. The yellow mustard, the hot dogs, Poptarts,I wouldn't buy for my kids but I'd buy organic ones when I ordered supplements from Iherb or Vitacost in the us. Poptarts are extremely unhealthy. The Weight watchers and Lean Cuisine ready meals, I've also seen sweet baby rays BBQ sauce, not a fan at all but we have a recipe to make our own bbq sauce and ribs that is delicious. Can't always get the ribs in country NSW and they are very pricey now the sauces are available. I've also seen Dukes mayo which is full of soy oil and doesn't have allot of taste, compared to the Aussie style mayo's. I prefer Aussie Marshmallows. The Jumbo ones might be OK melted but not a fan on their own. Not a fan of any Starbucks but do love home made iced coffee. I don't drink coffee otherwise, only tea. Cheese is a big thing in Aus.I think it's the UK influence. Much like our drinking of tea. The English do have a bright orange cheese called Munster that is very good. So I don't think it's the colour that Aussies object to, it's that most of what Americans call cheese is the processed, In our family we call the processed cheese PVC (plastic) cheese. We never buy it. I watch allot of cooking channels and have noticed that Americans cook with it allot. In fact I have never seen people use the stuff we call cheese here, in the US or CA. We used to go to Costco when in Canberra and they have so much processed cheese and almost nothing I would buy or even call cheese. I think it's fine to disagree about food, of course we all like different things. We get used to eating things a certain way, depending on whats available where we live. No big deal.

Kraft Parmesan Powder Philadelphia Cream Cheese (Basically Kraft foods have been available here from their beginnings) Heinz American Mustard Weight Watchers Lean Cuisine Nestle is a Swiss company and everything you’ve ever had of theirs in the USA wasn’t the the real thing it was all licensed out by Nestle to other companies like Hershey and Ferrara for protectionist reasons including Crunch, Kit Kat and various other Nestle products, you eating Nestle Crunch in Australia is probably the first time you’ve ever had it. The same goes for… Mars we only had Forrest’s version which came from England originally and included the Mars bar and Maltesers and later when he was back in the US M&M’s before he took over Frank Mars’s company in 1964 and we got Milky Way and Snickers (which Forrest came up with while working for Mars Sr earlier on) technically we’ve had Mars and the Mars bar longer the US… And as for hot dogs they’ve been around in Australia for as long as I can remember… for me Don makes the best ones… it might be a Victorian thing…
I wouldn’t normally buy or eat American food as it is usually packed full of additives that are not normally allowed here. A lot more is watered down, best examples are compare Aussie ice cream and Aussie chocolate both much better. However like to try the orange cheese. It’s called American mustard because of the strength and taste which is uniquely American. If you taste English and French mustard you can see it is different. America did not invent democracy it started in Athens Greece 2,600 years ago. Then Britain in 1215.
My problem with American food, is the multitude of additives - mainly sugar. Australian foods don't have this plethora of things, but they are generally healthier for it
My favourite American food available in Australia is Millers Genuine Draft. I loved the long form TV commercials Millers used to run during the Eighties ( when I was posted in Hawaii )…..always ending in a group declaration that. “It’s Millers Time !” Cheers. PS…the Child Bride just reminded me that beer isn’t food. Well, I never. Could have knocked me down with a sledgehammer. I was always led to believe that every loaf of bread was an unrealised dream to become beer !
well most of what you've mentioned that's been popping up, have already popped ages ago for a while now, from tootsie rolls, airheads, skittles, taffys, almond joy, reese's peanut butter cups, hersheys kisses, m&ms, sour patch kids, starburst, sneakers.... like maybe more than 25 or 30 plus years now..... with mustards, there's something 12 standard types of recognised as best sellers in aus, and the way customers readily recognise mustard to identify is by using places with taste of unique ingredient (like honey mustard), as each unique taste are common claim version to their country's trait taste take of mustard, like french mustard is yellow colour but different taste. the same with english mustard, the same with australian mustard, hence why american mustard..... there's more like stubbs sauce, cinnamon toast.... and really staple really american taste the aussies specifically look for in supermarkets are ocean spray and dr peppers.....

To be honest, most of this rubbish could have stayed in the US. My American husband keeps buying the American peanut butter even though he doesn’t eat it. We have heaps of it because I personally can’t stand it, it’s so sweet. I’ve now educated him on the right peanut butter to buy, the one without any added sugar. It’s not more oily, you just need to mix the oil in because it rises to the top. I’ll use up the sugar laden American stuff in satays and curries over time. American mustard is labeled as American so we don’t get it mixed up with English or Dijon mustard.
When you mentioned the oily peanut butter you reminded me of the old Kraft peanut butter ad I used to watch on TV as a kid in the early 90's with the Texan rancher popping out of the peanut butter jar 😂. Thanks for bringing back some fond childhood memories for me 😁👍
My Dad used to work at Nestlè and on occasions, he would bring home some of the rejected chocolates that weren't wrapped properly, and crunch would be in the box and you're right it's a mood chocolate but still yummy at the same time 😋

Try SIMPLY Nuts by Bega. It is available in 3 varieties, smooth, crunchy, and extra crunchy. I've tried many brands of Peanut Butter, and at 72 I've had a lot of time to do so. Bega's is the best in my opinion.
In grocery stores, you will only find products related to food and drinks. That's the limitation- you have with grocery stores. However, when it comes to supermarket, the number of products increase as you include other daily-life items.
I miss Smarties and M&M is a poor substitute. The removable of somntop tier chocolate like Violet Crumble and Smarties. And the Allens ranke keeps shrinking
I love the Hans hotdogs!! We have a regular supply in the freezer which is always a treat when they come out. And like you, I never would have thought that way about hotdogs prior to living in the States. What I miss is, Jimmy Dean sausage for making sausage rolls, Little Debbie chocolate covered cakes, 100 Grand chocolate bars, crunchy Cheetos(not the fluffy kind), Klondike Bars, and lemon and blueberry muffins from Trader Joes. I also missed white chocolate frappes until I found a way to make them myself. It all has to do with white chocolate powder I buy from eBay. In the local Reject Shop, they have quite a lot of American goodies such as Twinkies, candy, and I even saw American coffee. It is amazing what you miss from home when you can't go to the shops and buy it. For close to 20 years I craved meat pies, dim sims and bread that didn't taste sweet like cake. If any Aussies live in the US, and need Arnott's biscuits, and other assorted foods, World Market have a pretty decent supply of Aussie things.

The yellow mustard is *delicious* I'm fine with about 95% of US imports, but I do draw the line at Starbucks. Foulest "coffee" I've ever tasted. It was like warmed up Big M Ice Coffee. I wonder if Skippy peanut butter was made by the same company that made Skippy cornflakes. We used to have Skippy cornflakes when I was a kid (I'm 57 now), but I haven't seen them in, like, forever.
M&Ms Nestle CRUNCH Kraft Parmesan Philly Cheese Weight Watchers meal Lean Cuisine arent new at all theyve have been here for years. Starbucks Hersheys Reeces (any peanut butter chocolate combo) nope never can cut it big time here. IMO.
Two years ago I went to Cole's in CBD Brisbane and was surprised to see Capt Crunch cereal and Twizzlers on International shelf. And seen American high sugar cereal boxes being sold for A$16 each at convenience stores - you can buy for under US $5 at local Walmart
Philadelphia cheese, crunch chocolate, M&Ms, Skippy peanut butter have been around forever. I know. I'm old. As Australians and adults, we firstly don't like having an obviously American interpretation of a pagan festival foisted on us by marketers going after kids to get them enthused about Halloween and all the kids think is it's all about getting free lollies but the marketer's ultimate aim is to sell crap and using the pester power of children to achieve it. That approach of marketing to children to get at their parent's money is morally wrong. It's the same sort of marketing undertaken in supermarkets where they have the cash register entries lined with lollies, chocolates and magazines aimed at children and displayed at the eye line of children. It's quiet despicable behaviour. That sort of marketing is literally intended to cause friction between the parent(s) and child(ren). It's literally reaching in and interfering, putting a barrier in place against the parent's responsibility to ensure their child(ren) eat well. You can avoid going down the chips and lolly aisle in the supermarket but you must go through the check out. Just horrible people made that up and those who continue the practice. The same applies to the marketing of Halloween in Australia. By the way, for those who don't know, Halloween is from the Gaelic pagan festival called Samhain.
When I moved from the U.S. 22 years ago, I was very surprised that the food I missed most was Grape-Nuts. I didn't even eat them a lot, but there is just nothing even similar here. There are at least 5 things that I buy regularly that I have to drive ten minutes to Winston Hills to their Woolies and Coles since they don't sell them at the Woolies and Coles here in Blacktown🤦😤 So you are spot on about how selective each store is.
I live in Wodonga and I’ve never heard of the American store. It’s funny that I’ve heard of it now from off of RU-vid, from an American’s channel who lives in Sydney but not from any locals who I know😂

I can’t even begin to understand the attraction of smores. Maybe it’s just because I can’t stand marshmallow. I’m not a big fan of heavily processed foods so most of these don’t appeal to me. But yellow mustard mixed with tomato sauce is great on a Bunnings snag. As you say a lot of it comes down to what you grew up with. I find most American foods too sweet but it’s good to see variety on store shelves.
Skippy peanut butter is the best. I absolutely love American peanut butter and buy the big tub from Costco. I had no idea that WW and Lean Cuisine are American, the things you learn. I'm so glad you mentioned that Bubly water here tastes different to the ones in America. I tried it here, wasn't a fan, and couldn't understand the hype. Now l know it tastes different, which makes more sense 👍
I doubt you'd find the Starbucks drinks here in Melbourne. At least not in areas that aren't particularly catering to tourists. (Starbucks crashed hard here in Melbourne).
I haven't seen Starbucks packaged drinks however the local supermarkets have Starbucks capsules for coffee machines. This is in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne not the city centre.

It's yellow mustard in the US and that is the mustard probably most widely consumed. We only associate such bright yellow mustard with the US. So for us, yellow mustard is synonymous with the US and to be used as we imagine Americans might use it. And re Philly cheese, it is not at all surprising that Australians know the cheese above Philly's historical significance. And it's a great cheese. But mention of hoagies will likely be met with a completely blank look.
I actually like the orange processed cheese from McDonald's and Hungry Jack's. I remember as a kid making home made burgers and being upset the cheese wasn't the same as Hungry Jack's cheese...I actually hate our processed cheese slices here in Australia....they taste like salty milk paste. Still hard to find burger cheese too...only Costco had it...but it's always sold out. Keep in mind all "US" products sold in Australia have different ingredients to pass Australian standards. American mustard has been available for over 40 years. Actually the only products that are new are Reese"s, Hersheys, those particular marshmallows, bubly and starbucks drinks. The rest have always been here for decades...m&m's since the 80's
I've noticed Schofield Coles and Woolies has a lot more international offerings, probably because they are bigger stores and the area has new housing so younger families. Some of the items you mentioned have been in Oz for decades, e.g. Philadelphia cream cheese, Kraft Parmesan, Lean Cuisine, WW, Crunch and M&Ms, as I recall eating them as a kid in the 80s. Pop Tarts definitely had a lot more available flavours in Oz back in the 90s, though others here may have had them earlier than that.
Everything you said is correct but the Weight Watchers and Lean Cuisine stuff you originally had to sign up with the company and they'd deliver it to your house hence their old adverts with the phone number, iirc it was the late 80s or very early 90s when they started selling their meals in the supermarkets
@@tolgahk84 I didn't say it was only from the supermarket but it has been here in some form. Friends of my mum's used to sell a lot of the old diet products back in the 80s, so they have been around a long time. WW started in Australia in 1969.

Woolies has had a Mexican cheese blend for a few years now. The Chipotle cheese makes sense and is good. It's the regular bright orange coloured sliced cheese in burgers and stuff that makes no sense. Gosh the Philadelphia cream cheese reminds me of childhood when my nan would make cheesecakes. Hershey's chocolates are everywhere in Woolies and Coles and IGA. Not sure about the crackers. Are British digestives similar? We definitely have those. Starsucks you can keep haha. But that being said I also don't like any of the Aussie brand pre made sweet "coffee" drinks. Rather just have an iced coffee from a local cafe. I don't remember dinonuggets as a kid but we have those smiley face potato thingies. The UK has those too. M&Ms have been around here forever, there's more collabs with them the last few years though. There's also a lot of Ben and jerrys ice-cream here but it's expensive due to import. Pop tarts have been around since the 80s I believe. Yeah our peanut butter is less sugary which I like tbh. As I'm a savoury girl! Best peanut butter imo might be NZ brand fix and fogg. They're more natural but full of flavour. You should check them out in Woolies. Aside from the regular they have a bunch of flavours. Including chocolate and peanut spread which is a perfect sweet and salty. They also have a peanut butter and jelly and a granola butter. So so many flavours.
I used to like skippy, but since I tried pic's peanut butter on a trip to NZ I have gotten hooked on it. I don't know what they do differently, but unlike all the other "natural" peanut butters, it just taste great. I was excited when they became more widely available in Australia. Have you tried it? Actually in terms of philly cream cheese, it tastes so different to me than American philly cream cheese that I just can't eat it. On passover some kosher stores and Coles and Woolies in very Jewish areas import cream cheese from America because they don't make kosher for passover cream cheese in Australia as I guess demand isn't high enough to do a special run, and even though it is from a different brand than philadelphia, it tastes so much more like American philly than Australian philly does. It is quite expensive, but I sometimes stock up a bit because a bagel with good cream cheese is just so good.
We're not like Europe, where they just ban things outright. We want our Expats like yourself and international tourists to feel comfortable over here. We're also aware that sometimes that taste of home can make people feel a little less homesick. We know that food products that are made in America aren't good for us, so they're an occasional treat. Personally, I've been enjoying Reece's Peanutbutter Cups for years. I'm well aware that Twizzlers aren't that great, but I still like them every now and then.
If they have additives that producers here in Australia cannot use bc they are banned in Australia then they have no right allowing America to export products which have these additives in them, here. That is just crazy and, I hope it isn’t true. I was under the assumption that American made products need to get rid of these banned additives to sell to the international market.
You're right when you talk about big differences in the major supermarkets in Australia. They vary hugely based on the demographics of the particular location. Not merely on the range and brands of products but a I so on how they're presented to shoppers. And the prices of the products. Where I live in regional Victoria, you won't see most of the products on your list here. Plus, Coles did introduce Starbucks coffees a few years ago. First it was featured big tine on the shelves Then it was relegated small space, top shelf hard to reach, always on special. Now, it's not there at all. The shoppers didn't like Starbuck's coffees. And as you already have experienced Thanksgiving is purely an American tradition and Halloween is hard to sell and limited traction. The vast majority of Australians are very happy about this. We don't really want to be Little Britains or Mini Americans. We prefer to simply be Aus'strayans...😊😊.😊.
I was curious about Reese's, I bought one now bear in mind I'm not into peanuts. Had one bite spat it into the bin, quickly followed by the Reesce's pack. Still prefer my peanuts raw or in satay sauce
American mustard and there is English mustard which is stronger and darker yellow and i think ALDI has American style peanut butter or at least it is avail;able on occasion

Orange cheese seems just sooooo wrong. Starbucks and fancy in the same sentence LOL!! M & M been around for many years, smarties just been around forever so guess that is why more popular. Reese’s peanut butter cups and pieces are everywhere now, which is great because I like them, but for whatever reason I still see American peanut butter as an abomination. It’s not health reasons because I love Hostess Twinkies and Cupcakes, even if they’re so processed they don’t taste like food. Would love to try the Louisiana chicken pieces with Frank’s hot sauce.

That old school parmesan cheese has always been available since I was like 6 and I'm 34 now 😅 bubly water is disgusting It tastes like vinegar. M&ms have been around for donkeys years too.
I started buying the Hirscheys strawberry syrup since 2020 as I can't find Cottees strawberry topping any more; not sure about the Coles brand... I prefer hot english mustard to american mustard. Didn't know that grated parmesan cheese was specifically american; have eaten since day dot. I suspect that aussie kids are not taught how american democracy was born; I wasn't. Therefore, we don't really know the role that Philadelphia played in US history.
