I'm retired and finally have the time to learn to play differently from the last 50 years when I only played intermittently and with a pick. I suffered a mild stroke a few years ago that affected my right side, this made playing with a pick impossible. I tried fingerpicking as I could anchor my right hand on the guitar. I discovered this guy and utube Recently. This has renewed my enthusiasm for guitar, I am so grateful this has changed my life for the better. Many thanks to you all.

I just started my guitar path in April 2020 at the age of 57. I wanted to go down the travis picking path and this is exactly the exercises I need! I'm a firm believer in muscle memory exercises and this will help a lot! Your process is awesome! Thank you!!!
I am amazed and impressed with this young man. I can tell from his subtle accent that he is at least bilingual (or trilingual et cetera), but he actually expresses himself better and more clearly in American English than 99% of the teachers on YT. And even more impressive is that his presentation is thorough and well-organized. No slick studio or wall covered with $10,000 guitars, just a living room couch with dogs on it combined with 100% rock-solid substance and content. Amazing guy. Whatever program this guy is selling, I'm going to buy it if only to help him out. He is someone who should be promoted on YT.
I spent a few hours working with this 1 hour lesson and practicing. While I anticipate there's still a lifetime of work before I will ever master this technique, it's pretty obvious to me that before long, I'll be incorporating this into my playing. This is a well organized worthwhile lesson and worth the time and blister on your thumb.
Hands down, best Travis Picking tutorial on RU-vid. As someone mentions, you don't just teach patterns, but how to think in Travis Picking. You are a phenomenal, natural teacher. Thanks so much for doing this for us all.
Three weeks ago I couldn't do anything but the most rudimentary fingerpicking, and it was very, very weak and sloppy. In that time I've gone through and practiced all the exercises in this video, and now I can do all of them pretty damn well, and I even arranged a Travis picking solo for I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry. Nothing is better than the feeling of accomplishment after leveling up in your craft! Thank you Assaf! You're an incredible teacher!
A couple of comments....first off I love the interaction w/ Lick & Riff, great stuff :) You obviously are a gifted teacher....I need no more proof other than the fact that I actually sat down for an hour & watched the entire video. Travis picking is my thing, I'm determined to master it in my lifetime. The next to last exercise sounded an awful lot like one of the licks in WIndy & Warm, a John D. Loudermilk tune as arranged & played by Doc Watson. I've always loved that particular arrangement. I'm grateful there are ppl like yourself on the internet that give so much of themselves to help ppl like me learn to play. Thanks very much!
i love this video this guy gives the best advise for beginners like me well there is a thing i really wana tell you about is ELUMPA SIMPLE GUITAR ALCHEMIST - search google if you want it really helped me as a young guitar player
Wow.. Good job dude 👌👏 Thanks for your patience and despite some confusion in explaining while demonstrating there was an understanding by the listener I guess, kinda," it's ok" feel dude..Quite understandable..👍The entire video of one hour is quite a good start for Travis pick beginners undoubtedly..👏 Thanks so much dude..🙏 Please keep it up..👍( If I am right, sometimes there is a swing* pattern in your demo and at times in straight rhythm* as well.. Anyway, quite understandable dude..👍) Warm cheers..😊 God bless..🙏🎸🎶😊
I finally finished! It took 2 weeks of bookmarking and learning a pattern here and there. This is an amazing video tutorial. The exercises progress in difficulty beautifully! Thank you for an awesome lesson!
This guys is awesome. I thought it was going to take me a few weeks to learn Travis Picking, I mastered the first 24 minutes in two days....The rest followed within four days after that....
Fantastic teaching. What patience and enthusiasm. Thanks to you and all the other great guys and gals who share their knowledge and expertise online. Thousands of us mere mortals are so very grateful. Many, many thanks.
Wicked introduction to travis picking, just getting into finger style after years of playing with a pick, this is an ace lesson from a generous teacher, well done sir.
I LOVE these exercises! their challenging, BUT just enough to be fun and not overwhelming! i keep coming back better each time, witch keeps me eager to play! THANK YOU!
Who is down thumbing this video? The cut throat youtube guitar teaching competition? This is a beginner to advanced video. I keep coming back to this and every time I work on this I get better at Travis picking. This one video is many many hours of practice for anyone relatively new to travis picking. Great work!
What are the others? Just starting to learn Travis Picking (played guitar for almost 50 years but never tackled fingerstyle picking. This guy is GREAT! So excited to start learning.
You have such a clear passion for the guitar. It's why you are my favorite! I see pure joy in your eyes when you talk about playing the guitar and it's awesome!
Gotta say you always surprise me with your lessons, you come across so casual. Your lessons are very educational, and your great natural instructor. Thank you so much, I’m a still trying to master Travis picking, I love it for all types of music, it’s so versatile.
I see this post is from 8 years ago and I'm 64 and been playing since I was 11. Almost through Aaron Shearers first book on classical and have been fingerpicking for a couple years now. I do some Travis picking but I'm hoping this will get my playing even better. I'm still messing with the first maybe 10 measures of the fish...lol...been able to play mood for a day for years. Most of all I love your style of teaching. You are very personable and sincere. Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge. Oh, and another thing. Doing classical I never use a pick and everyone else teaching Merle's style uses a thumpick so I'm glad you dont. I dont think Chet Atkins gets enough notoriety from this picking style as I think he actually started it, among other things. Thanks again.
Thank you very much for your time and effort putting this video together. I have been researching 'travis picking' lessons on youtube for months. Yours is the most comprehensive and progressive teaching technique that I've found and I am very grateful. Thank you so much for developing this tutorial into a way that advances slowly and trains muscle memory without the player (me) even realizing it! Again, thank you very, very much.
This is a fantastic lesson because you don’t just teach patterns, but-more importantly-how to think in Travis Picking. I’ve become more interested in acoustic playing, lately, and I’m going to commit to working on these exercises a little every day until I can do it as fluently as I can play electric guitar with a pick.
Iv'e NEVER in my life have ever realized the importance of fingerpickin the way it is taught by you. I am literally sweating to learn and practice this tecnique. I hope i can master it before i break down. Thank you for the lesson. Awesome teacher.
This his great. For 22 years my old Applause "Summer Series" was somewhere at home... never played on it. I play for 3 year the Uke. I saw your exercise and "fingerpicked up" my old guitar.... thx! Xavier /Begium/Europe
I want to know what these 47 people didnt like about this video. This guy is amazing. Best pacing for a tutorial by far on youtube. Showing the tabs as well, and a great personality that makes this lesson intuitive and fun to watch
I have been trying to Travis pick for around six months now. I Love Chet Atkins (Mr Guitar), Jerry Reed, Merle Travis, Tommy E to name only a few (Greats) off this style of guitar playing. So i have been trying different sites on you tube but got no where with regards to other teachers. Then bam... I saw your page and came across this video. Ya Dancer!!!(Scottish saying;)). Your style and personality make it easy for me to follow your instructions. Also love the way you encourage your students to find the own style around your arrangements and to go with it!! Class... Take a bow sir:) I have been at this video for only two days and i feel i have improved so much in such a short time! Something in my head just seems to have clicked and everything seems so much clearer. So i am very happy! I was told while learning the guitar that i would get to the point. Where everything would click in to place... But never believed i was capable of Travis picking. So Thank You LnR. P.s I have been trying to learn Anji by Bert Janch, not the original Davy Graham version. I will email you to see if it is possible? Thanks again :-) Steve Fae Scotland
30 minutes ago I didn't even know what Travis picking was, but thanks to this video I am actually getting it down pretty quick! Thanks for the help man your an incredible guitarist!
I've watched a lot of Travis picking tutorials, but this is so much better. Clear, methodical and so well-presented in a way that most of us need for effective learning. You may have ADHD but this has not in any way affected your ability to teach at all. It may actually help. That's a well played acoustic. And if it's well played then it's well loved. Thanks again, this has really helped a lot. Disclaimer: No dogs were harmed in the making of this video! 😀 Greetings from Scotland. 👍
I do a little finger picking but don't know the Travis style. However, I've watched some of his videos and he was awesome to watch. I love this tutorial because he really breaks it down so you can understand it. Can't wait to add learn this style of fingerpicking.
I stumbled across this by accident, and remained transfixed for the entire video, can't wait to get the guitar out now, you are a born teacher. thanks, liked and subscribed, can't wait to check out your other stuff
Thanks so much for the vid man! I've tried to get my feet wet with travis picking before with little luck, but this step by step ramp up is the most logical and enlightening approach I've come across by far! Keep up the good work!
I have been in the wilderness with Travis picking for years...iv tried to just play the notes that I felt were right(they weren’t) iv had to go back to basics after playing 30 years of metal...love Chet Atkins...your lesson has really opened my eyes man I thank you sooo much...greetings from 🏴 Scotland...great lesson please continue them I need to master this technique...I watch Tommy Emmanuel but he does not break it down like this...👍
I've been playing for 35 years and I still learned some worthwhile things; I like your style too! Thanks for taking the time and effort, it's appreciated.......
This is a terrific set of Travis picking exercises that will definitely improve your ability. Better instruction than I've found in any books from the best guitar teacher online.
It took me about 2 or 3 days to figure out this style of travis picking. Your tutorial helped out alot, My thumb is completely forgotten and I use 4 fingers on my right hand while Picking instead of 2.
I would like to say that you were a insurmountable help to me, i've finally got travis picking down thanks to you. Before i seen this video it sounded impossible to play, and i really loved that two-guitar illusion of sound travis picking made. I thought, when i first tried it on my own, i'll never get it down but thanks to your slow, competent advice i can finally play Windy and Warm and it feels just so great that ive accomplished this huge feat in my guitaring journey. Honestly i cant thank you more enough, shoutout from South Wales!
Just wanted to thank you for uploading this video. Big fan of Justin Townes Earle and Shakey Graves.Been travispicking for 30 days. Definitely starting to master my craft thanks to this great video. Thank you so much.
was always interested in Finger picking struggled a lot to learn it but now with these lessons finding it easy to lean , however have to practice to be excellent.... you are excellent
Thanks for the lesson. I happened upon this video without even knowing what travis picking is, and after having worked through some of these exercises, guitar playing became a lot more fun for me. I'm finding it to be a very relaxing style. Great stuff!
Sounds great. Much gratitude and many appreciation for this video. When I play, I like to just close my eyes and let it it flow from the heart/soul and magic starts happening. My emotions and feeling then manifest into the physical in the form of healing creative music. Even if its just a single note or two, I try to always remember to manifest the sound/vibration from the heart, with feeling. The heart actually resonates in the "C" note range in 432hz. When your tuned a=432hz to c you can feel the healing vibrations in your heart space. Vibration has the ability to restructure the molecular structure of water down to a sub-atomic level. When viewed under a microscope 432hz waves that have passed thru water form intricate patterns of sacred geometry. Sacred geometry also has the ability to create energy/vibration...but that's another subject. Vibrationally the natural rhythms of the planets/universe align with the 432hz tuning system. It's harmonically in perfect resonance creating the sound of light.
+NozaOz OK...thanks for checking on me. I'm going to try harder and work on it regularly. I'm a Zen Buddhist so hopefully this will all come to me at once like sudden enlightenment.
+Robert Hess Thank you. I really appreciate all the time you put into offering this for free. So many musicians are offering instruction for monthly or annual fees. I understand this. Everyone needs to make a living but for old people like me who live on SS we have very limited money to spend. Thanks again for going above and beyond. You are truly a kind person.
Hey Rob, This is all about practice, practice and practice. Jst stick with the one part till you have got it perfect then move onto the next. This can take years to learn so Jst keep playing. Peace 👍🏽
Great lessons just what I have been looking for. Never touched a guitar due to my inability to turn my wrists. Stumbled across playing guitar flat and using a slide. Going to practice the finger picking and see where it takes me. Being left handed makes it harder to follow, but he makes the lesson nice and simple and enjoyable.
This has taught me so much! At first I was trying to teach myself but I got no where with it in one night watching this I learned more than in months by myself
Great lessons here!! I've been trying to get into Travis picking for years, even sat down with a few so called guitar teachers. Your video brakes it down better then anything else out there. Thanks a million for finally setting me in the write direction!
Like Mark Knopfler said: It was a breakthrough point for him to learn that kind of thing. Of course, I'm not saying to pick like he does, but you definitely helped me a lot to come closer! Thanks so much!
I am so glad to found this video, i am beginner in country style. Now i am going to practice every day thank bro... you are the best. Saludos desde Perú
Love how you keep erging us to improvise with these tabs. it does make you realise you don't need to copy lessons note for note. I am a describer and once christmas is out the way I'm sure I can afford to donate a little something. thanks for the lessons keep up the good work
Hey man. Thanks so much for taking the time and making these lessons. You really break it down so it is simple also for beginners. You also smile a lot, which shows you love what you do and share your passion with people all around the world.Once again, thanks!
`Thank you so much for the excellent breakdown and the awesome exercises. I had watched over 20 other lessons, only to finish really confused and discouraged, but thanks to you I FINALLY GET IT! I'll be practicing like crazy now to conquer this amazing style!
Hey, this is good stuff man. I use many You Tubes to learn, this is one of my favorites, it's definitely one of the best Travis picking tutorials in my opinion.
Learning that I should.. 'accentuate the second note in the beat' was a "Aha" moment for me, in my learning journey. - Thanks for changing my (Travis-picking) life 😊
Thank you very much for this excellent lesson on finger picking Assaf. It is quite obvious that you are an accomplished player along with an excellent knowledge of music. Thank you.
