My cat fact is that hot weather can cause them to make an appetite suppressing hormone. This is because they don't need energy to keep warm. We had an uncomfortably hot heat wave here in the UK last summer. My cat hid in the shade at the bottom of the garden and didn't eat for 5 days. I was very worried but he started eating again as normal as soon as the weather cooled down.

@@carolestes5869 he chose the shady part of the garden because it was cooler than inside the house. I brought food and water to where he chose to camp out. He only drank the water. I researched his unusual behaviour during our unusual heat wave and discovered about this hormone. I made an appointment with the vet because I was worried about his loss of appetite but the the weather returned to normal the day before and he started eating again as soon as it cooled down. The vet said it was not unheard of and totally natural and that I had done everything right and that there was nothing else I should have done and that he was perfectly fine. I have owned several cats, and as you can see I am a responsible cat owner - so you don't need to shout at me. I just wanted to share what I had learned because I thought it might be of interest to other cat owners. Now I'm regretting it because of your inappropriately aggressive reaction.

@@nathanaelsmith3553 yes that was an inappropriate comment. many responsible cat lovers enjoy taking their cats outside. as long as you have the right situation and you know they can't or won't run off. I'd never let my cat out without me being there with them. they're quick tho. when one of my cats was in training to stay in the yard, I would turn my head for 2 seconds and he was gone, off property, headed away somewhere else, my little explorer. he was old though, not as alert, and this was about his 10th home. I moved a lot for a few years, even overseas for 3 yrs one time. they went wherever I went. not sure I would do that again. it was hard for them as for me, except they always had me and me them. that's an interesting observation you made about how extreme temperatures can affect their appetites. how hot did it get?

@@inthetwinklingofaneye I just found it by searching online. I've always let my cats come and go in and out as they please once they are old enough. If I lived near a busy road or in a block of flats or somewhere without a garden I wouldn't have a cat at all. I personally think it's cruel to keep them indoors all the time. Weirdly, my cat prefers sitting on my lap in the living room with both the back and front doors open. He likes being indoors but he also wants access to his territory outside. That's ok in summer but a real pain when it's cold!

@@inthetwinklingofaneye the hottest it got in the UK was 40 Celsius. It reached 35 where I was. This isn't so hot for other countries but we're not used to it here. My modern house is built to keep heat in and not let heat out - it's a heat trap. I work from home but had to take the day off because I was just melting.

It may be due to your cat mimicking your actions. Cats generally like to be involved in whatever their owner is doing, and trying out out their human's food is definitely one of them!
