20 Circus Freaks That Actually Existed! 

They might be called a Freak but yet they're actually still humans due to they are human beings. It's actually making a living and educate people based on their own disabilities. Joseph Merrick aka the Elephant Man and Schlitzie are actually the best well known performers.

There are people like them today,so FREAKS NO. Just human.

Several were exploited and treated cruelty.

People call it exploitation now. But it was a way to make a living and to educate people about coping with disabilities.

The freak show was my favorite part of the county and state fair. Most of the freaks were fake, but some were real. I was fortunate to meet Sealo, who had no arms but hands that came out of his shoulders. A really nice guy who autographed his pictures. He seemed very happy to travel and earn his own living.

I live with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. It affects my joints, too. They sublux and dislocate at any given moment. It's extremely painful.

According to Wikipedia, Myrtle Corbin had Dipygus, not a vestigial or parasitic twin. As for Edward Mordrake, there are people born with a parasitic twin attached to the head, or a cranium that did not form properly and they ended up developing two faces, he is an urban legend.

Love the movie Freaks! Prince Radian died 2 years after the movie and had 5 kids! In the movie, Angelo Rossitto (Angeleno) played Master/Blaster in Mad Max’s Thunderdome! Did anyone notice that when talking about Edward Mordrake & Lionel the Lion Guy, they used a take of the dance scene from A Knight’s Tale when talking about Royalty? Lol Also you showed the Hilton Twins as Felix Wehrle..

he really cared for Julia, they she had a baby like her made them into mummy's and took them on tour, 100 years later she is found in storage late 1960s and has now been properly buried 😔

Sad they're called freaks they're not

Had a friend many years ago, his nickname was Gorilla, such a sweet guy. Within the cast, of "Freaks" and all of the side shows around the world l think the thing to admire is they truly did all accept each other as they were. There will always be some who want to make money off the pain of others. BUT we as humans do not have to accept the cruelty inflicted by them whether it's to other humans or to animals. Back then there was no unemployment benefits, royalty would go to insane asylums and watch the patients or would pay them to be pets at their Orgies. So being in a side show was one of the safer more controlled by them personally situations where they had regular meals, somewhere safe to sleep and so they could at least earn their own money, especially at a time when some saw them as barely human. I love the Movie “Freaks”. In my youth we had “sideshows”. I was too young, but my mom ran into a group of the performers at the local bar during the town carnival. She saw a “frog man”. Half man and half frog. She said it was real.

Wow! The Half-Man is my new HERO! talk about an indomitable spirit! I have always wanted to see someone with Hypertrichosis, or as they were called, Wolf Man. I find these genetic atavisms to be so interesting. The human body is truly an amazing thing. These folks know the true meaning of what it is to live life to the fullest. To be able to embrace the lot they were given, and to make the most of it! Truly amazing individuals!

Social security money didn’t exist in those time for disabled people, they had to make a leaving somehow, just hope they had nice and caring people in their personal life, friends and some happiness.

These people were actually quite intelligent despite what the rest of the world thought. The study of genetic mutation fascinates me.

At that time it was the only way for people like them to be able to make a living and some did very well instead of them being put in homes

To me if the people are performing on their own free will & causes no harm, I think anyone who's extraordinarily unique should be able to show the world who they're proud to be.

I remember Fritzie from when I was a kid and saw "freaks" on TV. Ever since the 60's Fritzie has been my favorite "special" being. It's crazy to think this parading of standouts today would never be allowed, nor tolerated. With that, I'm glad they had a way to use their uniqueness to their advantage if THEY wanted to.

Some are real , some are fake.

I find Daisy and Violet Hilton exceptional in the sense that they each seemed to have a complete physiology...different yet strangely normal. I'm guessing they would be excellent candidates for a separation technique. I think they probably would not have wanted that as their uniqueness gave them fame and a source of income.

The Freaks movie is famous, including the fact that they were real "freaks", where the real monsters were "normal" peoples. Some were really amazing. Elephant man was a famous, but very sad movie, in the 80's. John merick had a sad end, with suicide, just by laying his head for sleeping like a normal person, but the weight of his deformties killed him.

I love visiting sideshows as a youth and found it extraordinary, fascinating, interesting and mind boggling.

I remember seeing the movie freak show on tv when I was a little girl. In my neighborhood also at that time there was a little boy that only had the upper part of his body. He could ride a skateboard and a bicycle. I sometimes wonder what happened to him.

These people WERE exploited. Would you do that to your child! Theses parents were monsters.

So many get upset with freak shows but who would hire these people? Would anyone want someone who looked like these people watching their children? Being a doctor? Teacher? Wound toy Vote for someone different to run a country? Even today in 2023 people still stare at the short school bus ( my son rides one to school) people in wheelchairs, use crutches and so on. These shows gave people jobs, homes and a community where they weren’t judged among peers.

So very sad how they used to use disabled people to view as specimens so very sad, the human nature

The sideshows keep them employed. That's how they made their money. In my opinion, it's better to get paid instead of in the world where they can look at you for free.

I MUST comment on the portion about Joseph Merrick.... The article says he had Proteus Syndrome OR Neurofibromatosis. It has been established he DID have Proteus Syndrome, .... However... He very likely Did NOT have NF1. For many decades it WAS believed he had NF1. NF1 DOES sometimes cause abnormal growth of tissues, it rarely causes the type of bony growth Joseph had. I also have NF1... I have thousands of tumors,

I have an uncanny ability to notice things others usually don't and I made an observation that I believe is significant. All of these people were born and lived during the same era. Late 1800's to around 1907 which leads me to believe that their afflictions weren't merely extremely rare conditions; they were the result of exposure to something or ingestion of something. Although they're all different, they had many things in common like the ape woman, lion man, the woolly girl, the bird lady and the bearded lady. Then there's the elephant man and the lady with the giant legs and feet. The man and the woman who were both born with no limbs, the conjoined twins and a lady with 4legs. Rubber man, Horse man and skeleton man. There's too many similarities in too short amount of time; their mothers were exposed to something nasty that caused these severe birth defects, I have no doubt they weren't freaks of nature, they were victims of ignorance. Bird lady and horned guy..... definitely not a fluke, these people were victims of negligence and/or ignorance.
