Ella Harper
Ella Harper was born in Hendersonville, Tennessee, shortly after the Civil War, with an unusual disease that caused her legs to bend backward, which turned her into a spectacle. She preferred walking on all fours rather than two, and this, combined with America's disgusting love for sideshow "freaks," was enough to make her a circus attraction. Known as the "Camel Girl," she drew thousands of stares. W.H. Harris, an ambitious showman, was anxious to have the most diverse roster of "freaks" possible and, upon hearing of Harper, offered her a hefty payment to sign with him. Ella Harper earned $200 a week as a featured attraction in Harris' Nickel Plate Circus, which is roughly $5,000 today.
This enabled her to find a home while also pursuing a profitable career. Her career, on the other hand, frequently humiliated her. Aside from the obnoxious term "Camel Girl," Harper was also shoved onstage with a real camel, and paying viewers were encouraged to marvel at the similarities. Harper was adamant about quitting and ultimately, after a year’s worth of weekly $200 payments, she did. Ella Harper's post-circus activities are unknown, but it is thought that she pursued education and returned to her native home immediately after quitting the freak show circuit. Tragic events seemed to follow her, when their father died in a house fire in 1890, and Harper's brother Willie died roughly five years later.
The Siamese Twins
Chun and I were born in Siam, now Thailand, in 1811, with a four-inch band of flesh connecting them at the chest. Chang and Eng, as they became known in the West, left Siam as teenagers to pursue a career displaying their physical abnormality. The brothers quickly became objects of fascination, and their personal lives became a source of speculation. For more than a decade, the "Siamese Twins" performed in front of royalty, elite medical specialists, and public audiences throughout Europe and the Americas.
By the 1830s, Chang and Eng had become household names, so well-known that future conjoined twins would be dubbed "Siamese Twins." For centuries, they have served as inspiration for poems, plays, novels, and biographies. They are relevant in current discussions of the nineteenth-century South, race, popular culture, Asian studies, and disability studies as Asian immigrants to the southern United States, enslavers, showmen, and human curiosities.

I know it seems quite exploiting of disabled people, but in those times, disabled people in regular society would get no help or benefits from the government, and they would still be stared at and ostracised in society. Being part of a freak show, (although obviously still stared at) they would have been looked after, and paid a wage far above the average working class citizen. Some stars of the freak shows of the time, lived and retired quite wealthy. It made their life far better than if they didn't join the circus.

Yeah 100% correct. People in the comments are looking at these events with a "Modern" view of the world. But back then these people were making far more money than 99% of the people who came to see them. While it is sad to think about the hardships they endured. These freak shows gave these people a way to earn an income they could never have achieved left to themselves. And they were surrounded by other people who shared common struggles. People today simply can't imagine what life for everyone was like back in those times. And how hard life in general was for most people. Especially factory workers and farmers. Disabled people were at the mercy of family and neighbors.
@gutz323
@gutz323 2 месяца назад
@@Soulessdeeds yes! Also being disabled, or having a disabled child or family member was generally stigmatised. Many were got rid off at birth. These people ended up working with another group of people, that was more like a family to them, they were not judged, and looked after each other. This option, although in todays society, not ideal, it was a perfect place for them in society, and far better than any other option they had.

Years ago I read an article about the so called circus freaks. In the article a number of them were sad about the end of an era that provided them with employment. Thankfully, today, we have more medical options for those afflicted with abnormal conditions. Example: the Siamese Twins were conjoined only by skin...not organs.
@Dion-rz3fz
@Dion-rz3fz 3 месяца назад
You might want to research that again. I read a book about the Siamese Twins, and I am almost sure there was more than skin in that band. I think they actually could have separated them, even back then, if it had truly just been skin.

@@user-io7kl7io6j I agree. I have seen videos online of people who are currently alive, that have severe deformities and odd syndromes which cause abnormalities. Many have Go Fund Me types of appeals, and I am sure government help. I find it interesting though that these same people would be making fortunes in some of the circuses and carnivals of former times. Now, due to political correctness they are relegated to begging on Go Fund Me sites, and living off the dole. I guess the do-gooders can sit back and be happy now for what they accomplished! Taking good livings away from these people, and now they can be in institutions, or just be stared at on the street, without getting any money for it! SMH

I applaud them for their compassion. I have seen the movie "Freaks" many times, it's a favorite. What I love most about it is that I think it's impossible to watch the movie and NOT see the "freaks" as absolutely being completely the same as anyone else. In fact, I often perceive them as superior, since they do things which most of us take completely for granted as well or better than most of us are able in spite of their differences. (Prince Randian comes to mind, rolling and lighting his own cigarettes). I understand how the film would be controversial, but I also don't see how anyone could watch it and not feel the utmost respect for these people. You don't feel sorry for them or see them as anything other than the humans they are. I love that American Horror Story did the "Freak Show" season as an homage to the film.

"Obnoxious" "disgusting" and such terms to describe the viewing public are a bit unfair. People in history should not be judged through today's prism and values. That is always a mistake if you really want an honest understanding of an event. You can find interviews with "freaks", who were forced into retirement in the 1960s, when the public demanded the removal of this kind of exhibition. Many were angry and sad that their only means of employment was taken from them and they were then force to go on government relief. Many had enjoyed gainful employment through the circus and became quite wealthy, got to travel, and a few were even treated as celebrities (Tom Thumb was a favorite guest of Queen Victoria). (Mistreatment and cruelty are a different subject, and of course cannot be excused in any time frame.) One thing we can agree on is that medical abilities have advanced greatly in the field of birth defects, and many can be corrected.

that sounds inefficient. So how's your marriage. It's good other than his brother always having to hang around with us. We can't even have a moment of privacy. Even when we're in bed together he's always hanging around.

Frances O'Connor (pretty woman with no arms) was part of the Park Belmont Amusement Park (in Montreal, Canada) in Pete Cortes Sideshows in the 50's. 10 years later at the Belmont Park once again (I worked there in the late 60's) Schlitzie (Pinhead) was part of the Sam Alexander's Sideshow (also known as the Man with 2 faces). Sam Alexander who was not only the manager of the Sideshow, but younger he was also an sideshow attraction who was removing his chirurgical mask ( in private only for 1$). That allowed him to get 7 face's operations who was destroyed by an explosion. Saw the guy every day at work while I was operating the Paratrooper ride. I've never been interested to see how he looked like. To tell the truth I was scared. One of my co-worker did but 50 years later he still a bit in shock when he think about that.
