I first saw Blood Simple in 1985 when it was released on VHS and it blew me away, I was 16 and working in a video rental store. Excellent choice for #1.
RockNRolla is my JAM!!! I love that movie, and Lord Of War is so freakin good! The Weather Man came out close to LOW, and Nicolas Cage is fantastic in both of them. The Weather Man is very underrated!
Good call on Blood Simple! I watched this back in 85 and knew it would be a classic! Definately check it out. Fyi, the feme fatal is a young Francis Mcdormand who starred in the movie Fargo.
You haven't mentioned it, so I guess you may not know: "From Hell" is pretty much a remake of the 79 "Murder by Decree" starring Christopher Plummer. Check it out, I like both...
Just to let you know "From Hell" is based on the Alan Moore graphic novel so was never intended to be a "based on a true story" kind of film but instead telling a fictional story with a true story as it's backdrop, and yes "Paris, Texas" is in my all time top ten, and that Ry Cooder score is haunting
I was just about to post same! Utterly incredible graphic novel and a must read. The film is only peripherally linked I thought. Good movie but Moore’s work here is essential.
have to agree, but also look at the others of his time, Dave Gibbons, Frank Miller, Grant Morrison and Neil Gaiman (before he got woke) the 80's and 90's were a golden age for comics, a time when graphic novels became a thing and not just "comics are for kids" but an art to be respected, so many great stories told without the need to pander to some demographic, MAKE COMICS GREAT AGAIN
@@shauldavid841 exactly what I was saying, the fact it was based on a work of fiction, Alan Moore never claimed historical accuracy, it was always a fictional story with a factual background, that is what I said, so your point is?
I've seen Red Eye like 5 times. It's one of those fun movies that you put on in the background when you're doing something else. As he said, it's silly, it's popcorn-y, but it is actually entertaining. There's a part where a missile is heading towards a hotel that's thrilling.
Thanks Man, we're the same age and you always point me towards some good choices I likely never would have found... and saved me a lot of time scrolling menus 😆. Its like when blockbuster had they're employees pics section back in the day, only better. Keep up the great work, I really appreciate it!
HBO max dose an outstanding job as far as content goes you can always find something worth watching but just wanted to say thank you when ever I'm looking for a movie to watch I always go and check out your recent videos always have great options thanks so much for your time and effort
I want to see Woman walks ahead part II, where Jessica's character confronts Sitting Bull on why his people upon winning the land in battle committed genocide on the people that had the land before him. She Demonstrates the Wild Irony of his people's position and that although the Americans may not be perfect at least they allowed his people to survive.
David Hyde Peirce is a phenomenal actor. I'll be checking out "The Perfect Host" for sure. I enjoyed the hell out of "Lord of War." Need to watch it again.
While Snatch is easily my favourite Guy Ritchie movie of all time being that it's my favourite movie of all time RocknRolla is such a damn good time! Cast is great, story is fun and I fell in love with Toby Kebbell for his acting of Quid! Such a fun character.
My Fav Guy Ritchie movie out of the ones i've seen so far is The Man From Uncle. He does not appear to be one of my fav directors. I've seen Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Revolver, Sherlock Holmes, Rock N Rolla and was not all that impressed with any of those.
The Coen brothers are unreal. Right out of the gate they make a 100 dollar movie that not only is better than anything most directors could produce on their best day, but there are even a good bunch of remakes of it.
You have two of my all time faves here with From Hell and RocknRolla. From Hell is amazing and even though it is fictional set around true accounts, it's so believable as to the possible true identity of Jack the Ripper and how that was never solved. Plus that ending kicks my butt everytime when he puts the coins on his eyes to pay the Ferry Man. "Goodnight sweet Prince". And even though Snatch is the one everyone knows(for good reason, it's a fun ride, plus it's pretty hard to top Brad Pitt's pikey in it and Jason Statham in a more chill role. Oh and Dennis Farina is freaking awesome as well), but RocknRolla is such a far superior crafted movie and there are serious movie genius moments in it as far as camera work, especially when Gerard Butler is being chased by the Russians. Tom Hardy as handsome Bob, plus Edris Elba, Thandie Newton, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Strong, Toby Kebell and Ludacris. It's just genius filmmaking, but unfortunately they'll never make that remake, The Real RocknRolla, which is truly a tragedy... 😛🤪🤓
Love this latest offering! Once again, you've shown me that we have very similar taste. I've seem and love many of these movies including Red Eye, The Perfect Host, From Hell, and Rocknrolla,. And couple of my favorite movies to quote are in this list!! Eight Legged Freaks... "It's a spider...man!" LOL The opening lines from Lord of War are GREAT! :D - "There are currently 550 million firearms in world wide circulation. That's 1 firearm for every 12 people on the planet. The question is, How do we arm the other 11?" CLASSIC!!!!!
You forgot to mention the score in Paris Texas is by the amazing Ry Cooder, and gives the film an additional layer of bluesy atmosphere and emotional punch. Also not sure why you didn't mention it was directed by another amazing movie genius, Wim Wenders.
You ever consider phrasing your comment like you aren't being self-righteous? Just say.... the score was great. The director in that other movie was a major factor too.
I'm not surprised by this, I think we will see it more and more. Social media is a mean place, especially for young women. We've all seen the negative comments about Caitlin Clark, either diminishing her accomplishments, her athleticism or her looks. It's disgusting. Sandra Gal has also been pretty open about this. I think that Lexi is a very sensitive person that has never been able to separate from others opinions and expectations. I think the meanness is the straw that made it unbearable for her. I hope she is happy and healthy for a long long time.
Just watched, the stranger. Like twisting a elastic band between two fingers, slowly. Not sure about the pay off but really enjoyed. Love to know what you think. 👍
Red Eye is always fun to watch A few minutes in, one may think it'll boring But that's all introduction and then the suspense and actions starts Some great acting too
I've never seen Paris Texas. I've always wanted to see paris Texas. As a matter of fact, I just wrote down Paris Texas before watching your upload. I just watched The Eyes of My Mother. A lot of the movie didn't bother me. I like the B&W, I didn't think the acting was that great, but Ithink that was becuase of the director's wants for the film. Card Coounter looks good. I haven't watched Bone Tomahawk yet, but I have seen it pop up a number of times, so Dragged Across Concrete will be on my watch list. Lord of War and Blood Simple are excellent. Haven't seen them in awhile. Just watched You''ll Won't Be Alone 2022. I liked it. We actually, loved it. Thanks for the list.
Loved ‘Red Eye’. I will try ‘Eight Legged Freaks’. 🎃 Halloween is almost here. I am done with an one pound bag of candy corn. Can’t wait to buy more candy the day after Halloween. Thank you for your work. Good afternoon. 🤡☠️👽😈🙀
Wow, this was exactly what it says for once on the internet... Good actors, good plots and ideas, none of which I've seen and they aren't to obscure or have to many folks ya never heard of. Great list and no bs. Well and presented and clear. Can watch these this weekend. Respect to you sir, thanks!
Hi , love the show... just a quick friendly heads up... Domhnall Gleeson, The name of the actor who starred in ' Frank ' his first name is actually in the Irish Language and when translated into English, he then becomes - "Donal" Keep up the great work... cheers.
I remember watching The Tailor from Panama on VHS, you have good taste as well. And the FC poster behind you stands for Fight Club, but you don't need to confess *anything* 😜
I’m mostly doing Halloween movies now, I got Peacock for the new Halloween. And then I watched The Conjuring on HBO and then Insidious and The Black Phone back on Peacock. And last night took a break for 2002’s The Importance of Being Earnest, which I greatly enjoyed. Then I noticed one of main actors was from Cemetery Man ( which, the Italian title is better ). So now I kind of want to see Cemetery Man again. But I think I will do Insidious 2 and Conjuring 2 first.
RED EYE has a strong Hitchcock vibe. TAILOR OF PANAMA is James Bond meets the Coen Brothers. EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS could be a sequel to ARACHNOPHOBIA. BLACKTHORNE is very much in the same vein as UNFORGIVEN.
But on a lighter note.... By far one of the funniest (and to this day my favorite skit to ever grace SNL) is "What the hell is that?!?". Comedic genius that couldn't have been achieved with anyone else! I mean really, what the hell was that..... Oh.... I know what that is. ;)
Thank you Darren. I 👍 all the time but never comment. Realized I should. As a fellow movie fan I watch your content anytime I'm looking for something I know I will enjoy. Your opinions are appreciated.
That was a great FLICK CONNECTION, Darren. Dragged Across Concrete is an excellent recommendation. Many thanks for sharing this Flick Connection with us and catch you soon. Take care all ⭐️⭐️⭐️
My Favourite from this is (Easily) RocknRolla.. ...Deserves a Sequel.. IF - Done "Correctly".. . . ... .. A Couple others that deserve a shout out are 2 Guns. As well as the Transcendental Blade Runner 2049
So glad you mentioned The Next 3 Days. Feel that movie is soooo underrated, and didn’t really get a lot of hype…truly an all-time fave of mine, and let’s face it, Russell Crowe is pretty awesome in it!! Thanks for all your recommendations…I’ve really enjoyed your channel with in-depth reviews.
Hey. Wanted to let you know that I really appreciate that you don't forget people like me who love the odd, artsy, strangeness for the times when I'm in a "mood". 😁👍
You know I really appreciate these videos/ lists that you put out. Like if I look up top movies blah blah because I want to see something good I haven't heard of yet I'm always taken to these lists of movies that I've heard of or seen a million times. Somehow though I've seen quite a few videos from this channel and the movies are always new, you don't repeat movies for different lists, and they're movies I've generally never heard of. For example I love mel Gibson movies but I've never even heard of dragged across concrete. Idk how you keep pumping out unique lists like these but keep up the good work 👍🏻
The Perfect Host sounds similar in tone and a plot point here and there to a film called Money, starring Kellan Lutz, Jesse Williams from Grey's Anatomy, and Jess Weixler from The Good Wife.
I think that you should have mentioned the next three days is a remake of the 2008 French film Pour elle by Fred Cavayé. He has made some great movies. Also Craig Zahler is an awesome filmmaker, I'm waiting for his next project.
Have a couple of hours to kill and want to watch something, something engaging, something entertaining, something thoughtful, checked with Flick Connection, watched five top lists, mission accomplished, time killed, all desired somethings accounted for, this happens way more often than not. 🤔 Thank you Darren VanDam for the quality work you do. I may one day stop watching Flick Connection long enough to . . . connect to a flick. 🤣😎
A Private War is a great film about a fantastic woman. However we sadly have forgotten about women like Martha Gellhorn who covered wars for 60 years and was the only woman to land on D-Day and became a stretcher bearer for 2 days. Martha Colvin was a great reporter no doubt but it is women like Gellhorn,Chapelle,Bourke-White,Miller,Cowan,Collins and the list goes on. These women did a job in which no one wanted women in the field and they succeeded despite all prejudices.
Such a great list. Definitely checking out the ones I haven’t seen yet, but thank you for getting the word out on Lord of War! I’m still one of the only people I know that’s seen it. Very underrated
If these streaming services were smart they would cut a deal with you to have some of your lists added to their menu selections. ...and even add your videos to their platform.
The Tailor of Panama definitely deserves to be higher on the list. It comes closer to Dr. Strangelove but with it's own unique feel than any other movie that I think I've seen. It has slightly less of the comedy but it is one of the best satires that I've seen.
The film Frank is inspired by Frank Sidebottom a comedy character who did wear a papier-mâché mask all the time. Very interesting and creative man who was also weird.
Fun fact- the guy from the Lord of War is one of the prisoners Russia wanted in trade to free Britney Griner (that woman’s basketball player they’ve got in prison right now.)
Lord of War shockingly only has 1 Nick Cage scene where he goes Nick Cage that I remember. When the african guy shoots a captive and Nick has to cover for himself after he yelled at the warlord for shooting a guy.
