Actually, it was accidentally discovered formulating a coating on aircraft to repel water so the wings didn't freeze. Discovering it works well on squeaky hinges and Rusty nuts was more an accident also, after the fact.

Tried it on a balloon seller on the south bank walked past him and surreptitiously sprayed his balloons and walked away a few seconds later he was stood there with just a handful of strings and a very puzzled expression

What the maker of this video doesn't take into consideration is the incredibly strong odour of WD-40. Whist it's not an unpleasant pong, I certainly wouldn't want my shoes, rucksack, laptop or carpet smelling of the stuff! And releasing rusty bolts and locks, and lubricating squeaky hinges? Wow how radical. Totally amazing! Who'd have thought... The best cure for a stiff zip fastener is to rub a little candle wax on it. No mess, no strong oily smell.
WD는 침투성 용제라 가급적 플라스틱 재질에 것에는 안뿌리는 것이 좋습니다. 플라스틱을 쉽게 변형시키기 때문입니다. 가장 적합한 용도는 녹제거 이지, 윤활이나 이물질 세정이 아닙니다. 특히 LCD 패널이나 화이트 보드와 같은 판은 쉽게 상할수도 있습니다. 알아듣기 쉽게 표현하자면, 표면이 녹는 다는 말입니다. 가죽에 경우 변형을 더 가속화 하기 때문에 절대 저렇게 쓰시면 안됩니다. 구두 같은 경우 방수를 위한 거면 차라리 왁스나 양초를 활용 하는게 더 좋습니다.. 이마저도 그다지 권장하지는 않고, 그냥 구두약으로 여러번 닦다 보면 자연스럽게 생활방수가 됩니다. 구두약 자체에 고형으로 내수성 물질이 포함되어 있기 때문입니다. WD에 경우 흔히 경첩에 뿌리는 데, 영상에 나오는 것처럼 멀쩡한 경첩에 뿌리면, 철에 산화를 가속 시켜 녹이 더 빨리 생깁니다. 그냥 유사시에 쉽게 녹을 제거 할수 있기 때문에 쓰는 거지, 절대로 산화를 대비한 코팅제 및 윤활제가 아닙니다. 이건 활용예라기 보다는 과용에 가까운거 같네요.

Mindblowing, never would have thought of that re the fire you could have just sprayed WD-40 onto the wood directly and lit it re the shoe OR... you could just get babywipes and wipe your shoes with that it's also a lot better for the leather than WD-40 and the other problem with the shoes is , NOW EVERYONE IN THE OFFICE WILL SMELL WD-40 ON YOUR SHOES i don't think you thought this through properly
True about spraying WD40 directly on the wood, but the purpose is to have campfire starting, tinderless options IN your backpack. Do you have room for a can of WD40 in your backpack? Do you want a can of WD40 in your backpack? What if it gets punctured by your survival knife? Now there's WD40 spraying in your backpack. It will soak everything and now you're carrying a flammable pack on your back. If the wads (I assume they are cotton or linen) get popped out of the plastic containers, the most you get is WD40 leeching into absorbent materials that are in close proximity to the leak, not the entire pack. It's a great idea!
