Stuff Smith was one of the most exciting and innovative jazz violinists in America in the 1930's and 40's. His dirty, punchy and aggressive style contrasts greatly with the elegance of, for example, Stephane Grappelli.
In this video I demonstrate 20 jazz violin licks which illustrate his style, all available on a pdf for subscribers (see my email address at the bottom to request a copy).

Thanks again Chris. I love the dissonance here. There is never a wrong note in jazz!

I would love it, but unfortunately it's not that hard, to hit a note what is not just dissonante but wrong :D those are the notes, whats show that you're "out of the concept" :D

The lick that astounds me the most occurs at about 3:47 in the Lullaby of Broadway vid. I get the feeling that Stuff really paired down his Bebop skills for the popular audience. I don't understand the criticism about his intonation either. I mean those octaves he plays sound pretty crisp to me and I wonder if Wes Montgomery didn't take notice? Great presentation. We're about the same age and it's great you are passing along your knowledge. I have four Stephane Grappelli Transcriptions posted on Muse Score if any one is interested, plus some crazy exercises I've dreamed up. Cheers! You kinda remind me of Martin Taylor.

Next time I do a Swing video, I'm going to incorporate some of these. Love that before the bar and diminished stuff. Makes for a nice lead in.

Hey Chris. Nice! Is it possible to put the chords over the (notated) licks? That way we can reuse the licks in different chord progressions that fit in?
@TheFiddleChannel
@TheFiddleChannel 3 года назад
Hi Koen. It is indeed very useful to learn a lick in relation to the chord it came from. In this case all the licks apart from lick 6 work over Bflat, and also the other parts of the turnaround; in almost every case you can repeat the licks all through the A section. Send me an email if you want a pdf.

You played mostly in B Fjat , is that where he played most ?
@TheFiddleChannel
@TheFiddleChannel 10 месяцев назад
When doing a video like this it's easier to do it all in one key. But also yes, I think he played more flat keys than most fiddlers. He was more influenced by wind players and by bepop, both of which favour the flat keys.

@@TheFiddleChannel yes I’m sure he was influenced by the wood winds ! Thank you for the replies! 😊👍🎻
