Morihiro Saito Sensei was one of O Sensei's most well-known students who developed a weapon system for learning by anyone in Aikido. Please like/comment/sub/make a sandwich/share on facebook/tell your friends.
Thanks for this! :) I think there are quite a lot of typos in here from no.10 onward. It should be: "Gyaku Yokomen Ushiro Tsuki" "Katate Gedan Gaeshi" "Katate Toma Uchi" "Katate Hachi no Ji Gaeshi" "Hasso Gaeshi Uchi" ... "Hidari Nagare Gaeshi Tsuki" "Migi Nagare Gaeshi Tsuki".
Man this brings me back. These moves are so fun to learn and satisfying to perform. They also work really well. Bedrock stuff. I'd like to thank the man who taught me some of what he learned from Saito Sensei, but I wouldn't want to bring any evil his way.
This is much like the kata I was taught by Sensei Segano (Sp?) in Sydney in the early seventies - I haven't been able to remember it all for ages - great to get this reminder... He's no longer with us - Greetings to his spirit from his littlest student...
when watched, the movements applied here seem a lot easier than when you try to put them into practice.....even though, awesome skills from sensei saito, wonderful video for learning jô Skills. thanks a lot for posting it! i have just acquired my jô, so i can practice on my own with this guidance.
i've watched this several times now because my grading is coming up soon and i need to know it... well some of it but won't hurt to learn as much as i can :-)
Where could i find a copy of this video? I'm currently studying aikido but sadly do not always have internet access and i would love to have this video for reference. Kind Regards
Alexander Millns Hi Alexander, You can buy the DVD from the Aikido Journal Store: store.aikidojournal.com/morihiro-saitos-aiki-ken-and-jo/ Or from Amazon: www.amazon.com/Morihiro-Saito-Aiki-Jo-DVD/dp/B007SNC5H8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438590323&sr=8-1&keywords=morihiro+saito+jo
Consider moving your questions away from this 'self defence' angle. Aikido is not really interested in self defence. There is nothing in the Hombu Dojo nor in the IAF materials which support it as a combat system. If you're interested in learning to defend yourself in a real attack, join the army. ANZAC day in Australia is coming up, you may wish to see how soldiers often end up. Aikido has much more to offer than defence against street thugs.
Jo suburi practique is destinated for kumi jo and jo kata learning. Aiki jo and aiki ken are not jojutsu or kenjutsu but they preserve, codify and help to train moves for taijutsu. Aikido weapons give you a bit of skill with jo and bokken but no so deep as jojutsu and kenjutsu schools.
Walking sticks, Jo and more is useful as a self defense tool. However akido is the way of peace so its teaches you about the philosophy of aikido. Aikido teaches you that you should learn from different schools as no style can know it all. Look around youtube and you will find some good techniques and ideas on how to defend yourself for sure. That is why took up the JO. Good luck!
mike turley Aikido is a Japanese martial art, and so the various techniques have Japanese names. Learning the Japanese names means that one can go to any dojo anywhere in the world and speak a common language. After only a brief time, one would know that hasso-no-kamae is a posture with the jo (or sword) held at the side of the head, tsuki is a thrust, barai is a sweep, ushiro means to the rear, etc.
