Hello and welcome, from now on, you will have No money, cos you blew it on hardware lol. No…keep it simple, get to know what you’ve got And remember, there are lots of free plugins.🙏🏼
I could watch this format all day. Give me hour long sets with commentary all day, you have all the knowledge and just helps make us all better in the process.
Lots of great lessons here, thanks for sharing RT! You could deliberately slide over to bring stuff in on the 3, then use the two extra bars for the drop to get back to 1. The key change when exposed like that I think works if it modulates down, and close by in the Circle of Fifths depending on how minimal the melodic content of the part is. If it modulates up or distant from where you begin in the circle of 5ths then it sounds too cheezy like the 80's or straight dissonant when it's bare like that, you could hide it behind more stuff or take two or three steps to get there if you have a target note to reach. So here, G to F# is a bit of a leap, maybe better to step through a couple other keys (say A then B, as they're not too distant and B will very nicely move to F#, or use relative minor of A instead of A; like G > F#m > F# . Key of G has an F#dim in it already which could be a really cool step to the minor F# then the major F#) so land on the F# right when you bring in the new chords to ground it, for that floating down then landing feeling.
where is original sample from, not Jackson's, the piano/rhodes in G? Also, I have quite a lot of gear, and I get that the price is relative, but I really want to know what warrants Avalon to be so expensive. One oscillator, one filter, literally nothing special in that box (ofc, if you dig the sound, it works), but versatility wise, what warrants 1.5 k for a box you can get for 200 -300 quid from a decent developer (Erica), not even mentioning the B villains.
Unreal Ricky 🔥I was trying a similar setup with the Tracks a SE-02 and an SP-404 that has the compressor on permanently. But there just isnt this level of control with the EXT INST turning off when moving in and out of modes. Seems like the octatrack would be a way better option.
Here’s a question someone may have run into with this setup. Rick is adjusting swing on CT which is what I want to do. But when I go to swing, Circuit says “syn” in red indicating it’s synced with OT, and you can’t adjust swing. Does this mean you’re manually matching the tempo between OT and Circuit or is there a way to send clock and transport from OT but still have swing control on Circuit?

Great stuff! Simple and effective setup. You could do a video talking about your approach to vocal samples and how you organize them for this kind of improv sets.
Can you please explain what do you mean at 11:50 by "and what's crazy is, because that start point doesn't get affected until the sound is triggered, I can just kind of play it" ? Is it that the vocal start point progressively changes by moving the slider ? Being that B sets it to value 52, moving the slider moves from value 1 to 52
Funny how looping vocals of tracks that you even know can totally change them. I would have been singing “New hot Mercedes” and “Bake some chowder” on the floor of this set
Nah. Wait a minute. I can do this... But i feel / FELT like i need to transition Alot more to hold the audience attention. What youve shown me is ... HOW to be patient and let it ride. This is inspiring I listened to the entire 25min... Good Job
You make me want to take tracks out of the box again. Tracks is an improv machine. I gotta ask, do you use presets for synth 1&2, or do you design your own patches in components? Dope video btw, Ricky 🎛️🎚️⚡
awesome work like always, im always jotting notes down when you do these videos. i would suggest tho, it might sound more natural if you try changing the key of your sequences after the sample is in. like maybe bring the new sample in, take out all the other melodic elements and drums for tension, change the key of the sequences (while theyre muted to the crowd), and then when you bring everything back it'll be in key. it might be a smoother experience. and its ok to have the sample playing in a different key than the previous sequences together as long as theres not too much sustained melodic content and theyre not clashing too hard. if you think of it with djing, its okay to be mixing tracks that arent in the same key, but it often depends on the content of each track and how much/what kind of melody is present. but with your samples i think it'll be easier since youre not dealing with fully mixed and arranged tracks, and your two "decks" are basically a bass line and a sample
Woah how did you quickly fix the velocity of the hats around 10:30 ? Looks like holding duplicate you can drag your finger across all the hits to copy a lower velocity hit?
instead of switching the key of the bassline before you bring the new set of chords in, have you ever tried leaving it? it creates a lot of dissonance but that tension is so cool to dance to. it also mirrors how DJs work (or used to work before you could change the key of a track whenever you want) where theres that moment of harmonic tension before the new track's bassline is brought in. might be fun to experiment with
Being a DJ originally, waaaay before i got into production, i wonder if it'd be less stressful to being able to pre-listen to stuff you are bringing in? So, im wondering whether a 4 channel DJ mixer would help to smooth it all out? For transitioning, I think that a live loop from the outgoing track is smoother than the forced key change. This is all just for discussion, I'm not criticising in the slightest. I love it when you are just getting crazy with it!
Hey ! I dont comment often but it's the second time i come back to this video. Love the vibe, love the workflow. Your videos are amazing. Love and passion from France
Awesome set. I do wish that Circuit synth was a bit more subtle sometimes. I have the OG and the Rhythm, I just love the interface but not crazy about the sounds
Opening that hold on the sample is a neat trick. Should work fine on my blackbox will try later 🙂 thanks for the chill beats and the glance into your process 👍
Great demo! I love the Novation sequencers they are so easy to use :) I hope they will continue to release new Circuits and Launchpad Pros with improved sequencers (more steps, and patterns)
7:30 - Do you usually pick the vocal + spot like that on stage? Or is this just an example to demonstrate here? seems like a lot of menu dicing on the spot 😯. Thanks for showing the chef's secrets😄
This is by far one of your best videos. Very inspirational and extremely useful for learning and getting some ideas of my own. Well done Ricky and thanks for the content!
It's not my kind of music, but I've seen a lot of tips and tricks. There aren't that many that show how to do it, with all the challenges and little mistakes. Thanks for that and I wish you all the best. What is a pity are the ads that kill the flow of experience. I must have had 10 of them, YT is crazy, it's getting more and more. I don't know if you can adjust that, a few less would be nice. Anyway, it's probably just me.
Damn dude, this was what I needed this morning. A lot of stuff to take away for my own live jams. Love the fact that you use the tracks in a very similar way to myself. Absolute tight jam, happy accidents and all!
Great stuff. That said, I’d drop the OctaTrack for a mc 707 or 404 as both would give you access to a huge library of sounds and you can trigger clips… and do real-time effects stuff to. It’s probably cause I’ve never fallen for the OctaTrack though. I do own several Elektron products and enjoy them though….
Thx for sharing, saw you at the AIAIAI launch party last week and was curious about the rig. Love how you rocked it and were able to pack it up and roll so easily. Set was tight 🙌🏾
so so dope. Inspiring honestly. You have me wanting to design and build my own live set up like this. Looks mad fun. Look forward to the next. Awesome stuff yo
I wish I could be at the show not only to hear the set again which is great but also to watch Ricky be super excited and proud when those off-the-cuff moments happen better than he expected! 😆Good luck Ricky!
Ou Yes Ou Yes, this is your best content , jamming house with hardware you enter in the zone and sound much better than doing the same thing on ableton 👌.
