WHO I AM
Hello, I'm Jen Campbell. I'm an award-winning poet and bestselling author of twelve books, spanning short stories, poetry, picture books, and nonfiction.
My books for adults include Please Do Not Touch This Exhibit, The Beginning of the World in the Middle of the Night, The Girl Aquarium, The Bookshop Book, and The Sunday Times bestselling Weird Things Customers Say in Bookshops series. My picture book trilogy Franklin and Luna, and my middle-grade book The Sister Who Ate Her Brothers, are published by Thames & Hudson. I've won both an Eric Gregory Award and the Jane Martin Poetry Prize, and my books have been translated into twenty languages.
I've worked in the publishing industry for over fifteen years, initially as a bookseller, and now as a freelance editor, content creator and disability advocate. I review books online, in print and on the radio. I run a RU-vid channel where I talk about books, the history of fairy tales, and the representation of disability and disfigurement. I also offer online writing workshops and editorial services, give talks at schools, publishing companies, universities and book festivals on a variety of topics, and I run a book club for TOAST clothing.

Really excited for Stag Dance by Torrey Peters in March, and I've already ordered The Sapling Cage, which will be my first Margaret Killjoy! :) Also, I'm *obsessed* with the idea behind the Gliff/Glyff books by Ali Smith!

I have already pre ordered a copy of She’s Always Hungry, I absolutely loved both of Eliza Clark’s novels when I read them earlier this year and cannot wait to sink my teeth into her short stories 🎉

I really enjoyed Mystery Lights--one of my favorite short story collections this year. And thanks for the head's up on Victorian Psycho, that definitely sounds up my alley. Also...congrats on your forthcoming book!

Read My Good Bright Wolf all in one sitting just yesterday. Have been on a Sarah Moss kick recently after reading Ghost Wall a couple of weeks ago and being blown away. I'm also excited for Gunk by Saba Sams!

I’ve got the Wyld, the Phillips, the Moss, the Ogawa, and the Pineiro here waiting to be read. I am about halfway through The Echoes but haven’t picked it up for quite some time. I was finding the time spent in Australia to be very dull. I will go back and finish it at some point. I was surprised how much longer the new Pineiro book is too. And the font is not the most comfortable for tired eyes. But I am looking forward to reading it. Hum is probably the next one in this group that I’ll get to. Just picked up Rumaan Alam’s new one yesterday. Not sure if it will be anything like Leave the World Behind (which I loved), but I’m going to give it a go! I will take a look at the new Max Porter.

That’s a shame about the font! I’m enjoying the London sections more, too, but still really liking it overall x

Glad to see you back! A few of these are definitely on my radar too (My Good Bright Wolf, She's Always Hungry and The Strange Case of Jane O), and I've already read some of them. I loved The Echoes, but was very disappointed by Mystery Lights. Also DID YOU JUST CASUALLY DROP THE FACT THAT YOU'RE ANNOUNCING A NEW BOOK SOON?!?!

@@jenvcampbell overall, I liked many of the stories “vibes”, but didn’t ultimately didn’t go anywhere. Many felt like they fizzled out before they reached any sort of conclusion or climax. That might just be me and my personal experience though… I can’t wait to hear about your next project. I’ll be staying tuned.

Always here for an Ali Smith - I’ve read everything I think, so having or reread until a new one arrives! My favourite Evie Wyld so far is After the Fire but I haven’t got to the new one yet. And great to have a new Claudia Pineiro - Elena Knows was my favourite book that year too, such an interesting discussion of female body autonomy from the perspective of someone who has virtually lost all autonomy through her health.

The book I am most looking forward to next year is the new Torrey Peters. And second to that is the new book by Omar El Akkad. I loved What Strange Paradise, so am looking forward to a new book by him. But there is still one backlist book of his I haven't read.

I'm about halfway through Mina's Matchbox and I'd say it's just OK, but I'm enjoying it nonetheless. Very Ghibli like, cosy and whimsical, and some really beautiful writing. I'm most excited for Victorian Psycho, sounds so good! An Yu also has a new book out next year, Sunbirth; as does Nell Stevens, The Original.
