When I saw “20 pitch at bat” I definitely didn’t expect 2 balls in the first 3 pitches. 16 out of 17 consecutive pitches were fouled (“fouled”) off. Thats crazy.
@garyco766
@garyco766 2 года назад
It's also virtually the only way to achieve a pitch count like that. At max 3 balls and 2 non-foul strikes, the rest (and potentially the first 2 strikes also) have to be fouls.
@MyBiPolarBearMax
@MyBiPolarBearMax 2 года назад
@@garyco766 yeah my point was that the balls are usually more interspersed in a long long at bat like that (in baseball anyways), not swinging and making contact in 16/17. In retrospect in makes more sense in softball where you won’t have as many swings and misses

When I played senior league ball a kid on our team got HBP and the ump somehow inexplicably missed the call. It hit him in the shin, and was so obvious that the crowd went nuts. Even the pitcher and catcher told the ump it hit him, and the UMP refused to change the call. The poor kid's on the ground crying in severe pain with a massive bruise and a welt that raised up a couple of inches from the swelling. He didnt finish the at bat and his dad took him to the hospital. He had a fractured tibia, severe bone bruising and missed the rest of the season laid up in cast.

I think the reason is that it was called a foul ball on the field and that’s what they challenged and that’s not reviewable. In baseball and I think in softball the ball has to be beyond the base to be reviewable. It still doesn’t make sense and every play should be reviewable but I think that’s what happened

@@PromisedMilk If I'm reading this correctly, you're right... The following plays can be subject to review via initiation by the crew chief or via a head coach's challenge: *Regarding batted balls (any ball higher than the top of the foul pole when it leaves the field cannot have that aspect reviewed):* Deciding whether a batted ball called fair is fair or foul. *Deciding whether a batted ball called foul should be a ground rule double, home run or hit-by-pitch.* Deciding whether a batted ball called fair and ruled not to have left the field of play did leave the field. It clearly says you can challenge if a batted ball called foul should be a hit-by-pitch.

If you have a college near you, I would suggest checking out the women's athletics events and whatever less popular men's sports they have, like softball, gymnastics, basketball, tennis, soccer, hockey, etc. They're a lot of fun. Much less toxic atmosphere than the big 3 men's sports. I started going to as many as I could a few years ago and love it. Tickets are usually pretty cheap, around $5 or so. The reason everything isn’t reviewable is for “speed of play”. @duffman18

I wish more pitchers in MLB did underhand pitches. There's only like 2 or 3 of em. It's just so alien and different to what batters are used to, with the ball travelling upwards and even breaking upwards instead of down as you say, that it's surely not a bad idea to try more of them, if there are any in the minor leagues. Because batters will have no opportunity to practice against them, because these players are so rare that nearly all the teams wouldn't have their own underhand pitcher. So yeah, just to completely throw off batters, have an underhand relief pitcher to do some craziness

I actually know that umpire on the right at 3:36. She started off in my local association and won our Rookie of the Year award over 20 years ago. She's a damn good umpire. FYI, softball pitchers can go forever because their arm motion is natural. Your arm hangs down, it doesn't stick up into the air. An overhand motion puts an incredible amount of unnatural strain on the elbow and shoulder.
@pyrobryan
@pyrobryan 2 года назад
She's really slow on her strike calls. She'll call strike and wait like 2 seconds before putting her arm up. It's murder when you're in the outfield and can't hear the call, especially on crucial at-bats and pitches.

I once played in a church league that had a 3-2 count instead of a 4-3 count. And a foul ball on x-1 count was considered a strike-out.

I just feel bad for the runner at 1st who probably had to run on every 3-2 pitch.

Sox had a blown walk off call a couple of days ago (walked off the next inning anyway). Runner was called out on interference at first after he ran directly in the middle of the base path. It was against the cubs I’m pretty sure.

I dont know where i got this idea from but when i played ball as a kid i always thought if you hit 4 foul balls you were out. It blew my mind when i found out you could hit as many fouls as you wanted

That was always our kickball rule, or when we played whiffle ball without enough players (which was always).

Some kids leagues do that just as a way to speed up the game, especially with the way some game times are and the field may not have lights. At least when I was a kid playing baseball in the mid 90's that was the case. The worst though was a league I was in, unbeknownst had a rule that 3 balls was a walk and two strikes was a strike out. I rarely struck out, but it had you swinging at anything remotely close and I hated it as you couldn't really get a feel for the pitcher and wait for that one good pitch you could crank. Needless to say, that was my one and only year playing those bs rules.

Pitch should be reviewable under number 1 OR number 2 on the list at 3:55, right (#2 notes "HBP")
@rhysduncan8676
@rhysduncan8676 2 года назад
They're not really reviewing for HBP though, technically - they're reviewing for a strike vs foul ball

@zacd4902 2 года назад
@@rhysduncan8676 Yeah I hear you. I guess then it goes back to what Jomboy was saying: doesn't make sense that they didn't review anything at all.
