Not only is the Cubase mixer good for teaching how to use a real console, it's also a great mixer for us old guys who started on consoles. The similarity between the Cubase Mix Console and analog consoles is one of the main reasons I chose Cubase. I just wasn't ABLE to LOGICally mix as easily with other DAW's, even if they were had TOOLS that were PRO.

I've used numerous DAWs over the years, from Logic to PT to Ableton. I've been getting into Cubase out of an interest for doing more orchestral scoring work and it seems like the best fit for that. I have to say some of the routing and setup feels a bit convoluted as an outsider, but I'm gonna stick with it - everything in this list is really impressive and something I wish I could do every single day in PT or Logic. The searching/filtering/view presets is huge, especially when dealing with large sessions. I also love that utilitarian channel strip tools are readily available without having to add any additional plugins, just like a real console. And the metering is really slick. Thanks for making this video!

I think “Quick Link” would be worth a dedicated section. It’s brilliant. If I e.g. insert a tape simulation plugin that doesn’t have any included grouping option on several channels, I can now select all the channels and control all the parameters on all tracks from just one plugin instance, maybe switch the tape formula on all drum tracks at once? No problem! There are still features sorely missing, though: One much requested is the ability to re-arrange channels in the mixer, independent from the order in the arrange window. The optical separation between channels still could be better. An integrated dry/wet-mix for each plugin slot, like reaper has, would be most welcome. I would love to be able to save my track visibility configurations (for track types) globally . The snapshot function still doesn’t save automation for the plugins afaik, which is crucial. Despite those shortcomings, the mixer is great, and I cannot imagine mixing without a pre section, control room, quick link and visibility agents.

Ooops! I missed this one! Great video! You can probably go through the comments and find 20 more reasons for 20 Reasons Why Cubase Mixer is the BEST! -MEGA Walkthrough - part 2 !!! So you can add the configurations feature that also works in the project window showing sets of tracks and you can change the sets via key commands and only see e.g. guitars or percussion tracks or whatever. The best thing is you have two sets of key commands for this since the project window and the mix console window have the same key commands but separate sets.

A very nice, infomational video about the cubase mixer. Dom is not speaking in a boring tone and not to fast, he's english is very clear to me and good to understand. Some german speakers that talk about cubase. some that teach cubase and in german, speaking and clicking very fast. OK a video i can stop, go backwards an starte it agein, but it is also that way very exhausting. So great job in my opinion! More like that about cubase. The other videos from the cubase channel on youtube are mostly very long and the speaker sonds very boring to me and not that clear like Dom.

I love Cubase, it's been so well designed I think Pro Tools bought their way into being considered the industry standard and then constantly gouge you and considering dozens of the patents in Pro Tools come from Cubase (they wanted an industry standard so gave them away for free!) and the fact that as a drummer I can see those nice meters from where I sit behind a real drum kit, the wood ones we used to use and can see them clearly. I also have an interface with 64 bit floating point so one more of many reasons to use Cubase. Great video, one more subscription for that and I like the way your progress bar is segmented to find individual points that you made, never saw that before and it's very handy. Cubase will be the only daw I use, because the others just don't keep up in my humble opinion, well a little humble but not too much. Thanks for the video, I'll be checking out some more after this, well done.

I've been using Cubase Pro for years now. First version I bought was the 7.5 version. It's been my first Daw right from the start. Maybe because I think it's the pretiest of all....Maybe yes, but that's not the only one. I've got friends that use Reaper, an other one, Logic that tried to convince me to make the switch to a more 'affordable Daw'. I keep telling them, that I don't, and won't 'downgrade' Not that I was satisfied with all the upgrade of Cubase...had some serious issue, with the 8.5 version, but problem was solved with the 9 version. Since then, I never looked back. But now l want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, for your wonderfull videos. All the things that you taught me, the past few years. I do trust your opinions at the highest level. You are a wonderfull teacher. Every time I watch one of your video, I feel that I learned something more , a new trick all the time. #21 Cubase IC Pro! For less than $20 for that app (plus an iPad), not only do you have a touch screen controller for transport, you can move multiple faders at once, create in an instant a load of macro buttons for one touch operation (such a time saver!) so I use it all the time next to my mouse and keyboard, but using a feature of the control room, in an instant on an iPad I select Cue1 (up to Cue4) and I can control that Cue mix remotely when I want to sing or play in a different part of the studio, as can up to 4 performers each with their own mix! How efficient and effective is that for happy performers rather than a long conversation with the producer to adjust each channel volume up and down! It’s incredible! Thanks Dom for a great video!

Weill, I've always been a Cubase guy and although I'm basically interested in a few other DAW's (Harrison Mixbus, Studio one) I don't want to get confused by different handling and workflow. What I love about Cubase is that it gives me a lot of modern features to work with combined with a very console-like look and feel. If you look at Ableton for example, I'm sure it is a good DAW, but just the look of it makes it impossible to use for me. In Cubase I feel "at home"

I'm a bit old school and have mixed a lot on traditional mixing consoles. The Cubase mixer just makes the most sense to me. And it has so many nice bells and whistles that I never had before. And yeah, I don't know why so many DAWs don't have a Pre section, it's such an essential thing. But then again I also don't know why it isn't visible by default in Cubase (maybe that changed, I still have to upgrade to 11). But templates take care of that anyway.

Show channels with data at cursor is a huge feature! I’m mixing a live concert consisting of 20 songs. I split everything except the drums in separate channels per song. Then when mixing a song I use the feature to show only those channels with data. No crazy automation chasing levels etc for each song. I have 3 keyboard players each with multiple keys. Bass and synth bass. Sequencer world with even more tracks. Guitar... 5 vocalists... the prep time is tedious but now I’ve got a simplified mix strategy thanks to that feature. Thanks to you for all the great tips and tricks!

I used Cubase 2-4 for quite some time and then moved to Reaper, mainly for one reason: CPU usage! I opened duplicate sessions in both DAWs, Cubendo was using 90% CPU, Reaper was 32%! Also, the global changes you made in the video can also be done in Reaper, if not most DAWs these days? I dunno as right now I only use Reaper, after years of working with most everything out there - I'm old and have been an AE since pre-DAW days :) Anyways, very good video my friend and it offers a lot of help for many I'm sure. One thing I don‘t like about cue sends is, that you „have to“ fiddle around with those cue send sliders if you want to change the headphone mix. So I use Direct-Routing to send unity gain level to group tracks that mirror the instruments the artist wants to hear. From there I route those „monitor-channels“ to groups like „band“, „drums“ and „voice“. Those last groups are routed with „cue send“ post fader to my headphone outputs. And I use one of the mix console windows only for monitoring. That way I have faders that control the volume of the instruments and voices the artist is hearing and I can mix them totally separate from my main mix, even with separate effects and individual/additional eq if necessary.

This is a great alternative to the built-in cue sends. I use Direct-Routing a lot for the rear-buss technique, and things like parallel compression.

Wow these tips are great.. Sucks to see all of this now, just having finished mixing an album in Cubase. This video would have been really helpful for my workflow :D

Thank you for this video, it is great to see this DAW at its best! What I would like to mention here is the importance of a particular workflow. So, I see now that Cubase mixer is awesome, but I personally never use mixer view in my DAW of choice, I always work in the "arrange view" or whatever you may call it. I just have no use for mixer at all.

Incredible mixer! I've worked with Logic's, Ableton's and Studio One's mixers, and Cubase's is definitely the most complete. There is however a feature that I miss and I cannot understand why it has not been implemented and that is the grouping of the channel strips underneath the busses, similar to the folders in the arrangement window, that would allow to pack/unpack the contained channels.

Great presentation! I'm considering a move from Studio One to Cubase, and the Mixer is a big reason. I'm hoping you can answer some related questions... 1. How's the CC121? Does it keep you away from the mouse & keyboard? 2. Can the meter next to the fader be hidden since it's available atop the track? And can the master meter (control room?) show different measurements in the mixer (LUFS) and project window (RMS/dbfs)? 3. Does Cubase have an equivalent to Studio One's Scenes? Can I set up a drum "scene" to show only my drum tracks, busses and VCA? 4. Is the channel strip modeled after any particular hardware? Is the preamp? 5. Is there an option to keep the busses next to the related audio tracks? 6. Can the CC121 control both the panning and width of the Combine Panner? Thanks!

1) yes, a lot, for me at least 2) no, you cannot remove the meter next to the fader. yes, you can have a LUFS and RMS at the same time. However, the scale setting of the meters are synced. 3) yes, and you can show different configuration at each of the 3 mixer windows simultaneously 4) I do not know, guess not. 5) yes, you can move the bus in the project window to any position and so just next to your audio tracks. 6) no, when a channel is set to combined panner, CC121 will control the left signal only.
