Territory marking with urine.
Male cats are known for marking territory by spraying urine on vertical surfaces. This behavior, called "spraying," is how they communicate to other cats that the space is theirs. The urine contains pheromones, which carry important messages like "this territory is already claimed" or "I’m available for mating." Although neutering usually reduces this habit, if the cat started marking before being neutered, he might continue doing it. In other words, even neutered males may retain behaviors typical of intact cats. There are other behaviors that neutered cats shouldn't have, but if they learned them before neutering, they may continue, and we’ll talk more about them in this video.
Tendency to disappear in search of females.
If your male cat isn't neutered, you may notice that he loves to explore and sometimes disappears for long periods. This happens because he’s searching for females in heat. This adventurous instinct makes him travel great distances, facing dangers like fights, traffic, and even getting lost. Neutering can help reduce this wandering impulse, keeping your cat safer and closer to home. But as we mentioned before, if the cat is neutered when older, after already getting used to roaming, he might continue doing it. Remember, cats are very routine-oriented.
Mounting behavior.
Even after being neutered, some male cats may still display mounting behavior on other animals, objects, or even people’s legs. This could be a way of expressing dominance or simply an old habit. While it can be embarrassing, it’s a natural behavior that tends to lessen over time.
Intense vocalizations to attract females.
Have you ever been woken up by your cat’s loud meowing in the middle of the night??? Unneutered males may produce very intense vocalizations, especially when they sense a female in heat nearby. These nightly "serenades" are their way of saying, "I’m here!" Neutering usually reduces this kind of meowing. Female cats also meow to seek mates, but male cats’ meows tend to be deeper.
