The Ayutthaya Kingdom was founded in 1351 by King Ramathibodi I, also known as U-Thong. It was the second Thai empire, after Sukhothai. At the height of its power, Ayutthaya was one of the world’s largest and wealthiest cities with over a million inhabitants.
The city was built on an island surrounded by three rivers, The Chao Phraya, the Pa Sak and the Lopburi river that served as a natural barrier against invaders. Ayutthaya was connected to the Gulf of Siam about 100 kilometers South by the Chao Phraya river.
A number of palaces and many imposing temples were built. Architecture and art were influenced by neighboring empires as Sukhothai and Angkor, as well as China, Japan and several European countries. One of the most clear examples of foreign influence is the large Angkor style prangs like the ones of the Wat Ratchaburana and the Wat Chaiwatthanaram.
During the over four centuries of its existence many wars were fought with rival Kingdoms as Sukhothai, Burma and Angkor. In 1431 Ayutthaya invaded Angkor ending the Khmer empire that had dominated much of South East Asia for centuries.
Finally the Ayutthaya Kingdom ended in 1767 when the Burmese invaded and destroyed the city. The city was not rebuild; instead the Thais moved their capital further South to Thonburi. It took until the end of the 1960’s when the Thai Fine Arts Department began with the restoration works in Ayutthaya.
Today a number of temples have been restored that give a good impression of the Kingdom’s wealth. In 1991 the historical park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There are many things to see and due in Ayutthaya. It’s a short trip by train or car from Bangkok and a must see.
There are so many other things to do in the former capital and these are just a few of what is available.

I really enjoy things that are out away from the crowds. I’ve been to Ayutthaya at least 100 times and have seen so much. Even with that I always find something new to see when I go there. I do appreciate your comments. It’s always good to hear feedback since I sometimes forget what people at home watching them think. I get lost in talking to myself. Lol

I’m very happy to hear you enjoy them. I try to give out any information that I know. It’s a bit difficult at times with the language barrier but I usually can find out a few things to share.

Hi ! Thank you for making this video and giving introductions! I would like to visit all of the temples in one day but I wonder if I can survive under the sizzling heat…. Anyway, where’s the bait noodle shop in the video? Can you post the link in the google map, please 🙏?

maps.app.goo.gl/cXtewuHPjQrQJ9J79?g_st=ic This is a good place to eat. I’ve been here many times. Nam tok moo is kinda the regional dish for the area but this one is my favorite plus it’s almost in the middle of the island. There are a couple small ruins nearby that no one visits but are worth a Quick Look as well. Mainly Wat Ho Rakang (temple of the bell) just to see the temple entrance that is a bell tower. Here is the video if you want to see it. Mae Nang Pluem Temple - Built in 1377 - Ayutthaya Thailand ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bdiUl2aO4z8.html The heat will be tough if you’re not used to it. I’ve been to Ayutthaya hundreds of times. You won’t be able to see everything in a day or even a month but you can get a lot done. Things are spread out more than you think but the main temples everyone sees should be possible. I would do the 6 that are part of the historical park ticket plus a few of the others. The ruins are also very big so plan an hour or so at each one if you want to see most of the details. Take a look at my Ayutthaya playlist if you want a few more ideas. I’ve made around 120 videos from here.
