When Switch says that line about 20 questions, if you were to count the number of questions Neo asked up to that point, you would find out he asked, you guessed it, 20 questions.
My favorite Easter Egg in the Matrix is when Neo goes to see the Oracle. There is music playing very faintly in the background from her radio. And the name of the song? Duke Ellington's "I'm Beginning To See The Light."
Switch’s handle: I always liked this one. She is called “Switch” because in the original script she was supposed to be male in the real world and female in the Matrix. The best the studio would let the Wochawski’s do is make her tomboyish in the real world. It is also when you think about it a foreshadowing of the Wachowski’s personal lives in the years after the movie.
Additionally, at the time of release, estrogen pills were red. As the Matrix itself was an allegory for the trans condition and the difficulties trans people have assuming the identities of who they are supposed to be, taking the 'red pill' was a sly indication of taking the hormones a trans woman would use to effect their transition.
@@corrinarobinson7078 Estrogen pills are of all colors, reflecting the different potency of each of the many strengths. You're reading too much into that aspect. - (a retail & hospital pharmacist of 30 years)
I’ve always felt the overall message of unplugging from a false reality is one of the best a movie can have. Imagine going through a day where you’re not loaded with caffeine, sugar, carbs, nicotine, liquor, access to your phone, and that job you hate. All of those things gone for one day. Who would you be? What would you do? Unplugging from all you think you need is such a riveting plot device it still jars people to this day.
With all the Alice and Wonderland references how do you not bring up the mirror consuming him when he first takes the red pill... literally goes through the looking glass
Actually I think they put a wonderful visual twist on this idea with the looking glass being literally consumed by Neo rather than Neo being consumed by the mirror. I.E. the mirror flowing down Neo's throat. A foreshadowing of the final reveal of the solution that was stumbled upon by another. That nearly all participants would accept the programming if they were given a choice. Even if that choice were at a nearly subconscious level. I.E. the matrix being shoved down our collective throats.
His performance as Smith was so great that, to this day, I have a very difficult time thinking of him as the Elf Lord Elrond in The Lord of the Rings and not Agent Smith cosplaying at a Ren Faire.
This film inspired me to read Simulation & Simulacra, my first heavy psychology text, I then went on to read many more, eventually changing careers and becoming a teacher. It's strange looking back over the last 20 years, the Matrix seems to have directly influenced me more than any other film.
It’s amazing, the little, seemingly innocuous things that influence us and our choices. Not everyone can place what brought them to their present situation, and the choices that brought them there. You’re lucky, in that regard, that’s really pretty cool- thanks for sharing!
@@tunguskalumberjack9987 Thanks for the comment. This vid inspired me to reflect on my old film studies and what influenced me around that era: The Matrix, The Cell (J-Lo & Vincent D'Onofrio), Identity (John Cusack), Fight Club (book & film). It's a really interesting Saturday ponder. :D
Daniel Cooper No problem! That era was full of great movies like that, that would actually make you use your brain a bit. It’s sad to compare that to the state of most movies that are being produced currently. Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and I hope that you and your loved ones are safe and healthy.
@@tunguskalumberjack9987 Thank you! You and your family too, señor. Yes, the world of entertainment with integrity has become harder to find, but it still exists. Independent and underground art movements still form when the mainstream becomes intolerable. ARGs are quite intriguing new examples of storytelling.
Daniel Cooper Yeah, independents are still usually a great source of integrity in all types of art- people who share their real creative vision, and not what they had to compromise with a studio executive (or someone else) who is providing funding that the artist needs to survive. Hopefully I don’t sound too ignorant, but what does ARG stand for? (And thanks for the kind words)-
My favorite one is the deja vu scene... The 'black cat' is seen twice as the glich in the matrix occurs. The next scene, the character 'Mouse' is killed.
the deja vu scene always bothered me, because nobody would ever refer to something that blatantly weird as deja vu. It was a good concept, but the implementation was jarring to me for some reason. Maybe the cat shaking itself off was just too much of a tell and felt a bit patronising.
@@urthface +1 for the thought, -1 for the execution. How about that haha? I hear you though. Almost TOO blatant, but I can imagine trying to portray such complex concepts sometimes was hard to do
Aaaah, that scene is so deep. Because of the way we experience de ja vu in our brains is just like a glitch. Eg we can increase the chances of getting de ja vu with anti-flu medicines
Surprised in the Jesus section it wasn’t mentioned that when Neo dies near the end he is dead for exactly 72seconds to represent the 3days before Jesus resurrection.
@@Grzauka maybe so but it was still 3days due to the way days were counted at the time. It was irrelevant when in the day the thing happened as long as some of the day was still left that counted as a day. And the easiest way of representing 3days is using the modern understanding of days. And at the time of the film and today when someone thinks of 3days they think 72hours.
There's lots of stuff in The Matrix, such as the version number of the ship, Nebuchadnezzar(sp?). It is a bible reference: Mark III No. 11 (Mark 3:11). "And, whenever the evil spirit saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God."" And the obvious one that NEO is an anagram of ONE. They laid the easter eggs on pretty thick.
7:08, a couple more things that people may not know about this scene is that, while the machine pulls Neo out of the pod, Reeves' idea was to draw a correlation between himself and the infant in the pod, so he shaved off all his body hair, including his eyebrows AND eyelashes to look more like a newborn. Another thing you may not have known, was that the goo in the pod was bone-chillingly cold and Reeves came dangerously close to hypothermia several times, but he was so committed to helping the Wachowskis achieve the scene, that he ignored his condition, despite the medical staff's suggestions to get out and warm up.
Something I noticed long time ago and no one ever mentions it. When Neo goes to see oracle for the first time. In atrium next to blind men, on chair next to him is written Sia. Sia is ancient Egyptian god of perception. Also The Sia (hieroglyph) was also used to represent "to perceive", "to know" or "to be cognizant".
Because they put the truth in front of you then make fun off it. When people speak out they get labelled conspiracy theorist its called operation mockingbird.
On my second time watching it I realized how similar Neo’s boss and the agents are. Their voices, mannerisms and looks are basically identical. I know that’s an obvious one but I still appreciated it.
But... Isn't it the plot? Smith is an Agent (agent Smith), and as programs should behave alike. But he is set free.. Instead of being an antivirus (which it is what the agents are, they combat what are not making the Matrix work properly). Agent Smith transforms from an antivirus to a virus that corrupts the main system. Quite nice visual of a computer thing
One of my all time favorite movies. The script is just great and the more you look at it the greater it becomes. Also, the casting is perfect. Great cinema. Visualy stunning, smart, but also very entertaing. It's not an easy combination.
The cookie means far more. In Reloaded Merv gives a woman a piece of cake that is coded to give her an orgasm. Food can contain altering code. The Oracle gives Neo a cookie and a piece of candy, possibly recoding him. Its all a method of control.
#11. The entire film is structured around Thomas/Neo waking up, which he does 9 times: 1. "Wake up, Neo" on his computer. 2. Alarm buzzing 9:18 "Shit, shit." Neo is late for work. 3. Post interrogation Neo wakes up as from a nightmare and touches his mouth and checks his navel. 4. Silver fluid covers Neo and he blacks out, then awakens in his pod, covered in goo. 5. Neo awakens to find himself surrounded by Morpheus' crew. Morpheus says, "Welcome to the real world." Then New blacks out. Neo drifts in and out of consciousness. Asks "Am I dead?" and "Why do my eyes hurt?" 6. Neo awakens in his cabin on the Nebuchadnezzar and pulls out the IV in his arm. 7. After vomiting and passing out, New wakes up in his bunk. "I can't go back, can I?" After accepting his life in the real world, we no longer see Neo wake up: 8. Trinity brings Neo's dinner to his room while he is sleeping. Then he is up in the Construct, being taught by Morpheus about agents. Neo can't sleep and talks to Cypher and drinks Dozer's moonshine. 9. The next day, they visit the oracle, are betrayed by Cypher, and Neo dies, Shot by Agent Smith. He is brought back to life by Trinity.
9 is a holy number, too, symbolizing divine completeness. Its the end of everything. Its the holy number "3"....three times. (3 is the Trinity if no one caught that yet). Jesus died at the 9th hour of the day, on the 3rd day. The first Gentile convert to the newly formed Christianity happened at the 9th hour, too.
maybe a coincidence, if you believe in those, or providence, but in the end credits there are 9 "Wake Up" as well... 8 times screamed at us by Rage Against The Machine in their lyrics and 1 time in the credits themselves listing the song. adding to a nice 9 extra "wake up" calls in the credits alone. technically in the lyrics there is an additional "wake ya up", but it's not exactly the same "wake up" as the rest, and it's part of a longer sentence, so I prefer adding the song title in credits instead...
11:15 Let's not forget his full name is Thomas Anderson. You're correct on the etymology of "Anderson" (son of man) but Thomas is also has a Biblical connotation: Doubting Thomas. i.e. someone who doesn't quite believe based on hearsay alone.
another one people confuse is the "agent simulation" scene when its frozen. many people noticed in this scene that many actors are used repeatedly in different poses and places. A lot of people at the time called it lazy or a mistake. In reality, it was genius to show that mouse was lazy about creating the "regular NPCs" choosing to focus more time on the woman in the red dress, and so he simply re-used assets to fill in the simulation
The time you realize Morpheus is basically playing Pac-Man with Neo to get him out of the office when the agents rock up. And it only really stops when Neo eats his Power Pill. 😂
Caught the Bruce Lee nod, Coppertop insult, and green hue of the Matrix on first viewing. By the time I had watched this 5 times I had caught several others. But I'm pleased to report that I still found out some new things today.
I've watched the movie way more than 100 times, paused it, slowed it down, wrote a song using samples and dialogue from the film, watched bonus materials, read books about it, and I still missed many of these points. Great video.
Wow, props to you, a "Things you missed" list with actual things I actually missed! Normally, these lists are full of crap like "In Endgame, when Falcon says 'on your left' it's a callback to Winter Soldier when they're running around the.." LITERALLY EVERYBODY GOT THAT!! This was well-researched, informative and as I already said, actually provided new info. Well done!
One correction: i work with people that did cg on this film, and digital color grading wasn’t a thing in 1999. The green and blue tint was accomplished by using green and blue lights during the physical printing of the film. “Analog color grading”. Low tech, but beautiful results.
In "Simulacra and Simulation" , the chapter title where Neo has hollowed out the book is "On Nihilism" - which pretty much describes Neo's life up to that point: nothing has any consequence and his life is hollow like the reality of human existence.
@@HueyLewisRocks Like food and water we can all survive for some time without it but ultimately lacking substance all life cannot survive on its own. Everything is contingent.
Amazing they went to the level of detail to the blue/red pen. I'm a diehard Matrix fan, have probably watched the first film about 30 times and have never noticed that, nor would I if not for this video. Pretty damn cool! There are a million little goodies like that across all of the films. Like when Neo has the girl with the white rabbit and her boyfriend show up to take him to the club... Neo asks the guy, have you ever woke up but felt like you were still in a dream? And the guy says yeah, mescaline, it's the only way to fly. At the end of the film, Neo is able to fly. So many goodies and such a wonderful franchise. I absolutely can't wait for Resurrections!!!
The original concept was that the human brains were actually the processing substrate for the matrix, but this was deemed too complex, so instead they ran with the idea that humans were batteries, which makes much less sense!
I loved the movie (the sequels, not so much). But the whole battery thing really never made sense to me and required a much higher suspension of disbelief from me than usual. This is the first time I've heard of them initially being part of the computational matrix, but that makes SO much more sense!
@@TJDimacali computer Neural Networks was still a new/fun concept in computer science in 1999 so a lot of discussions went on in CS classes about using humans as a neural networks in classrooms because of this movie
I remember Morpheus explaining that, "Combined with a form of fusion, the machines had found...all the power they would ever need." And I thought, "They've got fusion power and...still need human batteries for power? Why?"
Yep, how the studios dumb things down for the masses. While I somewhat resent it, I've worked in enough IT related fields to know it is likely necessary.
I'm going to refute one little tiny statement, the human body is an electrical machine, bioelectric machine if you will, and the electricity that we produce concentrates in our brain which indicates why the plug would be in our brain, and need of a harness, that you have to connect to the brain to get the most out of your battery. So on that point I don't think it makes less sense I think it makes an acceptable amount of sense. It's a movie doesn't have to be perfect just has to make sense and I think that makes an acceptable amount.
Prior to being unplugged Neo name isn't just Anderson, (son of man) but THOMAS (doubting Thomas). Once he believes, he becomes NEO. So y'all missed that one.
Anderson does not mean son of man. It means son of anders or ander in Scotland Andrew. It is andrew that it self means Andreas and then you find Man but it is more like Manly.
@Tom Cummings it comes from the greek names ἀνήρ/ἀνδρός and those names mean Man but it is not Man as in Human it is Man like in Manly or strong. Acording to etymology.
The matrix was one of the most beautiful pieces of artwork to ever exist on earth, so far. It's not inconceivable that it holds more truth than I first thought was a child. The creators are genius artists that may understand this world better than most.
@@JamesBlakeBoland Absolutely. It may not be reality exactly but it is certainly truth. What a time to be about to see the next part of the story. The timing could not be more poetic. I'm sure we'll learn something as we all go through an awakening similar to what the inhabitants of the 6th version of the matrix might have felt after Neo's sacrifice. Can't wait!
When Neo is running from the agents near the end of the movie, he breaks through the door on his left. "No, your other left." He runs past an old lady watching the series The Prisoner on the television.
I can't remember that scene. Is it like you are on a videogame looking at the screen and there is the left of your characther that is facing you which is the right side of your screen?
Watching it the other day, I noticed that when neo is introduced to the nebuchadnezzer crew Cypher is the only one wearing red possibly foreshadowing his ill intent to betray them….
I love The Matrix. Thanks for the video, some stuff I knew but others I didn't and it just reaffirmed my love for this movie. Now I need to go re-watch it with all of this new information and enjoy it even more. Also, reading the comments I found some deeper insights into the film too. The Matrix rules. One of the greatest movies ever made.
All other considerations aside... Hugo Weaving's performance in these films was literally phenomenal. I'm not sure I can think of a single truly fair comparison in the world of Cinema.
When this was being filmed I used to go the same coffee shop across the road from his Hugos kids school. Its wild living in Sydney for this as you constantly see your life in the Matrix. I literally ate at the same 'Noodle Place' that Anderson ate at, as it was across the road from where he got arrested.
It's also connected to zen Buddhism. Just have a cookie means focus on the present moment without thinking what's next. In Buddhism usually it's all about having a tea.
One of my all-time favorite movies. I don't do fansites so I really appreciate this visual catalog of all the "secret" stuff. WhatCulture does it again.
I wrote my Film Study Alevel on this film and this video blew my mind! It’s cool to see that I tapped into some of the themes you’ve mentioned here! 🙌 Excellent Work man keep it up! 🙌
Nice one, WhatCulture! This was intriguing and entertaining far above it being informing/informative and for that we thank you! Kudos to the narrator for pulling off such a seamless effort, too! Well-rounded conjured perfection nevertheless! Quite enjoyable! Whoohoo!
What does blue and yellow make? Ok, so I notice this while watching this video; the real world is blue, and the virtual training world is colored yellow, if you combine this 2 colors you’ll get a lovely matrix green, a world as real as the blue one, and as virtual as the yellow one.
This makes me think they were sitting around brainstorming this and came the blue and green part then decided we'll make it yellow and it'll be another level in the story xD
The cookie. As we find out the second movie, food can be a way to transmit code from programs in the matrix to humans. While it was never outright said, the cookie was code the oracle needed Neo to take in order to continue on his path.
I missed quite a few of these and this was interesting. I'm proud that I did pick up on 'coppertop' as being a reference to the human race as batteries. I was such a fan at the time that my daughter is called 'Trinity'
Born in '95 and same ! The second one is sooooo good ! The third one is my least favorite just because of the too long battle scene and the train station being a bit off I think. But the end is so good. The fact is that people disliked it in great part due to the path of the one ending in a way very much unexpected and far from what we usually see.
I think people didn't like the ending because they misinterpreted the Oracle and the Architect's final conversation. The only time the Oracle told the truth to anyone was when she said to Neo "I'm sorry, but you're not the one."
The reference to "coppertop" - I didn't realize people would not get that. But back in 1999 Duracell's advertising referring to it a "Coppertop" was much more prevalent and the reference was easily caught when watching the movie.
Joe Pantoliano stayed at the hotel I worked during the film shoot. He's an awesome guy. Me and my workmates shared a cigar with him after close one night.
Tim Germer well, I missed it when I saw it the first time - and the second... And I am not the only one. Many of my friends also didn’t notice, but we noticed other things very easily like the reference to Alice in Wonderland.
@@chelfyn .....Yep just like Jesus is the son of man and our saviour. Neo=A new or revived form of, Anderson=Son of Andrew/Anders, Andrew/Anders=Man, manly, warrior, strong and brave. Neo fights for mankind and is our saviour.

I've always thought it very likely that Cypher was given the same prediction from the Oracle that Neo was given but instead of accepting that he wasn't the one and moving on he believed he was tricked and owed something and grew resentful.
Another Bruce Lee reference: In the combat training tutorial in The Matrix: Path Of Neo, the location is from Han's underground facility in Enter The Dragon
Actually, those pens have 4 colours on them, just cant see the black and green side from that angle. Maybe that's also a reference, like the monitors being black and green and in reverse.
@@evoFTMFW Of course its the same structure, they build them the exact same way. Like how red pens and black pens of the same model are the exact same but have different colors. The housing is identical.
Andrew Johns no, they’re not. The two color pens are red and black, not blue, and have the triggers for each on opposite sides, 180 degrees apart. The 4 color pens have 2 sets of opposing triggers, 90 degrees apart. This is 100% a 4 color pen.
When Neo uses the pen and uses blue, he then has Morpheus say to him you may not be ready yet almost directly after. I wonder if those two are related. If he had chosen red would Morpheus had known Neo was ready?
The cookie is the programming that allows Trinity's love for Neo to bring him back to life. The Oracle does this for Sati and Seraph at the end of Revolutions
To the apparently deleted comment: Morpheus is specifically the dream god that sends Human Shaped images to dreams whilst his brother sends animal and inanimate images, thus Morpheus allowed people to dream of humanity.
@@samsung-eh4dv I'm not sure what you mean. Morpheus is one of Somnus's (Greek God of Sleep) 1000 sons, along with Iceos, Phobetor, and Phantasos, the Somnia (Dream Shapers) of Human Form, Pleasant Dreams, Nightmares, and Animals/Inanimate Objects respectively. Morbius is the name of a DC Vampire, A Dr. Who villain, and a character from Forbidden Planet...
I think the scene where Morpheus gives Neo directions over the phone to avoid the agents is a reference to future-Ted doing the same thing for Ted in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
Well, granted that Keanu was perfectly dark and emo for the role, Will Smith pulled off “I Am Legend,” so he could have pulled off “The Matrix” too. But ONLY if Keanu had turned it down, obviously. 😁

Because the matrix is artificial, I see the city as an amalgamation of serval cities from humanity's past as all of those cities are now in ruins and the machines only had the leftover data and video to recreate civilization within the matrix after their Eden version failed. It's entirely possible that the city in the majority of the Matrix scenes in the films is the entire matrix itself and no other cities really exist therein. It's like how they keep Jim Carrey's Truman in The Truman Show from leaving the town he lived in his entire life. If you've got no pressing reason to go anywhere else what does it matter if nothing else exists beyond your horizons. This is further indicated by the fact that when the group goes to see the Merovingian they have to go to another area of the matrix, like a new layer meant for programs and those humans they invite as entertainment.
Your description also really reminds me of the movie The Thirteenth Floor. It also features the recreation of an earlier era in human history within a virtual reality, which just stops rendering after a limit and turns into a black emptiness with green lines slowly fading away. I guess if you keep the occupants of the Matrix in a loop like Westworld's hosts, you don't have to worry about the physical extent of the Matrix.
Deunan Knute ... yes, and related to this is how the Draco agenda has already succeeded with keeping human souls looping, so that they forget their past lifetimes
Regarding Neo representing Jesus the Christ, do you remember what was said to Neo before he was resurrected? "You can't be dead, because I love you." Do you remember who said it? Trinity.
The Trinity of Father (Morpheus), Son (Neo), and Holy Ghost (Trinity). Morpheus also plays a John the Baptist role, proclaiming Neo as the One (Messiah). Cypher--Lucifer (juxtaposed with flames after betraying Morpheus and the tempter of the Messiah as in his conversation with Neo he tries to undercut Neo's faith--"I know what you're thinking, 'Why, oh why, didn't I take the blue pill.'" And of course, Cypher is Judas as well.

Getting an advert for Duracell Coppertop batteries immediately after the video ends in which I have commented on them for a video related to the Matrix is a perfect example of apophenia. And damn good ad placement!
Aside from the Anderson/Neo/One implications, Morpheus, Trinity, Zion, the Nebuchadnezzar, and all sorts of names are derived from religious texts spanning multiple religions and theologies. Most of the dialogue from and with Cypher is derivative of Judas. There's direct references to the Bible, including on the data plate for their ship. There is so much theology packed into the movie that it's hard to miss it. I had to rewatch and do a 50-page paper on The Matrix as it relates to defining the self (yourself, as well as humanity, in the context of other books we'd read) as the final for my first college-level English course. Pretty big leap from high school. But one of the most eye-opening times of my life.
What annoyed me for the first home video releases was that they put a very heavy green tint on the film that wasn't with the cinema releases - I always hated that. Thankfully they removed it for the remastered/4K release and I'd say there is no green or blue tint at all, BUT the respective colours are rampant throughout the sets - the matrix scenes all have walls, objects and clothes, etc with dull green/grey colour schemes and thew same with the real world scenes with Blue/grey. I much prefer it without the heavy tint
@Christopher Norris I don't think is a call for Neo, that has already escaped and it is now recruiting. I think is a cry for help for us to be recruited and realize that we(the audience) need to wake up.
One fact they left out was that humans were not supposed to be batteries in the original script. Humans were to be used to run super computing tasks by linking their brains together. The studio insisted they change it to the battery story claiming people wouldn't understand what is essentially cloud super computing. Though even a layman who halfway listened in one Biology class in their lifetime would note that though humans do produce electricity to transfer information via our nervous system, it is not what you call cost beneficial, as you must consume far more energy in the form of food than a body would ever produce, resulting in an actual energy net loss.
I swear this happened: I was walking with my husband through Farmer’s Market (a popular spot in our hometown of Los Angeles). I was just commenting that I felt like (and this was before even the pandemic!) was like living in a dystopian world. Just then, Lawrence Fishburne walked by. (This is a celebrity-heavy spot. We see celebs here often). We sort of backtracked around to approach him and said how much we love his work. We asked for a photo with him and he said, “Nah, I’m not gonna take a photo” but pulled us both in for a big bear hug! An amazing experience but wow, right after I was saying I felt like I lived in a dystopian world??

When I saw this movie over 20 years ago it was a shock and I couldn't understand why. Then I watched it with someone who was deeply versed in the esoteric and as he explained the alchemical nuggets laced into the story, I had yet another mind-blowing experience.
I’ve just rewatched the matrix, purely for the reference to the pen. Yes it is a 4colour pen, and he wrote in blue. However, it was handed to him with blue already down, therefore was not his choice he just took the pen and signed. Secondly, it’s more professional to sign in blue or black, and after just being spoken to about that, and working within an office, he’d be used to signing in blue or black, never red or green
The justifications here are all valid points. I offer that that all may actually reinforce the point, however; the system rejects or even disallows red (awakening and awareness) and promotes defaulting to blue as imposed upon us by the system making choices for us as much as it can.
Sorry, but it's not blue or black, its blue. Meaning - if something is signed in black, it's hard to tell if it's a copy or not. Originals should be signed in blue. Red is usually for a correction.
