The best songs grow better every year. I have been a big fan of Waits since the 90s. 25 years later, I think this one of his masterpieces. Literally starts out with questions about the core of our existence.
My heart hasnt been devoted to so many women as maybe it should, but at this moment it was licked by this song. I will forever feel in debt to Tom Waits for giving us all such great fucking music, he's a true artist
I like walking up hills. When I reach the top , I like to sit down , mooch about abit , and listen to music. Sometimes it's Elgar , sometimes it's Vivaldi. Occasionally Bach. Mr Waits gets me every time! Try a night accent of Snowdon , solo , look up at the stars , and play this song!
Its so nice to know that im not the only one who feels that fuckin respect to Mr. Waits... I Wish I could see him live someday... but here in Mexico i think im going to be the only one in that concert lol...
616Hell, thanks for uploading this fantastic version! Tom is singing us the truth. Whatever invisible friend we have faith in, we will live and love and expire.
@BobcatSchneidermann Thats true. He made Songs that can make you feel invincible, but other songs can make you feel like youre a vermin or something. Tom Waits is a genius when it comes to control an audience.
@CynikalDog - Yeah, I think it's unfortunate that artists tend to release studio albums soon after they've created their songs, then the songs only mature musically after they've performed them a few thousand times. I agree, this is a good example.
This live show is consistently my favorite thing from Tom. The band he has, the arrangements, the song selection. The only disappointment is that the solos aren't longer because nearly all of them are phenomenal.
@yodelolz vaya es muy bueno saber que hay alguien mas alla afuera me da mucho gusto aun que hagas despliegue de pataneria, pero no hay pex carnal larga vida al señor waits, buena vibra dude
@TheAmazingAtheist I wonder what he's "completely wrong" about. His personal preference for the other version? Hmm... that makes me wonder if my preference for corn on the cob over canned corn is completely wrong too. I mean, I get this pleasant sensation when I eat the former and an unpleasant sensation when I eat the latter, but I could be misinterpreting the whole thing. What do you think?
@CynikalDog Nah they're good in different ways. The album version grows on you. In fact the fact that the vocals in the studio version are somewhat uncomfortable to listen to make it all the more fitting, as it deals with a subject that is quite uncomfortable to address.
Yeah, it's a dream audience. I'm reminded of the Pixies show I went to last year and how pissed I was with the obnoxious hipsters in front of me who first booed and jeered the opening band, then would not shut up during the performance. Just let the band PLAY.
heh... i guess different people interpret same things in different ways... but the entire song generally portrays the inevitability of death, a dark and gruesome end for everyone...
Sorry, cats, but I just want to point out that 1. This recording is out of context of the concert and 2. Is out of context of the the album. I wasn't at the show - ask someone who was and they will tell you that it was well placed (and obviously well performed, yes indeed!) within the entire composition of the show. But I do know the album and this song can not, in my heart at least, be separated from these 3. precious songs: The Earth Died Screaming, Jesus Gonna Be Here & Black WIngs.
