We are getting so much rain daily and had a hailstorm that decimated everything unprotected several weeks ago. So glad I resisted transplanting when the weather got nice. My gut instinct kept reminding me we always get a late hailstorm, and that we did. I have to cover/uncover whatever I did get planted every day. Still trying to finish my hoop tunnel to get my tomatoes in the ground. I want to make sure they are protected from too much rain and the rain is cool enough there could be more hail.

Hail is always a nightmare. We are lucky that when we do have hail it is always pretty small, it's not often it does major damage. But our most likely time for hail is actually late July and August when there is not much I can do to protect the whole garden.

I keep light tarps for hail. Just the thought of hail on my warm weather plants is quite terrifying, lol

You can start beets and carrots in middle Tennessee? We went from high 70’s to low 90’s in the last three days in my area.

Beets should be fine, carrots will be a bit harder to get germinated in that heat.

Your yard looks very well manicured. We are hoping to plant sweet potatoes this weekend in Zone 6. Just a little late. Everything else is in the ground. My daughter brought me more tomatoes. About 10 more.

Around here it doesn't make sense to plant anything before about June tenth and even then there could be sub-freezing nights some years. I'm at 6840' in the southern portion of the Sierra Nevada range. I think we count as zone 3, although it can get pretty darn hot in the summer.

I have family that lives in a similar zone in Idaho. They do most of their planting ng green houses, otherwise they wouldn't even be able to grow most warm season crops.

If yo are in the middle of Scotland then you might be able to keep sowing, but here am too busy harvesting too even consider sowing more. When Sept arrives then I will be planting second crop for harvesting in new year, but not now or it will surely die in the coming summer heat.

@@StoneyAcresGardening I came across your channel through suggested videos. Im farming 1.5 acres., half acre bigger then last year and were late because we're installing drip irrigation this year with weed barrier. Weed barries is a BEAR to work with but hopefully come july to harvest we aren't weeding. Its 95 deg out today and we're watering the 2 small green houses twice a day. Watering, and weeding expecially is a chore that needs to be automated when you have minimal help.

If nothing else, plant some starts in containers. One year I went without anything growing. Never again. The next year I did tomatoes, eggplant , pepper and zucchini in pots on the rear deck. I had lots of veggies for my favorite meals.

@@lindmarcella Thanks for taking the time to encourage me. Still haven’t planted anything. Maybe I’ll try your suggestion!
@lindmarcella
@lindmarcella Год назад
@@shadyman6346 May I suggest you pick 2 or 3 things you like to eat then set up two or three containers, pot, basket, grow bag or even a vinyl shopping bag, just make sure it has 2 or 3 drain holes in the bottom. Or it you have a sunny space that receives at least 6 hours of sunshine. If using containers, fill to 2-3 inches from the top. Make a hole, add a handful of worm castings and plop it in. Gently tap it down leaving a little well around it so water will pool around it and sink in. One plant of tomato, pepper, squash or eggplant will fill it up. Get a few small poles to put in next to the plant for support when it really starts to grow. If you’ve got a spot in the ground, weed it (use a shovel or fork to just loosen it and lift out the weeds), then amend with aged manure, compost or worm castings. Do the same thing when planting. Leafy vegetables can be set in almost any place, even a flower bed. Swiss chard, lettuce or even bok choi look lovely nestled almost anywhere. I’d like to hear how you had the best tomato sandwich that you ever had in your life and is was the result of one little seed. It blows my mind to think that one little seed can grow into a 4’ plant and produce, with a little care, up to 50# tomatoes. (Inflation, take a hike!!) There is so much knowledge here on utube. Make use of it and let us know your results. ps- it may be a little late in the season but search for “plant in June in Zone X.” Happy Gardening!🌱🌱🌱

I found what I think is tiny termites in my strawberry bed! I was transplanting 2 more strawberry plants and unearthed them! I haven't found them anywhere else in the part of the garden we are using this year. What can I do? It's just a 5x5 area.

You need to have a professional come check it out. You don't want to mess around with termites.
@gregabbot4631
@gregabbot4631 Год назад
Termites? Is there a source for their food? Spider mites? Aphids, sometimes can look crazy. If there are new seedlings aphids love them and are protected by the ants. TMI.
@DebRoo11
@DebRoo11 Год назад
You could try boiling water if you've found their nest or where the most of them are. Dig up your plants around the nest and rinse the roots completely with water. While they are out of the way, pour boiling water from a pot or kettle especially if you see tunneling or a mound. Once you don't see anymore living buggers, and the soil cools.down, replant. Ive done this many times with ant gills and works like a charm. Takes out the whole nest without poluting the soil.
