This is based loosely, on actual events. No plane crash or tampering with the flight controls, but it has been proven a person can (or could - don't know if it's been fixed since then) access the airplanes avionics systems via those ports under the seats. All that was actually done was to monitor the plane's performance and record various sensor outputs.
