2000 Buried Alive In  

Hope giving way to tears and a sense of helplessness. It’s been over 72 hours since Nature’s fury struck the mountainous northern Enga province of the Pacific island nation of Papua New Guinea.
Most people were sleeping when a massive landslide struck… And loads of rocks and mud flattened homes, and left behind massive swathes of debris.
Over 2000 people are feared dead, the government has said. Treacherous terrain and the difficulty of getting aid to the site raises the risk that few survivors will be found. The site is remote.
The landslide crashed through Yambali village at 3 am on Friday. More than 150 houses were buried beneath debris almost two stories high. Rescuers told local media they heard screams from beneath the earth.
Others in the area are equally helpless and desperate. Residents are doing all they can to try and shift the debris and reach any survivors.
Heavy equipment and aid has been slow to arrive due to the remote location while tribal warfare nearby has forced aid workers to travel in convoys escorted by soldiers and return to the provincial capital, roughly 60 km away, at night.
The first excavator reached the site late on Sunday. Contact with other parts of the country is difficult due to patchy reception and limited electricity at the site.
Many people aren't even sure where their loved ones were when the landslide hit because it's common for residents to stay at the homes of friends and relatives.
