@@dtexas2964 Racing in any open wheel series, particularly in the '90s, was a dangerous proposition. Hell, major changes in safety design didn't start occurring until the mid 2010s with the HALO in Formula 1 and the Aeroscreen in IndyCar. Same could be said for stock cars with the HANS devices and stricter seat designs before Earnhardt's death.
Absolute travesty that we never saw these chassis' race at Indy. Would have been a spectacle to behold, and possibly a "neeeeewww traaaaaacckk reeecccoooorrrd"
I was at the track that day... it was my first open wheel race I attended in person. I come back here to relive it now and then and to show people how awesome and insane the racing was in those years in CART.
@@RandysRacingPlace633 Meh, I disagree. Fuck the IRL. I just re-watched the Chicagoland 2002 finish and it was relatively boring. A close finish doesn't equate to an interesting one. The amount of lead changes between Andretti and Montoya is what makes this one of the best. Chicagoland 2002 was a close finish, but the cars were dead even for 5 laps without a change in position.
I attended the 2001 CART race at Michigan. It was unbelievable... 60 lead changes! This track, designed by the same engineer who designed Daytona (Charles Moneypenny) is MADE for speed and side-by-side competition.
@TheZadak the current indycars are normally aspirated and make around 630 hp with a maximum rpm of 10,500 rpm. the amazing turbocharged champ cars in this video were running at 16,000 rpm and making around 900 hp depending on the amount of boost they were allowed at each track. in 2003 (i think, it may have been 2004) champ car switched over to cosworth engines that were limited to 12,000 rpm, and made around 750 hp depending on the allowed amount of boost.
I'd love to see open wheel racing coming back to MIS. I went to to IRL races there, and each one was far better than any stock car race. Now, they race downtown, still a good race, but nothing like draft packs at MIS.
Ahh, what a great battle, and a great finish. I remember catching the tail end of this race on tv, and it was a blast to watch. Great stuff! Does anyone know what that song/theme is at the end of the video?
Jonathan Williams said that Frank was in the box, chanting "Michael Schumacher, look out! Michael Schumacher, look out!" as Juan Pablo took the checkered flag.
Awesome finish with Marques directly in the path.Do you crash into the back of him while beating the other guy? Montoya said he would have had he needed to.It was impossible to tell who had won from further down the track where we were sitting.
I was there for that unbelievably thrilling finish. That sound was like music. Sad for Max Papis as he had a great Team Rahal car, led a ton of laps and the Ford motor let go...
I went yr little al and bobby rahal battled and is or was the fastest race speed in history. I loved the wide sidewalk along the fence and the cars going by you right below!! - at least at that time it was that way. That was one all out speed and racing 2 mile track - loved it!
@TheZadak Quicker on a road course, but the Champ Cars of that era were beasts in horsepower and aero. This is the era where the closed course speed record was broken. F1 cars are not "so much faster than these cars"
Bollocks. Montoya just got bored of being out of the spotlight, and went where he felt wanted. He was a great F1 driver, just unfortunate to be on the tail end of the Schumi years.
HAHA NA$CAR. Original. You're correct, though. Indy is it's own deal, and for some reason, drivers seem to think NASCAR is the place to be, when that isn't the case at all.
this was a great finish but i dont think people realize how close it came to maybe one of the biggest wrecks ever. a crash that probably would have ended in the grandstands
This should have been the finish to the Indy 500 in 2000 with CART equipment if it was allowed and TG realized in 1996 splitting was the worst option as a whole for the sport than just over what the Indy 500 homers from USAC thought.
its curious u said that...Indy 500 on 2000 was win also by a Fast & Furious Juan Montoya in a very dominant way!! (even IRL and CART were apart they made their first crossover in that Legendary Race that maybe was the start point to the reunion of that incredible race categories years later )...
I see this before from IceBudweiser but in EUROSPORT channel and ESPN International. I used to like the old red scoring building sitting aside the start/finish line. Now the newly rennovated blue (I say ridiculous) building ruined the beauty of MIS. JPM nice racing with Andretti...
Dude, you know that always NASCAR forgets about Indy guys. If Wheldon, Allmendiger or Hornish trespass to NASCAR, they will ask "who the hell are these guys?"
Indeed, racing on streets and road-courses only will damage the sport. I had a bad feeling that CCWS will fail the tradition of CART if they keep adding in road-racing like this, when IRL started to diversify their series.
I KNEW that but the reason why he is doing NHRA because ESPN has screwed itself time after time and announcers have been switched just to make whats his name (ESPN CEO) happy!
yeah. IRL is not as good as Champ Car was. absolutely not!... what a shame, I really miss Champ Car or CART. very sad :( ... indeed great victory, well done montoya!
I hate tony george. because of his actions champ car/cart eventually fell under and I now have nothing to look forward to on sundays. irl???? BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! give me a break, what a joke. in the end he won of course and that's a sad deal because cart really was a great thing. i miss the roar of the engines, the sleekness of the cars, the exciting finishes, the amazing tracks.... etc. now i have to relive the glory days through old footage.
+Keith Valdez I enjoyed both personally, and arguably though the IRL era of 2001-2003 created some of the best open wheel racing I've ever seen. Shame we can't just enjoy both..
And the packed stands. races in 7 different countries. Budgets that are 10 times what they are now. It was just a great time for motor sorts. I'm American but lived in Sweden from 91 to 98 and Eurosport would have F1 then directly to the start of the Indy Cart. The mid 90's when Mansell was over here, it was peaking. even Senna was talking about driving the Indy 500. Technology made the cars quicker every year.
Tony George screwed up the 1996 Indy 500. CART was dumb to run the US 500 that year and cost them big time in the years after it. They never should have did that. It was about USAC and IMS trying to control open wheel racing especially Tony George along with Berine with it a little bit.
