Mr Fred when it comes to Ghanaian businesses, not opening-up I sometimes equally wonder why our society is what it is. I watched this video where this woman had 35,000 birds yet when she was asked whether poultry farming is profitable, what she said was " Nyame adom kakra kakkra". I mean what is Nyame adom kakkra kakkra? Yet in this video, she showed the viewers a 5 story building she's constructing for a hotel. I have always gone to Uganda and Kenya to watch this kind of detailed analysis of business " success rate" because they are open and frank about their business as you are doing. We love ❤️ you and please keep giving us more.

Hi Fred, that is an African problem. We are scared of competition and Africans have a mentality that he only wants to succeed in the community. That is why the people voted into power only think of themselves and family members. Thanks a lot for your excellent informative presentation of farming in Ghana.

Hi Fred, thanks for you're #transparency and to share my opinion on why many livestock farmers don't wanna open up on about their profit margin is simply because they are afraid of competition and also want to be the only ones who succeed. This is a part of the many challenges we face in our part of the world people hoard information to themselves and tend to deflects people curiosity with holy ghost 👻 mantra like "is by the grace of God". I'm very grateful that we have people like u who communicate to Africans and the larger word with undiluted truth and transparency. Looking forward to starting my own farm. Thanks.

Thanks bro. I had 500 backyard poultry sometime ago. I had to stop because then I couldn't get enough time off my main job. You are from a different generation. I too am going into poultry farming in Ghana and believe in sharing information. Perhaps we should start an association to share knowledge with each other, and others. You should look into duckweed as a source of protein feed for your chicks, it's easy to grow. Black Soldier flies are also a good supply of protein.

Thanks Fred for daring to be different and sharing important information, vital to success in farming business. There're so many reasons why Africa is still behind other continents in development. Hoarding information and refusing to mentor the younger generation are some of them. But with forward thinking and selfless young Africans like yourself, who are committed to the growth and development of the continent, there's real hope for a much greater future for all Africans. God bless you abundantly. Keep up the good work.

I think openness is a function of character, exposure, and level of education. Most people in the industry see others as competitor not as partner in progress. But I think if government can take the problem of secured marketing of farmers, they may become more acommodating of others.

Thanks for sharing. I am learning a lot. I really don’t have a clue as to why poultry farmers are not sharing their experiences to support young investors. maybe they are not aware we consume more than we can make and Ghana is forced to import. maybe they want to guard against intellectual property. would they rather offer training for a fee? I am just guessing here. I do watch your videos and I am glad you have decided to share your experience.

Competition. Farmers are always worry about success and failure. Not only their own but, also that of the near by farmers as well. It can be a big problem to have many problems and then the time you are really successful everyone else is being successful as well. That can create temporary issues of over production causing prices to fall and the actual profit from farming is lowest when you have your best production.

awesome video....watch it few times :) what is your feed conversion rate (FCR) for the birds? That is for every gram of feed the bird eat, how many gram it gains in weight? Do you mix your own feed with those ingredients base on the age of the bird? what is your cost per bird, selling price per bird, gross profit margin per bird, and net profit per bird? Though, you're farming for eggs? at what week do you expect the bird to start laying eggs, how many eggs per bird for the life of the bird? your feed and medication were: 1st month = $1238 for 2000 birds = $0.62 per bird 2nd month = $1416 for 2000 birds = $0.71 per bird 3rd month = $1828 for 2000 birds = $0.92 per bird 3 months (12 weeks) = $4493 for 2000 birds = $2.25 per bird looks like will cost you about $1.00 USD per bird per month for feed and medication, what is your operating expense per bird per month? operating expenses would include labor/staff, transportation, power/electricity, water, and so on. thank you very much for sharing :)

It's because many do not do any bookkeeping or accounting so they can't give you specifics. Many small business owners in Ghana do not keep record of their cost and expenses that's why they can't typically tell you Prices are changing all the time. Petrol price can change tomorrow and every price will change. The losses and gains change all the time. Plus there is the fear that you will know more, do it better, and be more successful than them. Also when your animals die, it can be a painful experience and some people will want to avoid any topic that will lead to the bad memories.

Europe exports chicken to Ghana for cheap because European farmers get plenty of grants and subsidies from the government so their products end up being cheaper. So when they are selling chicken to Ghana for cheap, that's because their production cost is covered by the grants they get. Ghana farmers, however, do not get same benefits from their government so all their expenses are added to the sale price of the chicken. For this reason, when you go to buy chicken, the imported one is cheaper! One more thing: based on the environment, Ghana may be spending more money on medicine for the imported day old chicks because they are not native to Ghana. Therefore they catch more diseases than if the chicks are in their native countries in Europe. Somebody from Kenya who imports the same day old chicks from Europe will have to deal with different diseases that are common in Kenya, etc
