2000 marked the year that the first Sacagawea Dollars were released, and in an effort to promote the new coin, General Mills placed a coin inside every 2,000th box of Cheerios. It was soon discovered that some of the 5,500 coins were struck with a different set of master dyes than those in general circulation.
Shown on the Obverse of the coin is sculptor Glenna Goodacre's rendition of Sacagawea, of whom no contemporary portraits exist, and whose likeness is based off a Shoshone model; the same tribe as the famed guide. On the Reverse is the more traditional imagery shown on the back of the American coinage; picturing a soaring eagle surrounded by stars. One way to tell the valuable “Cheerios Dollars” from the general circulation coins is the enhanced tail feathers. Collectors value these coins as pattern coins; coins that are created as examples and not meant for circulation.
Only a few of the coins have come to light, and collectors speculate that many remain undiscovered in households across America. The coins that have been discovered - command high price tags. Contact GMRgold today, and see how our knowledgeable personal advisors can help you expand your portfolio.
